In this special video, you can see vintage buses, trains and trams operating on the roads and rails of the East Anglia Transport Museum!
Part 1 at 0:11 shows you the trolley bus in operation on the museum's roadways.
This is a preserved London Transport Trolleybus which is an electrically powered bus that runs on overhead live wires that supply electricity to the vehicle with two wires where the power is collected by two trolley poles mounted on the roof of the bus. The destination shows that the bus is serving Route 660 to North Finchley via Cricklewood.
Details about the bus is that it was formerly operated by London Transport built by Metro Cammell, the same manufacturer of the Tyne and Wear Metro, and was built in 1936 making it 84 years old!
Bus fleet number: 260.
Number plate: [260 CUL].
Part 2 at 10:10 shows you the tram operating on the museum's tramlines which consists of an end-to-end route meaning the tram has to reverse at each end to start a new journey.
Like the trolleybus, the tram is electric and runs a single electric wire only whereas stated above, the trolleybus runs on two. At the terminus in order to change direction, the trolley pole is lowered with another pole with this one having a hook and is spun round to the back of the tramcar where it is put back on the wire; the trolley pole must always trail behind the tram to prevent the risk of damage if pushed.
Details about the tram are that it was built by Blackpool Corporation for use on the Blackpool Corporation in 1927 making this tramcar 93 years old!
Part 3 at 22:27 shows you the narrow-gauge railway.
Details about this small but special railway are that it is called the East Suffolk Light Railway which runs along the entire northern perimeter of the museum operated by by two Simplex industrial locos that previously ran at Duxford Imperial War Museum before being delivered here to be run on the museum's 2ft gauge railway which opened in 1973. Along with the two simplex locomotives, there is also a Ruston engine, that was in use with Portland Cement at Lewes, Sussex, prior to its work at the museum.
Simplex locomotive 5 "Orfordness" , is the locomotive that can be seen in operation on the railway in this video.
Passenger coaches consist of an 18-seater coach built on a chassis with bogies that are over 100 years old; this can still be seen in use on the railway today and in this video. A four-wheel brake van which also has some passenger seating is also in operation on the railway and is built from the chassis of an old Simplex locomotive from 1934.
The railway also has a very rare piece of rolling stock which is a purple 3ft gauge luggage van from the Southwold Railway that was closed in 1929. The luggage van was built in 1885 meaning that this luggage van is 135 years old!
Because the railway is 2ft gauge and the luggage van is 3ft gauge, it can't be used on the railway's track so instead of being used, it is displayed on a small piece of track as a static exhibit that is under its own wooden awning between Chapel Road Station and Chapel Road Signal Box; not to mention that the luggage van is currently in excellent condition. The purple luggage van can be seen at 0:22, 3:14, 4:55, 7:45, 9:30, 25:25, 26:26, 28:00 and finally, 28:47.
A piece of track (gauge) can be seen here at 28:57 with the label: "Southwold Railway".
Part 4hows the supply building/ generator house at the museum which is used to supply power to the overhead wires for use by the trolleybus and tram. More information is shown from the in-video text which shows how the electricity is fed onto the wires themselves.
Please see the in-video text for more information.
After this, at 31:50, you are shown the small taxi garage, next door to the supply building, called "Handsome cabs" which houses two taxis: one that is vintage and one that is a little newer; having probably been withdrawn from service and entering preservation in the last few years or so. Details about the taxi on the left is that it is a vintage London taxi built by Austin in 1937 along with a place for luggage which can be seen next to the driver's cab at 32:40. This taxi has a LL Strachan body along with suicide doors which open backwards to prevent people from quickly jumping out without paying say, at a red light. This taxi petrol powered. And the taxi on the right is that it is a much newer, yet still old London taxi built by Car Bodies Fairways in 1994, also having an Austin engine. Like the LL Strachan taxi, the CBF taxi also has suicide doors to prevent fare dodgers. This taxi is diesel powered.
Number Plates:
LL Strachan: [ELC 837].
CBF: [L772 HJD].
Bonus details about the tractor at 2:45 are that it has a specific purpose of towing and pushing the trams and trolley buses when they are not under power. This tractor was built by Fortson in 1942 and is petrol powered.
Tractor's number plate: [795 FLK].
