I had a bunch of the raggedy Anne and Andy books as a kid and have a lot of fond memories attached to them. I love a little history videos and I definitely have not seen any other videos of people covering raggedy Anne recently. I didn't know she inspired Annabelle either so I learned something new today. Thanks❤🎉

Loved this, thank you. I had and read the Gruelle books as a girl and adored them. I loved the fantasy of dolls having private lives at night or when their owners were not about! I finally got a Knickerbocker Raggedy Anne and Andy one Christmas after yearning for them for years and they became my constant companions on many adventures and hours of imaginative play - loved, loved those dolls! 😊

If people are interested in learning more about the history of Johnny Gruelle and his creations, I'd highly recommend Patricia Hall's biography! She worked very closely with members of the Gruelle family and it goes in-depth into what we do know about his inspiration and creation of the original stories. And a little note on Beloved Belindy, in 1974 when Hallmark was producing merchandise, they re-designed her character to be far less offensive. She's actually designed like the other dolls now, and has a green gingham dress with an afro and a rounded nose instead of Ann's triangle nose. They also added a new black character in 1979 named Cynthia, but she only appeared in one short series and never caught on. So they definitely made some efforts.

That was really interesting :) I like videos about older doll histories. I like her in a way, and think I actually purchased a pattern or two to make my own a few years ago. Although I would do it with different hair color since red isn't for me. I don't know what I did with the patterns though. I used ot make cloth dolls long ago, and have thought of taking up that hobby again soon. As to the sad story of Mammy, well I know it is very painful for many people and I can understand why. However, I wonder (and some people will think I'm nuts), if I had a past life with a mammy that I loved. Because I have a real affection for them and feel this motherly closeness. It make me think that I had a past life with a wonderful mammy who I cared for. I know it sounds bizarre, but that's how I feel. I hope I don't get hate for that. As to other dolls you could do videos on, what about Queen Anne dolls, or Izannah Walker dolls? I like some of those unique older dolls. If you don't think my comments on mammy are appropriate, let me know and I will delete them. I don't want to offend anyone who finds this a painful subject.

That’s so cool that you have patterns somewhere for them! I feel like making cloth dolls would be such a nice hobby ☺️ and thank you for the suggestions! As far as the mammy thing, I feel I know a little about you from interacting here and I definitely believe you don’t have bad intentions. I’m genuinely unsure as to whether your thoughts would be bothersome to people in the black community so I’ll leave it to you and anyone who might respond to decide if you want to/should remove the comment since I’m not really uniquely qualified to weigh in (I hope that makes sense 😅)

Thank you, I enjoyed this latest installment of your historical series. Please continue to make them! Raggedy Ann was very much part of my childhood in the 70’s; I had both the Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls. I did read Raggedy Ann books, but they were the sanitized ‘Little Golden Books’ versions and I don’t remember a character named Beloved Belindy. That’s so very sad how she was portrayed. But not surprising for the 1920’s. My Raggedy Ann dolls are long gone now, I’m not into rag dolls so I don’t intend on getting one (or a Holly Hobby for that matter, who was also a big part of my childhood) but they are good memories and I agree the doll didn’t deserve to be appropriated by anti-vax groups. Thank you so much for all the information l feel that I ‘know’ her much better now! ❤ And don’t worry about your hair, I still remember how tough it is in those ‘in-between stages’ when you’re going from a pixie cut to longer hair. Your hair looks cute now! It’s translating well on camera and you’re very lucky to have natural curls and waves, it makes the growing out process easier. 🥰

I collect dolls I sort of do want Raggedy Ann. A room full of eyes on me can be creepy at times. Plus buying antique store dolls could be a good way to get haunted dolls. Raggedy Ann is just so creepy And it is like the poster Image of a Haunted Doll. For $25 should I take a chance ? I might be better off just buying Barbie

I think both the offensive steriotyping of black people and the anti-vax stuff come back to the same root here. Rag dolls are very old, traditional and nostalgic with ties to a simpler time of handmaking things. It's important to remember that the halo surrounding nostalgia for simpler times covers the ways that history wasn't simple or reasonable for everyone. Nostalgic symbols are often used to resist modernity - both things we can do without and things people want to present that way that are actually possitive and pogressive.
