16:05 - I love the idea that stories of Janeway's twisted madness managed to reach the Alpha Quadrant so much faster than her ship did. I'm sure that in corners of the galaxy untouched by any other human influence, there are parents who tell their children that if they don't behave, The Janeway will rip their happiest memories from their heads, fuse them into the flesh of other creatures, or simply erase them and make everybody else forget they existed.

It seemed clear that Holobarclay just told Neelix that they'll need a morale officer to give him something to do and make him not feel useless. He's been programmed by the Ferengi to make people feel better about themselves so that they're more easily manipulated.

The part that really bother's me is 'herb's' aggressive reaction to the Doctor wanting to play golf, why? what does he care it doesn't affect his plans and it nearly gets him caught. Take away that bit make the crew less naive, give holo Barclay more credibility and change the bad guys to Romulans this could have been a classic.
@gallendugall89134 жыл бұрын
Bad writers come up with an idea and that's where their effort stops so the idea ends up surrounded it by contrivance. Contrived reason to introduce the idea, contrived presentation of the idea and contrived conclusion to the idea. Bad writers are bad because they're lazy. Good writers put in effort to make everything around the idea they came up with support the idea and that synergy will make the idea they came up with better. Good writers are good because they put in the effort to be good.

I've never liked Torres or Paris more than that end scene. That is brutality worthy of the Dominion. The Ferengi made the right call by folding. If there is even a chance that you've crossed Janeway you need to just give up and run away.

This episode always confused me. If they could use a star to make a wormhole thing why didn't they use it as a way to resupply Voyager or staff a ship with holgraphic crew to send them some support ships? Maybe send a Defiant or Saber class escort filled with gear to help get them home safe. You cannot send organic matter, fine, I can accept that, but maybe some gear can be sent to make their lives easier and their job a lot simpler.
@KairuHakubi2 жыл бұрын
I think if they weren't at war they would have done just that, and then after it was over, they were like "yeah but.. they're probably dead now" Also that wormhole thing was pretty new tech wasn't it? like Barclay had just developed it.
@GnomePickles2 жыл бұрын
@@KairuHakubi Fair point is fair. With supplies stretched thing it could have seemed to be too big an expense to send gear or a support ship for some hard liners. It just sort of bugged me.

This almost felt like a sadly fitting encapsulation for Voyager's treatment of various main characters; a plot building on the development of a character from another series while having Harry essentially still acting like he was circa season one. The crew acting like gullible idiots even seems to demonstrate the lack of care they had for the crew's characters at this point.

Well, when they sent The Doctor to the Alpha Quadrant, Harry and B'Elanna had to remove a number of the Doctor's subroutines to make his file small enough to transmit. It's quite possible that the holographic Reg was slightly too big.

If the crew had any sense (ie, the writers were good) the first thing the crew would have asked of Herb is "Why didn't Starfleet just send the plans, any needed data and messages? If we needed a hologram Barclay, we can make one at this end" The fact that no one was suspicious of the log jam is alarming. TLDR, A place I did support for would suffer a massive network slow down every Friday afternoon. It didn't crash the network but it was concerning enough for me to track down what was causing it. While I do like Dwight Schutlz and his performances, this was just another wasted opportunity for a decent story.
@sarahberkner7 ай бұрын
But they actually did try to send a holographic Barclay, that wasn't the odd thing. The Voyager crew have also gotten used to treating a hologram as a person because of the Doctor so it would seem rude to say they don't want him there, and they're glad to have any word from Star Trek although of course they weren't very careful. They've never downloaded a hologram from that new technology before, they wouldn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

Why aren't holograms sapient? The holodeck is basically a transporter that makes temporary matter held together by forcefields. So holographic people have what should be a fully functional organic brain.
@MrHatoi2 жыл бұрын
There's a DS9 episode where they essentially say that the "neural patterns" have to be handled by a separate transporter system because they're more complex than the rest of the body, so it seems like less "complex" matter like an arm or a leg is easier for transporters/holograms to handle, so they probably don't actually put a real organic brain in holograms.
