Hi Martin, very satisfying video! The look of even a moderately dirty car can be transformed with a wheel clean. I like to clean my wheels the day before I clean the car - just to spread the effort as am getting old! I envy your wheels as they have big even-sized gaps that you can clean with just one brush. I stopped using the GT mitt as it kept coming off my hand - I use a pair of noodle mitts from Halfords which are more comfortable and more thorough. Have you tried BH Autowheel? Non acidic spray which turns purple. Leave it to dwell and jet wash it off - leaves the wheel almost clean. Reduces the time and effort required on the contact wash. Agree that the GT serum is a great tyre dressing - great durability.
@ObsessiveCarDetailer8 күн бұрын
Hello Paul, yep I like the look of those wheel mitts, I've been thinking of getting some. I have BH Autowheel on the shelf but I dont need it on my wheels. I didn't really need a pre wash as the dirt would have easily come off my coated wheels with wheel shampoo but thought by going through this process it would be of some use to others. Im hoping this storm will wash the car a little

Nice job Martin. Good to see you posting. Loving the “silly old bastard washing wheels…” 😂😂. I see what you mean about wanting to protect the alloys. I use Surfex HD at 10% over the alloys, let it soak for 10 minutes in the winter, do the tyres as well (scrub them off) and blast off. Takes off maybe 80% of the crude off or something before I physically touch the alloys with brushes with another round of Surfex HD to minimise how much dirt I’m rubbing over the alloys. Like the paintwork process most of us follow I suppose.
@ObsessiveCarDetailer8 күн бұрын
Thank you. like I said in the video, not a planned one just thought I would post what I was up to. didn't need the pre wash really as a shampoo would have beed good enough as the wheels are coated but thought it may give people a few ideas
@kwl1898 күн бұрын
@ You’re braver than I am in how cold things have changed around so quickly weather wise. I’ve gone into winter mode now and use Surfex HD and Touch Less from Bilt Hamber to coat the alloys and car, let soak for 10 minutes. Blast them off thoroughly as I can be and back in the house within 20 minutes 🥶. Yeah I agree about the wheels. A coating makes all the difference when it comes to stopping dirt sticking to alloys and removing said dirt, mainly ball ache free even if you do take it to the next level. The wheel mitt is a game changer I found. No more overlooked spots of dirt.
@tenbob19734 күн бұрын
Surprising how many don't do that and bang the brushes on after a fallout spray - rubbing the brake dust all over their wheels 🤦🏻
@kwl1894 күн бұрын
@ I’m surprised the majority don’t even do a pre wash. Nevermind the most obvious thing to rinse down the brushes after they get dirty and clogged up before going in again. It’s like dunking a mitt in once and then using it all over the car, rubbing grit into the finish 🤦♂️ still have to use a hand mitt to make sure I don’t miss a spot which I hate.
@ObsessiveCarDetailer4 күн бұрын
@ I love good looking wheels and just treat them the same as my paintwork. I’m not saying this Process is perfect and may be altered for really dirty wheels but it has certainly given people an idea and made them think about having a process for wheels instead of just spreading dirt over them with dirty water.

I have gloss black alloys,also, I would suggest that you prewah as you are then rinse off after a few minutes. Also, I would strongly suggest cleaning the face of the alloy first as if you do the barrels first, you drag all the shit from the barrels to the face then rub all the dirt into the the gloss black face. This is against everything we do in detailing. It's like prewashing your paintwork then washing it from the bottom sills up.

Very similar to me Martin, love how methodical cleaning the alloys is however, I am curious as to why you don't rinse the surfex pre-wash off & remove the bulk of the dirt before making contact with the alloy? I personally think that is the safest method, I treat my alloys the same way I treat my paint. Don't get the hype with those foamers either, see them as an instagram shot gimmick personally, each to their own! Alloy & caliper came up a treat 👍

Having a white car with 19" black wheels they do like to gather the salts n dirt off the road. At this time of year you do need to spend more time on stuff like wheels, arches and underneath the car especially. I see cars coming into work baked with crap under arches, cars only 5 years old starting to bubble because they just leave the gunk to sit. Dirt will get behind the plastic arches and build up again sitting wet to rot
