Something is telling me this technology is much further than they want to let us know. Laser is old. Over 50 years by now and you can be sure they trying this for decades.

laser is old, but high intensity laser that can damage something at a distance is still something of science fiction , think of it like plasma rifle or time travel

@barbadoskado2769 a $300 handheld laser can burn retinas in a second at 10 meters range. Imagine a military laser.
@teblack22 сағат бұрын
The problem is not the laser itself. The actual issue is tracking the target and aim at the same point (very precise) for a relative time and at long distances. I don't think that Ukraine could develop something like that in his condition, if they have this, probably came from a country that are testing it in real scenarios

If you are belligerent and know an enemy has a knife you are less likely to try to get in a fist fight. If you dont know an enemy has a knife you might attack them like they were unarmed. In the same way hiding a secret weapon's capability makes the chances of a fight greater than if you say you have it and keep your enemy guessing.

Its the UK's Dragon Fire that we said months ago we will send to Ukraine. If it does what it says on the tin then it will be a very cost effective way to shoot down drones. I thought the US had cut funding for their laser weapon as they couldn't get it to work? Lasers do have limitations but according to the hype around Dragon Fire we have come up with a way to extend it's useful range in difficult conditions. It's like rotating the shield frequency of the USS Enterprise.

Even this American engineer admits the Ukrainians were highly unlikely to "leapfrog" USA, UK, etc. in developing such weapons. What's more, the Israelis developed their Iron Beam laser weapon, and also it's lite version called Lite Beam which has a suspiciously similar range of 2000 m like this one the Ukrainians made. The effectiveness of such weapons is so low the Israelis almost cancelled them, as heard from the mouth of a distinguished Israeli physics professor who worked on their development. The problems are technical and range from the inability to reload enough photon energy quickly, to battle beam dispersion in non-ideal atmospheric conditions, to track the exact same spot on the target long enough to heat it up sufficiently to melt or burn (esp. if the target quickly moves or spins). Add some fog, clouds or hypersonics and its effectiveness drops to zero. So, nice try, but still no Wunderwaffe for the Ukrainians.

Yep. Lasers are continium. You don't see "Bolts". It is direct beam emission. It heats the target. And melts it shell. It isn't new. The only problem was the mass of batteries needed. It expends lots of power. Mobile laser systems ? Any 4 star general wet dream. Triple A, effective at more than 10km, pinpoint accuracy, no drag or attrition. The only downsize is really power to feed it.
