Jeff in San Diego, California KN6VQP has bought a Trio TS-520S as his first rig and wanted a set up procedure using Load, Plate and Drive. This video isn't perfect by far and I can recommend make it if needed.

The Kenwood TS-520S was my first HF radio. Built like a tank. I like all the knobs and switches. Kind of like driving a manual shift transmission, you feel you are really "driving" the radio. Excellent audio. If you have a chance to get one of these fine radios, please do. N5VCP Roy

That's great.... my name is Dave K0DLP and congrats to Jeff KN6VQP. I also just got my license about a month ago and got a TS-520S(Kenwood) as my first rig. Had my first QSO today on 15meters about 900 miles away. I had tried to check in on a few nets and called CQ a few times with no reply and thought I was tuning wrong or there was a problem with the radio. Then today I called CQ and got a reply. Great videos and 73

Magical when it all comes together. I've worked the US, Canada & S America on this rig on 10 & 15m using a longwire which isn't too good on those bands, so you'll be breaking the 900 miles soon.

My first hf rig was the TS-520. Can't remember if it had a narrow cw filter but I did do lots of CW to practice for my general. I sold it after getting a TS-120. But I missed that rig. I've since bought a 520 and a 520s to resurrect. Would like an SE as well. And a TL-922 would be the icing on the cake.

Baptism of fire is a bit true I’ve been licensed since 2020 and I use a heathkit HW101 for my main hf rig and I think I’ve spoken to you using the trusty heathkit before though I’ve got a much better rig a yaesu ft767gx. Once I upgrade to my full license I’ve got a swan 350c to use but M7 me can’t use it because 525w pep input is quite a bit. I like your video and greetings from Barnsley South Yorkshire. I should say that the very weak pair on 6146As in the heathkit have no issues with the 10w limit especially on tune so for a old rig it’s great

Hello, I just got the 520S as a gift but it lacks a microphone. Could you tell me what mic you're using, I cannot seem to get one way or the other with google. Also, Do you keep the Tube heater switch on the whole time or switch it off after a certain point?
@m0jcfhamradio75 Жыл бұрын
Any 50K Ohm mic should do. The one on this rig was made by Pye in the 70s. Heaters on all the time for TX. Only turn off if you're just receiving and not intending to transmit.

Get a Kenwood MC-50 which is period correct for this radio and sounds superb

I use a Shure 522 Caroid microphone on mine better than the MC50! KJ7TBR
