"It was much too big to be called a comic. Massive, thick, heavy and far too rough." Indeed, a mighty tome worthy of the Black Swordsman.

Because I know the giant sword thing turns a lot of people off: 99% of the armor and weapons in Berserk is realistically, and often elegantly, proportioned. For my money, Berserk earns its one giant sword because 1) It's acknowledged in-universe as being ridiculously large, and 2) it's thematically and symbolically very closely tied to the main character's purpose in the story.

I had always considered the size and growth of Gut's sword to be a physical representation of the weight of the past, and the burdens he carries.

I've trained with medieval and renaissance weapons for 10 years and can confirm. They even hired one of Japan's only historical European martial arts experts as a consultant for the movie trilogy. You can see the expert's influence on Miura particularly strongly in chapter 331 where Guts ends up using a verity of historical anti-armour techniques. Even in the earliest chapters of Berserk you can tell Miura must have have worked with shelves and shelves full of reference materials. Most western media doesn't go to these lengths and in pre-internet Japan these books would have been very difficult to get hold of.

The longswords and arming swords are thicker here than in real life, but it’s a stylistic choice, so it’s fine. Kentaro Miura was really good at drawing armour. He had all kinds that would fit in that era and tons of soldiers in his pages. It really is quite impressive.

Am I the only one who thought the big sword has nothing to do with symbolism, but with the fact that Guts started as a young kid learning to fight with an adult's sword (which was way bigger for his size) and kept it proportional as he grew up because that was the only way he knew how to fight?

I wanted to mention this on the Nostalgia stream, but missed it. I think Berserk is the best example of why anime/manga seems to be partially immune to the "milking" problem that US properties have. Namely, that the Japanese seem to be the only people who are willing to let a single creator tell the story he wants to tell, for however long it takes. Miura has been the sole creative voice behind Berserk for 30 years, and he's been telling one continuous story the whole time. It's hard to imagine that happening in any Western medium other than novels. Of course the flip side of that is that there's now 30 years of Berserk to read. $32 for three volumes is good value, but it'd still be like $500 to get the whole series up to date at that price.

The 97 Anime is amazing, the more recent films and series...not so much. The 97 series was done so well why do they have to keep retelling the Golden age ark? I wish that a decent studio would pick up the IP and do a new series. If Toi can have 1000 something One Piece episodes, They can do Berserk justice. As far as these deluxe volumes go, I'm gonna start collecting them they will look great on a bookshelf!

well but one piece got 1000 episodes by dropping the animation quality so far that it is basically watching a manga with less detail, seriously there is so much filler and still images in the episodes that before I dropped it I just started skipping through the episodes

I love the pacing of manga and the development of character thoughts and actions. I believe that there's more use of psychology and the plotting is stronger than in American comics. The arcs are stronger and better planned, maybe you could talk more about what drew you into that particular arc which you mentioned. I prefer the atmosphere and mood of Junji Ito to Miura but I have to admit that the latter is doing great high fantasy work, at least on par with Alex Raymond or Hal Foster -- just far more immediate! Hatching seems more prevalent in Western art while in the East it's all about the various gradations of tones. Professional Manga artists draw on B4 paper (roughly 10x14") and sometimes well outside the margins so it is better to invest in a larger book -- 6x8" won't cut it. Murata usually sketches with an architect's 2mm drafting pencil to help fill up the page faster.
@DVSPress
@DVSPress 4 жыл бұрын
Miura actually does everything with only 3 tones - black, white, and grey. Pretty amazing the depth he makes. Reminds me of John Buscema conan comics with the hard contrast and fields of utter black.

Hey David! It's good to see someone talking about some manga comics but in a very simple yet pleasant manner. I hardly ever come across an anime/manga/light novel video that is not narrated by 360° obnoxious KZbinr; that happens way too often, at least to me. And you probably won me over starting Berserk with this video. Btw, have you ever heard of a comic book series "Thorgal"? If you enjoy Berserk, you most likely will enjoy Thorgal since it has some similarities and overall series is really great (more European comic book creators should be talked about).

maybe you could make a short video about this: I'd love to know which Mangas are covered by the Animes, and where exactly they pick up and leave, like a Timeline that shows Manga 1-40+ and beneath the Anime shows. So I can exactly see which Mangas cover the gaps in the Anime. That would surely be interesting video for many.

Sure. The short version is that manga volume 1 is the first episode of the series; The next two and a half volumes are not in the series. Then begins to golden age arc with young Guts. The series has one or two extra episodes that aren't in the manga. Mega volume 12 continues the story after the end of the anime.

I wish I could get those books, but I just can't justify the price. I already have the 40 volumes of Berserk that have been published and at 20$CAD each, that's 800$ that have been invested in that series. The deluxe edition is 60$CAD for 3 volumes... regetting everything (eventually, when they'll be published) would mean another 800$.

I love Berserk, mostly the grimdark parts of it, the high fantasy ones not so much, although still like them. And what I cannot get into is the anime version, any of them. I don't know how to explain myself properly but for me, in such a grimdark setting it loses a lot when you add animation and coloring into it, it's not nearly as dynamic as the manga version, with Miura changing his style from ultra detailed sometimes to super rough and very expressive depending on the circumstances (motion blur for example) and emotions of the main protagonist, even the regular run-of-the-mill level of quality is usually very adequate for when nothing special is happening, or perhaps better said, for when something mundane is happening. It's a bit like with the Savage Sword of Conan (black & white), with the good issues (the majority weren't imo, and still is the only comic I collected over many years) being very grimdark and detailed, both the plot and the drawings, with no color filling the gaps instead of ink shadows; or like the Lovecraft monsters, which almost always are depicted in B&W or at least with a very minimal color palette, almost monochromatic; or Giger, which I think inspired Miura a lot more than what he says (compared to the number of times he mentions Hellraiser). Also, in principle I don't like the typical giant sword in a (in the beginning) more or less fictional but realistic setting. Because I remember when I read Conan he'd sometimes would happen to get a huge sword (way smaller than one Guts use) at some point but to discard it asap in order to get a proper (well balanced and sized) sword. But in Berserk I do like that if you go that way, all people around Guts will notice the giant sword, it's not normal. Far from that, it shouldn't be possible. It is a common trope but it is well done. Berserk has what The Savage Sword of Conan didn't and I missed: continuity. Some issues of TSoC were very good, but same as the originals from R.E. Howard novels and most of Lovecraft's, also very short. Oh, and btw I also love the last Elric comic adaptation. I'd prefer for it to be black and white but still is excellent. For me it lacks a bit of grittiness but it compensates with fantastic art design, although I don't like how Stormbringer is depicted visually. For me it would have been way better a more realistic design for it, kinda like a montante (relatively small zweihänder but still pretty big) instead of a warcraft-warhammer style. That would have been a huge sword for personal use (not purely as a war or bodyguard weapon) but way more realistic while at the same time still impressive.

One of my all time favorites... Although recent issues are not going anywhere really, storywise. Lots of teasing but now we have been waiting for 30 frigging years for guts to kick Griffiths ass. I just hope it happens soon. I'll wait another 10 years until the last arc is finally completed. I think kentaro Mioura should have finished it ages ago. The tonal shift these days is pretty apparent. In my opinion some much needed zest is missing. Don't get me wrong it's still a good read which ties into a commonly asked question that is asked why the Japanese animation Studios focus vehemently on the first few acts. Well in my opinion it's because nobody really knows where the story is going or even if it's going to end. The first real arc, Griffiths transformation into femto, cascas defilement and guts torture are a decent cliffhanger. I think it's gets really wild after since it continues on as a dark gory fantasy story but gradually transforms to a more traditional high fantasy tale. As I remember correctly the violence is significantly turned down in later chapters. There are quite a few tonal shifts througout as mentioned. That might also be by design since guts demeanor changes organically in the story. The character almost ages in real time...
