Multiple drivers w/ 2 dedicated to lowest bass (air cooled vented with bucking magnets), pulp cones w silk domes, non-parallel cabinet sides with multiple cross braces, apparently a well made cross-over board, and nice gold plated dual binding posts. A 3 way crossover requires 4 slopes. A low pass for the woofer, high pass for the mid, low pass for the mid, and high pass for the tweeter. That crossover has 4 inductors and 6 capacitors. This suggests that the 2 high pass filters might be 3rd order electrical, while the 2 low pass filters might be 2nd order electrical. If they produce good slopes that intersect in-phase then well done! 3-way crossovers for cheap are difficult! I would have like to have seen the mid-range driver be a bit smaller and pass-band optimized (maybe an accordion surround, lower xmax coil/motor, lower moving mass driver). If they are crossing that over high, then the power response is going to be pretty uneven through the crossover range coming from a 6.5" woofer. My rule of thumb for 3-ways, is either to use a very small mid-range driver, like a 3-4" and let it play up to 6-8khz so that everything but the "air" is coming from a point-source, and accept the narrowing power response to gain the point-source effect through the widest possible band, or use a pair of 3-4" drivers in MTM or larger 5-6" driver crossed over as low as the tweeter can handle. Looking for tweeters with Fs around 800hz and will cross them as low as 1200-1500hz

The frequency response is impressive, down to 25 HZ with 2 6.5 inch drivers? That's kinda hard to believe, but Cerwin Vegas always did have good bass response. It is a decent cabinet, but that "Polyfill, though "nice" actually doesn't do anything acoustically for the cabinet. You need Foam to be able to dampen the resonance. Or something called "No Res" - but it's kinda expensive. I've found Yoga mats, or foam mats for camping a cheap alternative. Most are made out of the same foam used in speakers. Just as doubling or tripling up on Mouse Pads is a good base for your bookshelf speakers. You gotta watch some of the products thanks to "Audiophiles" who will pay $100 for 2 foam speaker bases.
@generationbehindhifi8 ай бұрын
I didn't measure the speakers frequency response but IMO I believe 25Hz is a bit optimistic judging by the port tuning that I measured. I'm sure they can hit 25Hz, but its probably at -10dB from the amplitude tolerance of +-3dB in the response curve. In my room they have decent bass for their size but I think this has more to do with the high Q drivers that Cerwin-Vega is using. High Q drivers are known to have a bass hump in their response before roll off. Honestly high q drivers are pretty typical at this price point. Just about all the manufacturers used them in their affordable lines. Yes, you're correct. I should have been saying "poly fill" instead of damping. Anyways it was nice to at least see some poly fill in the cabinet because the Polk XT series doesn't use much if any when I did a tear down on their bookshelf model (XT20).

It's not a center channel so you need two of them so let's refer to this as a $700 SET of speakers. Yes, physically they look the same, but the electromechanical parameters are quite different between them. @@Prometheus1979 That's what makes this hobby so great! Looks and sound quality are a very subjective topic. If people like the red surrounds, great! People can vote with their wallet if they like them or not. Right after I released my review on the LA165 bookshelf speaker Cerwin-Vega sold out of them, which tells me there are still plenty of people willing to accept the red surrounds. A few obvious errors here...stamped ohms number is not DC ohms, it's impedance. You said air core inductors, but you show some with square iron cores right in the video. Also, yes most all cheap speakers used closed back mids or a separate chamber, tore apart dozens.

I had one that used a piece of cardboard tube and a 3mm MDF cap as a mid enclosure. They spent all their money on the carbon fibre woofer and mid cones. Tweeter was in a horn. Sounded ok for a budget speaker but let down by crossover and cabinet

Hi Scott! I didn't mean to make it sound like only poly caps and air core inductors were installed on the crossover board. My apologies for that. What I was trying to say is that Cerwin-Vega installed quality components on where it counts most, like the tweeter circuit and bandpass circuit (midrange). I can't think of another $349 floor standing speaker with 6.5" drivers in it that has a crossover like this -- 2nd or 3rd order filter which includes poly caps and air core inductors. @OxBlitzkriegxO8 ай бұрын
the crossover parts are still typical of what you will find at the price point. theres really nothing special there honestly. im sad to see the resistors on that board. im fairly certain those are there to lower the volume of the mid and woofer. those are going to get hot over time and fail. they couldve just chosen a higher impedance woofer instead. the polyfill is just sitting on the cabinet, not even pinned all around. its better than nothing but its the cheapest way to fill it. its not going to do a good job of damping the enclosure. finally, you did no kind of sweeps or waterfall graph. you cant really recommend this speaker, for or against, since you did no real measurements.
@generationbehindhifi8 ай бұрын
I'm all ears if you can name a $349 floor standing speaker that has cabinet construction like this and a high order filter that includes poly caps and air core inductors in places where it counts (tweeter and bandpass circuit). So far I haven't come across any.
@OxBlitzkriegxO8 ай бұрын
@@generationbehindhifi youre putting far too much stock in those two components. first, those air core inductors are teeny tiny and use really thin wire. second, theyre using sand cast resistors and plenty of electrolytic caps as well. those 10W resistors are going to do a lot of work and fail over time. finally, the construction isnt super terrible or anything but be real, the batting thats thrown inside isnt anything to be proud of and its not controlling any kind of box resonance whatsoever. those solely there for slightly lowering the fs of the enclosure.
@generationbehindhifi8 ай бұрын

@TomT-bn1lm8 ай бұрын
@@generationbehindhifi Of course. They cut corners on cabinets and it appears on crossovers to lower costs. They are making profit on that $350. Paper is the new cabinet material for low cost, instead of rough low density wood fiber. Generally, speaker, these budget speakers are not even close to 'transparent'. They can sound nice, but that is all, and often no real change in sound from recording to recording. If you like the sound, should be fine. Check into Elac Debut line. Probably a little more money and basically a nice sound. The Elec's are also built to a price, but at least they are designed by an award winning speaker designer.

Yeah, 25Hz is a bit optimistic for these. That's why I always measure port tuning. I would say these get down to high 30's or low 40's pretty easily. At the end of the day these are budget speakers and you have be reasonable with your expectations. However, with that being said I was pretty impressed with their bass response. You can't look at a crossover and say it's better based on park count ultimately less Parts is better if you can get away with it. Yes you are looking for air core indoctors and polypropylene caps on cheaper speakers, however pure part count and the way the board looks is completely irrelevant to the performance. Show frequency plot and on the vertical and horizontal axis and a waterfall plot to see if the drivers are in phase and any driver ringing.

@@generationbehindhifi you were impressed at the number of parts and higher order roll off = more parts. That's not always a good thing, it all depends on what is needed. Less is more, and well behaved drivers require less Parts.

@@ClassifiedBriefFirst order isn't always better either. Sometimes a designer needs a quicker slope than -6dB per octave. There are many variables at play so I can't agree that 1st order is always "better". Speaker designing is a lesson in compromises.
