This is a story of Hamaguchi Gohei, an influential and respected resident of a Japanese village. Hamaguchi lived during a time when Japan experienced frequent tidal waves, known as "tsunamis," caused by earthquakes or volcanic activity.
One evening, after a fine rice crop, Hamaguchi noticed strange behavior in the sea and sensed an impending danger. He quickly realized that a tsunami was coming and, without explaining his actions to anyone, set fire to his rice stacks. This unconventional act alarmed the villagers, who didn't understand the reason behind it.
Soon, the sea retreated, revealing a long, dark line on the horizon, indicating the massive incoming tsunami. When the villagers realized the danger, they panicked and tried to escape. However, the colossal wave struck the coast with incredible force, causing widespread devastation. Thanks to Hamaguchi's foresight, the villagers' lives were saved as they sought refuge on higher ground.
After the disaster, the villagers recognized Hamaguchi's selfless act and proclaimed him a god, erecting a temple in his honor and worshiping his spirit. Despite being deified, Hamaguchi continued to live humbly with his family. Even after his death, the people continued to pray to his spirit for protection and assistance in times of fear or trouble.
This story reflects the cultural significance of tsunamis in Japan and how the actions of one individual can have a profound impact on a community. It also emphasizes the importance of communal support and gratitude towards those who contribute to the well-being of society.
