Ben Browder does a perfect job of playing a character who's in over his head and going crazy at the insanity he has to deal with, while also playing John Crichton as someone smart enough and capable enough to be an astronaut.

In the age of unhinged memes and out of context compilations, this show DESERVES a comeback in popular consciousness. It's also just a good show we should remember, but the deranged energy should vibe with internet culture nicely.

I love Farscape, but it honestly took me a bit to warm to it. I enjoyed it but it didn't have me until Chiana joined. Chiana and Rygel worked so well being the chaos . D'Argo and Crichton became a great Buddy Duo. Zahn was a wonderful balance point (peaceful but deadly if pushed). And you can't forget Pilot and Moya.

While overall season one is very good, for me the moment the show solidifies is the finale when we meet Scorpius. Since John's goal (getting home) obviously isn't happening anytime soon Scorpius' introduction gives him, and by extension the series, focus.

Farscape was such an interesting show. It looked like it was going to be one of those cheap syndicated sci-fi/fantasy shows like Mutant X, Cleopatra 2525, Night Man, Earth: Final Conflict, etc. But it turned out to have much better production value and writing.

One of the things that gave hope to this new 'Sci-Friday' thing they were trying out. This and Invisible Man showed how good their original programs could be, as the executives stayed out of the way and allowed the creatives to really push forward with the stuff they were doing, putting out some fantastically weird stories. Then Secret World of Jules Vern flopped, not due to any real flaw on its part, but because holy crud was it expensive, like how Waterworld was actually one of the top movies of its year, it's just it cost too much. And so the network buckled down. SG-1 became a focus as they came to it, and the other shows were shuffled aside. Didn't help that Poltergeist: Legacy ends on a sour note, and Sanctuary barely qualified as a show, and more just a series of scenes.

I love this show, I watched it when it first aired here in the UK, I'd forgot about it until it popped back up again on Horror, of all channels! We loved the Muppets in our house, so it was a no brainer that this was going to be a mustwatch for us, especially since Science Fiction was big with us, my brother was born in 1977 after all! And I see Stargate SG-1 in my feed, we covered a scene from the film of that in Music class and that's another series I saw when it first aired here! Although, I will say, one thing that annoys me above all else with this show is trying to get it on DVD, it doesn't come in Series Boxsets like it should, instead episode bundles in a box, which gets my goat! Jus release it as a set, damnit! And yeah, last I saw it, on Horror, I'd forgot about Crichton's reaction to being on an alien world as well! I also love his reaction to much of the absurdity around him! And, hey, there are worse people to be locked in a cell with than Claudia Black, can't think of too many better... jus thank the stars it's not Melissa MacCarthy or Paul Potts!

I need to get to watching this show. Been meaning to, just haven't gotten around to it yet! Back when I had a different apartment circka 10+ years ago and a TV, I had the Tv4 sci-fi channel - that's a Swedish channel for you non Swedes here - they would air FarScape, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Dresden, Earth-2 and lots more. Had it on all the time but I never really got caught up in FarScape. Would catch the odd scene hither and dither. Same with Dresden. But Earth-2 and Trek, oh yeah I followed that like a hawk. OMG The Storyteller! I love that show! There's a guy on KZbin called Owen Davies who is HD-upscaling a lot of old shows like Space Above and Beyond, Sherlock Holmes tv movies and yes, The Storyteller! I loved watching it as a kid "Greek Mythology" edition so when I rewatched it here on KZbin like six months ago, I was just sitting with my head in my hands going " _That animatronic doggo is soooo kyooot!_ "

@613harbinger316Ай бұрын
Loved this first episode. My hate is directed at the second episode where they backtrack on one of the better ideas they had in the show: translator microbes. How was John talking to the Lady and her son if they'd never been exposed to the rest of the galaxy? Even if the microbes were translating on their own for him, which isn't how they work as I understand it (microbes translating to each other), how could they understand him? I loved the microbe solution when it was introduced and then they just step on it in the second episode!

I think the thing that makes 90's sci-fi so unwatchable as an adult is that, for some reason, all the male leads act like they're 12 year old boys. That was probably deliberate, since that was the target demographic of the genre at the time, but I'm glad modern sci-fi doesn't use this method.
@kevinramsey417Ай бұрын
I prefer those 90s sci fi manchildren to the Mary Sue main characters of today's science fiction, The Expanse being the exception. They're all perfect, always right, one dimensional and completely insufferable.

@@mightybluespider Plus Crichton's constant use of comedy and pop culture references are the only ups he has over the rest of the galaxy. No one else gets his Earth jokes so it's the only thing he has over them even when they think he's insane for all the stuff he's saying.
@kommodore6691Ай бұрын
He wasn't acting immature or with bravado. He was trying to cope with the madness of his new reality. Painting all 90s sci-fi with this brush is unfair. Babylon 5 to me is the greatest sci-fi epic of all time. TNG/VOY/DS9 shaped my morality and role models. None suffer from this problem, Star Trek is about a grown up humanity. Later and modern sci-fi is often a pale imitation with much greater problems.

I don’t think that criticism applies to Crichton at all. If you watch Farscape you’ll find that he’s incredibly kind, empathetic, intelligent, charming, curious, and good at thinking on his feet. He also has flaws, like any good character does, and yes he makes snarky comments and jokes as a coping mechanism sometimes, but if we were going to have someone out there representing the human race, we couldn’t have a much better choice than John Crichton. 😊

@TheNitpickChickАй бұрын
I definitely wouldn’t describe Farscape as a show where nothing goes right for the protagonists. John and the rest of the Moya crew get plenty of victories, both individually and as a group, and they even have fun on occasion. 😊 The Premiere episode is a bit chaotic, as John is thrust into a completely alien world and has to adjust to a lot of new things quickly, but once things are more settled, John gets to show just how capable he is. John and the rest of the Moya crew are great protagonists, because they’re all flawed in unique ways and they can definitely butt heads from time to time, especially as they’re all getting to know each other, but their found family relationships and their character development is truly a beautiful thing to behold as the story progresses. 😊
