It's called the ELF, a solar-powered bike-car hybrid that's turning up in cities across the country. Costing $5,500, the transportation requires no insurance or gasoline. Vicente Arenas took a test drive and talks about how the bike-car hybrid works.

Saw them a few years ago in the city. The price is high because the market for e bike cars is super high. So companies always have to overcharge them. Most of these bike like inventions shouldn't cost more than 1.5k

I've had a Mango-colored ELF, with the standard 3-gears, for four months. I LOVE it. My neighbors all admire it hugely. I am currently riding about ten to eighteen miles a day. Fabulous (and fun) exercise! I no longer take my car the 4 mile round trip to the supermarket, there's a lockable cargo hold under the back window, great for a couple of grocery bags, or for books from the County Library. I am past the age of wanting to ride a 2-wheel bike. I know enough physics to know that a tricycle is more stable (that's why milking stools always were three-legged and not four-legged). And I figure that the Center of Gravity is below my seat, even when I'm in the ELF. We have lots of hills where I live (community built around a drowned river valley) so I would never have bought a tricycle without a helpful motor to get me up all those hills. The seat is very comfortable and is sort of a hammock made of a sturdy mesh, comfortable even in high 90F weather (at which time I ride with the back window rolled up to encourage a breeze to come past me). I ride my ELF even when there is heavy rain. If you're moving forward in heavy rain, the rain blows past the opening. Being out in the rain is good, also: the rain washes the ELF and when I get home I use an old soft bath towel to dry off the windows, and everything sparkles again. I wouldn't want doors: in case there is a cross-wind that hoped to tip me over when I'm stopped at an intersection waiting to make a turn, and when I'm stopped I DO have a chance of a bit of rain slanting in at me if it's coming diagonally. I am not planning to ride the ELF when the roads are junked up with snow and salt and sand - however, where I live the roads are in decent riding condition on days between snowfalls. LOTS of lights on the ELF if you are riding after dark - you're very visible at day AND at night. Some afternoons I'm enjoying myself riding around and I don't want to come home just because it's sunset. No gasoline to buy, no annual registration fees, and it's covered under my Household Insurance not under any extra Auto Insurance. AND it is Made in the USA.

+Edith-ann Zecca A three-legged stool is not more stable than a four-legged stool, it just doesn't require the ground to be even for all legs to be on the ground. As for registration fees, that depends on where you live.

It is probably because it is impractical, expensive, and dangerous, with a very limited use. Most people who first embrace ideas like this do it from an emotional level... and then, over time, the faults become apparent, and they fade away.

I keep asking, can your feet slip off and get jammed between the ground and frame since it is open on the bottom?? Great idea if can get cars off the road. Amazing we have to drive a 4000 pound car to move 1 or 2 people weighing 100 to 400 pounds . Inefficiency defined ...🤓⛽🛢⛽🚗
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 4 жыл бұрын
No, there is no real problem. Some use bike clip shoes and I use the platform pedals with heel cups. If you foot slips off it is more likely to go up, not slam down onto the pavement. This is a very tiny hazard that has not proven to be of concern for trike riders and it is far outweighed by the collision protection advantage the body shell provides.

that's a great idea. well design could be much more smarter in numerous ways (more convenient steering wheel, windshield with more visible area etc.) and overall look and design could be much better looking.Right now its far away from sexy looking. But the concept is great, I would love to have one

Depending on the color and with a few added accessories (still with no doors), the total could come in at over 7k, and with a 1k delivery fee, there's no wonder why it hasn't really caught on.

misrepresentation, it's a solar trickle charger, not a solar powers bike. 6 to 8 hours to charge a little bitty battery. after research I find the pebl to better quality
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 7 жыл бұрын
No not a trickle charge - 80 watts in high sun is much more than a trickle. For every 10 minutes of sun you can run the motor for one minute. This works so well that I return home with an 80 to 90% charge on my battery after running local errands during which I am parking in the sun and seeing the charge current reduce my motor power draw while riding. The PEBL weighs 35 pounds more and they charge extra for the solar roof. Unlike the ELF's 3 million road miles logged, 850 sold and 5 car collisions with no injuries the PEBL is still unproven, only prototypes exist. I wish them luck as their factory is gearing up right now. Competition is good but as of today April 8 2017 there is no competition on the market for the ELF.

I am an expert owner of the ELF who used it as my only transportation for 7 years. This is the safest trike ever made in all history! It has high visibility compared to a bicycle. It has the safety of the body shell's crumple zones, it has all lighting and signals and horn like a car. I am respected in traffic by other vehicles. I use a bike lane or trail or sidewalks where available but am not limited to that. We all have the sense and courtesy to pull over if we are backing up traffic behind us. Owners have taken this ELF on cross country trips of 3000 to 54,000 miles. One is still going today. No one has ever been killed in an ELF because it is so safe and appropriate to use in traffic compared to a basic bicycle.

We have several owner groups on Facebook where you can see first hand testimony about how easy and safe it is to navigate our roads. You posted in a commenting venue that can be seen around the world. No one can prevent replies to correct false claims. Nobody should expect to not be caught and confronted when they post false information about sustainable transportation. You left your comment notifications turned on to receive replies. Bicycles are more popular than ever and cities are creating more bike lanes, wider lanes and trails. The ELF also falls under the new hot category of light electric vehicles. I used all the money I saved with my ELF car substitute to pay cash for a $20,000 electric autocycle by Arcimoto. KZbin has hundreds of videos about this new class of vehicle.

For the amount of body surface, the percentage covered with panels is surprisingly low. They could easily double the amt of power generated if they covered the entire body. Great idea though, might help a lot in congested cities.

No, only the top provides correct sun exposure for solar. There is a reason why we only see solar panels on roofs and not on walls.

It is designed as a low speed vehicle to conform with federal law. This is a very light vehicle, the windshield implodes at 50 mph. If you ever go faster than 20 mph you are either coasting down a hill or pedaling like crazy at a very exhausting level.

Belodona - My ELF has very bright headlights, turn signals,brake lights and a horn. A car costs you at least $3000/yr while the ELF costs you $300/yr to own and operate. The solar panel charges my battery during the day for use at night.

Keep in mind that $5,500 price doesn't include things like the doors which are an option but are $200 EACH or the carbon fiber panels. The frame is made of trylon, the same thing kayaks are made of=plastic. As far as pedaling to go 30mph: I couldn't pedal that fast & I'm sure I'm not alone. At least you'd get a workout.

bahrta sai ELF did say that they are gonna build more into production somewhere in the future that it would include doors to open and close. so other than that they had a great start in their first run of production.

PuertoRican88 how much will they cost though & are they going to be locking doors? The 2 problems with this are that if you want any options it can easily end up costing almost the price of a car, which is nuts & it has no theft protection. For me it would be basically a $10,000 trike.
@PuertoRican88
@PuertoRican88 9 жыл бұрын
bahrta sai they said it will have doors with locking mechanisms. yea and I know what you mean there, the downside is no doors but on the upside it has environmental benefits as an E-Bike Vehicle with no gas needed or oil at all, no license needed, no registration needed, no insurance needed, Zero Emissions, and 100% Green.

+bahrta sai Hey, were you using the electric assist at the same time? The electric motor can get you up to 20 mph without pedaling, but you would have to be on flat ground. Then when you add onto that by pedaling, 30 mph becomes possible. I personally haven't broken 30 mph, but I know two people who work with me that have gotten over 30 mph (but they used the momentum of going downhill to power into it).

There are frequently errors in reports like these. The top legal speed for all ebikes is 20 MPH in the US. I have used mine daily for 4 years, I know exactly what it is capable of. I just verified the reporter said it will do 35 with the motor, that is incorrect. I repeat - all legal ebikes in the US have to use an electronic governor to top out at 20 under power. Don't believe exaggerations about how much faster than 20 you could go by pedaling, this is a 160 pound bike. I have never gone over 26 down a hill, a long steep hill could get you moving briefly and dangerously over 30 mph, the the manufacturer absolutely does not recommend that and will tell you the vehicle is not designed for high speeds. The windshield will implode between 45 and 50 mph when towed on a trailer, or the body shell will be torn off the frame by those speeds.

I was just thinking about a solar power bike car and drew a picture of how I want the car to look. I seen on line that a company beat me to it. This small solar car is a wonderful idea, but it does not have any car doors. I would like a solar car that has doors and heat inside of car. I would like to drive this car in the winter or rain. Also when it gets dark, will the Elf keeps running? I would like to drive it at night too.
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 6 жыл бұрын
Beladonna- you don't want doors. We need the ventilation because we are exercising in that small space. You also don't need heat because you are exercising in there and the body shell prevents wind chill. The solar panel charges a large battery that will take you over 20 miles in the dark with the headlights on. In winter we use a studded rear tire.
