(A Lonely) Knave | Ep. 10 | THE DISOWNED | Solo TTRPG OSR Zero Prep Random Table Campaign

Overthinking is the curse of the solo role-player, so what better way to break the habit than to launch right into the middle of the action - no preparation, worldbuilding or prior thought required.
We use Knave, its solo supplement A Lonely Knave and a host of other random table heavy books - mostly centered around the OSR sphere - to go back to basics and embrace the spirit of letting the dice take the lead.
This approach works well with systems like Knave, original (A)D&D or the various B/X clones (e.g. Swords & Wizardry, Old School Essentials, etc.).
All you need on top of that is some way to emulate a DM (e.g. Mythic Emulator, A Lonely Knave, Solo Adventurers Toolbox), some kind of bestiary to draw monsters and the occasional random encounter table from and you're off to the races.

The tension builds. More than just entertaining, your videos do a fantastic job of exemplifying how interpretations of oracles can really take a story to weird places.

Thank you! I'm pleasantly surprised how well this all fits together despite the disjointed library of sources I'm drawing from. My main lesson from this one so far is that the narrative is gonna be mostly fine even with a hodge-podge of oracles if you manage to maintain a grip on the overall theme of the story and filter the oracle results accordingly. It's tempting to try this with an established setting and see how far this approach carries!

Thank you! I’m playing around with ideas to visualize scenes with lots of die rolling without the aspect of it being a game and the narrative decisions being affected by randomness falling off the radar. It does feel a bit like the Futurama episode where they meet Gary Gygax and he interrupts his greeting to make a reaction roll but it’s about as good a solution as I’ve found so far.

Shaking up the shake up... I love it. This reminds me of my solo Mythic GME game that had 3 interrupt scenes in a row.

Yeah this can occasionally be a headache to track depending on how many layers of twists end up happening but it’s always fun to play. Ironsworn did my head in with positive/negative matches in the second chapter I recorded, it pretty much doubled the amount of videos I made before I was able to wrap up most of the narrative curveballs!

It’s pretty much a given that Torga comes back but there were so many options regarding the state she’s in that it felt more sensible to step out of the situation and approach it from a new angle.

Did you roll for Marius' race or is he just assumed to be human?

The NPC creator book generally assumes "human unless stated otherwise" and since it didn't mention any other origin I went with human
