The Princess of Wales and her siblings, Pippa Matthews and James Middleton, marked their 18th birthdays with a meaningful family custom, diligently maintained by their parents, Carole and Michael Middleton. In his recent autobiography, "Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life," Kate's younger brother James shares intimate details about their upbringing, including how their significant birthday was commemorated in a special manner.
James recollects, "During my adolescence, my twin passions for dogs and mechanics flourished. As my 18th birthday approached in spring 2005, my father inquired about my desired gift. He presented me with two options: a pre-owned Peugeot 206 or an old, decrepit tractor. A tractor indeed, he instinctively knew I'd opt for the unconventional choice - which I did."
The new father continued, "My dad and I hauled it onto the trailer. As we journeyed back to Berkshire through lanes adorned with wildflowers, I couldn't help but reflect on how delighted I was with my present."
Reminiscing about his sisters' milestone birthdays, he noted, "Catherine and Pippa received exquisite jewelry for their 18th birthdays, whereas mine was a tractor."
He added, "I've chosen to honor her by naming her Tilly, after our cherished family pet."
As a sibling to the future Queen, James acknowledges the immense public curiosity about his family. In his new publication, the 37-year-old recounts a poignant tale of perseverance, discussing his struggle with clinical depression and suicidal thoughts. He also writes affectionately and candidly about his siblings and parents while safeguarding their privacy. In one section, James revealed how he sought parenting advice from his sisters Kate and Pippa.
The Princess is mother to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis with her spouse Prince William, while Pippa is also a parent of three - Arthur, Grace, and Rose - with her husband James Matthews.
"It's been remarkable to witness them become mothers, displaying such dedication and resilience. I'm truly amazed by that," James remarked, before humorously adding, "I've had the privilege of observing how my sisters approach parenting and gleaning tips along the way - some I embrace, others I consider with a bit of skepticism."
Regarding the use of his sisters' children's hand-me-downs for his son Inigo, he commented, "These items represent milestones, as my sisters recall when their child wore something and their age at the time - it evokes memories for them. It's been a wonderful experience for them."
