Man to imagine that it's been 9 years that filament LEDs came on the market. Bought my first one in 2016 on a visit to my grandma in Russia and it still works in a floor lamp. 6watt, 6 filaments and 700lm. Only the circuit in the base is now audible.

The snips of knowledge! OK. I'm subscribed. I have a number of these, and I find they give a few more lumens per watt than other led bulbs. Plus the color temperature is so very comfy cozy. Three of the 2-watt ones are quite sufficient for my bathroom, and the exposed bulbs there collect compliments. I can't possibly fault you for keeping this one intact for actual use. Incandescent equivalent is roughly 10 watts of tungsten light per one watt in these (one led filament). More than 10x at higher wattages... I think there is diminishing returns with tungsten filaments. I wouldn't be shocked to see that this is brighter than a 100 watt incandescent. If you do compare, avoid getting a "long life" 100w one. Those are always dimmer.

A good presentation of these lamps, thank you. But I am still wondering how those LED filaments are cooled. LED chips are very sentive to heat. Above 100°C, they will rapidly burn out. As there is no heat sink in this design, surely gas inside the lamp is used to extract heat from the filaments and help to expell heat outside the bulb (through the glass). But what gas are they using ? Just air (not very good heat conductor) ? Helium (much better heat conductor) ? Other ?

It seems common knowledge these days that it is helium. Compared to a party balloon I guess you don't need much per bulb.

I've just had a "16 watt" one turn up to replace a 12 watt one in my outside light. Only 8 filaments, surprise surprise it only draws 6 watts.

7/8W lamp is about a 60W GLS incandescent lamp, I bought the dome types and the light is just about the same, more than a 40W lamp and almost the same as a 60W R63 reflector, which I have a lot of.

So uncap the chip and get a 300x (well, 60x at the 5x lens zoom) objective to sport around for the power IC identifiers? Thanks for looking into those; I have thought the big glass would prevent adequate air circulation for certain. Even the supply electrolytic caps and buck look low on cooling, but there's the optimist's case winning nicely (give or take the reverse surgery for some general scene lighting; shortening the adapters to get the bulb right by the natural stone might be fine.) With film awards season coming up the Hand Safety Ministry's probably got you a-listed too.

Very interesting yet again. Looks a good colour for an uplighter so I might give it a try. PS Desiccant dehumidifier still working well - better than the old compressor type. Buying that was down to your review. Regards Peter

Couple of notes about the desiccant dehumidifiers. Keep them on their low power setting for a much longer unit life, and also check for excessive dust build up. Some people have had the drums clog up completely with fluff.

Any recommended suppliers of 120V 6-8W bulbs? Silly America thinks we need to be different even if it isn't beneficial **cough metric/standard cough** and it will need to be 120v instead of 240 and it needs an Edison style base as almost all american bulbs are. It also needs to be nearly flickerless.

Hi, I have got a very similar lamp, but 4 filaments, 230V 6W. The chip in mine is marked BP2831. After ca. 2000...3000 hours the lamp failed. Is very dim, 1/10th of original. Oscillates and makes rtrtrtrtrt-Sound. It came apparent that the filament is gone! Paralled LEDs are not the best idea - are they? Have not tested the converter ...

Sorry for the thread necromancy Clive... I have a bunch of similar lamps acquired from ebay (4 filament 4W rated), and attractive as they are, they are far too bright for even a single lamp to be on in a room without an attenuating shade (which is sort of the point with these lamps) Assuming that their drive circuitry is the same, or similar, how would you go about reducing the brightness of these lamps? +magicaardvark1 It does depend on the circuitry inside. A switching driver may flicker randomly if you limit the current, but a capacitive dropper or resistive dropper could be further limited with an external capacitor. I was playing with a new lamp today and contemplating exactly that so I could make the LEDs more visible to count them.

+bigclivedotcom good call. I found a 470nF 400V cap in my parts bin. Might give that a try with a discharge resistor and see what happens. Alas I suspect that it's a switching driver. Only one way to find out :)

Hey there BC, hope all is going well. I just wondered since I recently happened upon this is if you have ever used a black light behind one of these style bulbs? I can easily see every LED that's in the string of each row. It's pretty neat so I thought I'd ask & see if you've tried it as of yet.

I just tried it with a near-UV flashlight, but it just made all the phosphor glow.

Yeah, my blacklight is a spiral style that looks just like a normal size of a 60W CFL bulb, & it makes it to where I can easily pick out these LED's for some reason??? Not certain why, but it is pretty cool to look at them that way.

If you try it with that spiral blacklight about 3 to 5 inch behind it & maybe about an inch lower in another lamp base, the way mine was set up & I could count every LED on those strings, really neat just how that worked. Much simpler counting them that way. Oh well, if you ever get one just remember to give it a try that way.

***** Well you do get the bayonet cap to ES adaptors for around 99p shipped. But you have to be aware that they can go in either way round, so the threaded bit should be treated as being live while screwing a lamp in.

How is the light colour? In my experience 'warm white' LED bulbs still tend to be a bit on the bluish side, say 3500K ish. How does it compare to an incandescent bulb?

The colour is good. The early "warm white" LEDs tended to have rather odd colours.

+Dalsir I covered one of the PCB based versions not long ago. In the COB versions I can see what looks like a four diode bridge rectifier and huge array of series chips with possibly some resistors to limit the current. These types of direct mains light sources tend to have quite strong flicker due to the complete lack of smoothing.

bigclivedotcom Oh yes, mister Flicker is strong there. Long time ago I bought cob-in-series thing. There was a... 2.2mF capacitor ! I replaced it with 180mF lol, it smoothened flicker for good, but didn`t fit in case. Can you give me a link to your video ? I struggled to find it with no luck. Oh, btw yesterday I bought next gen 6W(real) filament for just 3€, ali usually makes a little discount few days after you put item in cart.

I have quite a few warm white LED bulbs from the general electric brand which the pack claims the bulbs to be 2700k but I'd say their more like 3000k ish in my opinion.

Omri Viner It's not really noticeable. They do use smoothing and the LED array uses low current.

It isn't getting hot because it's only 8 watts. The LED is probably in the part you keep referring to as a "filament" inside the yellow phosphor sleeve. That would have been the interesting bit.

Duffy Toler It is indeed an interesting bit. If you search my channel for LED filament you'll find lots of videos on using the filaments themselves, and what's inside them.

Duffy Toler It will get a "little" hot, but it has such low mass to surface area that it cools down rapidly once turned off. If instead you had something like a solid chunk of aluminum of the same volume with 8W dissipating into it continuously, you would burn your hand if you kept it on the bulb while it was running.

It is nowhere near as bright as a 100W incandescent. Top shelf, brightest current E26 base LED bulbs "today" (will change next year and next year and so on) can only make 60W incan equivalency ~ 800-850 lumens with 8W, but it has some gains in using the clear dome instead of diffused, yet in most applications you would then need to diffuse further with your lighting enclosure so it's still lumens lost as result.

***** Yeah, I get the no shipping to isle of man a lot too. No probs, just do a search for LED filament lamp and you'll find lots of different suppliers with lots of different prices for the same lamps. Just avoid the ones with the small bases like SES, since the first thing they remove from the circuitry is the cap that prevents flicker.
