Little bit extra
I've been working on this video for about two weeks. I wanted it to feel like a real letter to Madhouse, it's a little different I know but this is the kind of video I think this anime deserved. You've heard so many reviews by now, so many reasons to watch this show but this is why it struck a cord with me so much.
Go out and live everyday. Be brave. Be strong. Be brilliant. But most importantly be you.

It was a great and very moving video for me, Isla (notice I'm commenting twice, I'm officially a stalker otaku now!). I've just found your channel while looking over KZbin for videos on Sora Yori, which I love so much, and have of course subscribed. Thanks for making me cry again over this anime. If I may, the passage where you mentioned your grandmother was very moving. The most important thing about death is finding closure, and I'm glad you found your closure, like Shirase did with that laptop. I wish you all the best and as much success as possible and more. Thank you for your video on one of the best anime of all time and, certainly, my favorite together with Haibane, K-On and Hibike. You know, there was a time when my favorite anime was Evangelion, followed by Lain. Then I watched Haibane Renmei and discovered that what I loved about EVA is how human the characters were. From that moment on, I've always been looking for great slice-of-life/romantic comedy anime that portray human beings living human situations. Sora Yori gave me that in spaces and truckloads. And even though I can say that my motto is Hinata's "I'll eat anything, I'll barf anyting!", my love for this anime comes for the deep humanity we see in all its characters (even the goofy guy who had a crush on Gin and the marvelously funny Durian episode, topped only by the clip that goest by "Death in the Family" on KZbin). Once again, thank you! And most of all, thank you for sharing with us such personal things about your life. It was very sweet of you and, as I said, very moving for me. Hope you don't mind these tear-jerking coming from a 54-year-old man (disgusting hentai jiji!). And man, do I talk too much! Sorry about that!

Wow, this video actually made me shed a few tears. This was beautiful. I'm so glad this show exists and it's absolutely impressive how it has such a huge impact on many people in different ways. Its definitely a show that was written to inspire a new generation and I really hope it doesn't go under the radar and that it becomes an I stand anime classic. I hope this video helps people realize just what this show is capable of making a person feel in their hearts. All of our journeys to adulthood were definitely different but the message at the end is the same and so help me God if I need to scream it to the heavens. People need to watch this show, and people need to completely watch and appreciate this video that truly encapsulates some of its beauty.

People seem to think I'm crazy when I tell them this new show about 4 cute girls going to Antarctica is my favourite anime to ever come out of Madhouse. Exploring the idea of making the most of youth is so resonant with me, though I feel more like I wasted my 20s than my teenage years. I'm here now at 30, and this show comes along and somehow I feel like I can start again and keep moving, still achieve my dreams, still keep learning, keep growing as a person and do these things. Glad to see the themes resonated with you too, this was a wonderful video, look forward to seeing more from you ^_^

They should give it a watch - it is one hundred percent the best thing Madhouse has made because in 13 episodes they told a complete story that was a smash hit from beginning to end! I'm very glad you liked the video and hey we can both enjoy our youth now right relive it through these girls!

And it was also incredibly directed. The care they gave to the opening (watch Mother's Basement What's in an OP video on it, if you havent yet) alone is amazing! And everything related to the show is good, I mean, I could not fault a single moment of this show if I tried. Amazing direction, incredible voiceover work (how much pain can an actress put in her voice shouting for her character's mother a single scene?!? My favorite scene of all time), perfect soundtrack (I cry every time I listen to Nankyouku no Tayiou), fantastic quality animation (one of the best to come out of Madhouse, IMO)... a quality that I think only the best of Ghibli can equal (and for me, not top, at least not on the emotional resonance level). And you'll notice I still take too much... sorry!

I just finished the anime a last tuesday and I'm still sinkin in the feelings it gave me. I'm on my job right now and almost cryed with your video. Some clients showed up and I was like cleaning my tiny tears, I'm wearing a mask thanks to covid so it helped to dsguise my face. All I want to say is thank you for making this video. I guess no other media has touched me so deep as this beautiful anime, and it was on my top five till some minutes ago. But after hearing about your experience with this show, I think my feelings finally got clear about what Sora Yori really means to me. Now it's my favorite anime ever. So, thank you form the bottom of my heart. Make those big dreams come true.

Fuck man I cried. Both over the anime and this video. This anime means so much to me I'm 16 and have also felt that my life feels slow. My parents have been so protective of me to the point I felt like my life was out of my control and I get why they were protective of me I'm legally blind have autism but I still felt the way I did. I watch APFTTU and say myself I felt like I needed to make that big leap and it took a while but I pushed and got the freedom I desired. I was allowed to go into town and catch a bus home by myself. Sure I got on the wrong bus to begin with and that was awkward but I still found my way home. I know it was something so small but I felt like that number 5 bus was my place further than the universe. And sure I have no heart break ending my life is good and I have really felt loss once I still felt like I accomplished something. This show made me push for my freedom as an individual and I'm glad it did. Fuck I miss this show. Video is amazing btw the use of the music is way you craft a story really hits hard.

This is the best video I ever watched about someone's experience with an anime. I have never, EVER watched a story as heartfelt as the one you have with this beautiful work of art that is Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho. I'm in tears now, because it has become a very special anime for me too and you expressed masterfully what makes it so special to you, to me and to a lot of other people that surely were inspired by this tale of personal growth that is capable of improving someone's life, as it's already happening with me. When their journey ended, of course I was sad, but the feelings that stood out the most were those of gratitude, accomplishment and happiness. Thank you so much for this video, from the bottom of my heart!

I know the feelings that you express. The longing for more while being content with memories that you have. The feeling of hoping against all odds that somehow some way in a single moment that you could show them the best you have become. To show them that all their hopes and beliefs in you paid off. To let them know you have become who you are because of who they were to you. It is for that reason I have come to love anime more than I did as a child. I was a awkward child and still am awkward haha, but I still trying to find my path that will lead me to where it is I supposed to be. I don’t know if it will be good or bad, but I try my best all the way. I keep spreading the ideas I learned in anime about how family, love, and friendship are truly the most valuable thing this world has to offer. Looking back now as a 22 year old guy I can say that I should have with out a doubt have grown up but I still have a long way to go. In a world that seems set on destroying itself why not try and open your hearts to the idea that maybe it worth listening to us weebs and nerds on this one thing. Anime can teach you so much more about your self than you ever though possible.

Subbed. This video captures exactly my feelings watching this show. I wish so much I'd broken out in high school, that I had someone to influence me like Shirase. That said, it's never too late to have an adventure! I'm just a bit older than you, 28. A couple of years ago my brother and I went on our childhood dream journey-- we biked from Mongolia to Thailand. We'd both been inspired by Kino's Journey as teenagers, and this was our Antarctica. A show like this captures something beautiful about making your life move when it seems like it has stopped. It's gorgeous, and I'm so glad Madhouse made it. And I'm glad you made this video!

To this day all it takes is me seeing a shot, doesn't even need audio, of the girls running around the base and I get teary eyed. I got a lump in my throat just typing this damn comment lol. This is a series I wanted desperately to share with the people around me, but I don't really know anyone who watches this type of thing. Also I'm a 30 year old dude, usually get weird looks when I rep an anime with cute girls. Your video has provides a bit of catharsis as it feels like I can connect with someone about the series I love so much, even if the communication is a bit one sided. Thanks so much for making this. Not sure if you read comments on year-and-a-half old videos but I came to your channel from your Mother's Basement video. They way you speak, not just the word choice but the cadence of your words and dramatic timing, is borderline enthralling. In the 2 videos I've watched I've found myself slack jawed, utterly pulled in to the worlds you're describing. I look forward to following your work.

So, it's 11:20pm in Brazil right now and I was just scrolling the youtube home when I found this video with a stunning title talking about my favorite audiovisual thing I ever watched in my life. Ok, that's something, then I decided to click. I didn't know what would come next and I know I'm a bit late commentating this. First I need to thank you for taking a big amount of your time producing this, it not just made me have something to watch in a lonely and cold night but also made me feel mixed and beautiful things I didn't felt for a while. I had a love of shivers, smiles and fast heartbeats during this 11:51 minutes. Well, since the time I first got in touch with the idea of a place further than the universe (which was around the middle of 2019) I got really interested in the idea of four girls going to Antarctica (a continent I was kinda curious about but had never gave many attention). But in that time I didn't knew where to watch it since the apps I used didn't have it. Some months later a found a website who had it and decided to start watching, also without knowing what was coming next (and that's the good part of life, never knowing what can happen, because anything can happen and we can make anything happen!). While watching it I got really involved and passionate about the story of each of the 4 girls and also I felt kinda the same as Kimari, spending my youth. After watching it completly (and of course, crying a lot) I defined a goal for my life: experiencing the most I can. And I did and I'm still doing it, but it's been reaaaally hard and I'll tell why. Most of the better things of life comes from unusual situations in which you need to try new things and risk a lot to get them. This risk can be not just money, but the time you could use to make things that makes you happy like playing games. Once a friend said to me: enjoy the proccess as much as you will enjoy the results. And so I'm doing since that time. This year I alredy travelled abroad once to an exchange program with a scholarship and entered the university. But I want and need more, live in another city, in another country, meet diffferent places, different people, go to Antarctica! Why not? But to lead me, to keep showing that I'm on the right way, I always come back to the story of this 4 girls, showing me that it's possible, even being difficult and tiring sometimes. This video made me feel that trigger again, this uncontrollable desire of meeting different things. So, thank you Isla, ありがとうごさいます for made me feeling that again! and congratulations for all the hard work you put editing, wrighting and living this awesome video! ♡

Thank you for putting into words the reason I felt so much for Shirase and the end of her journey. I lost my grandmother too, a year before watching SoraYori. I was 15. In that way I think we shared a similar experience a beloved person too young. The laptop scene was very cathartic, as I interpreted it as telling the viewer that the thoughts and wishes we have towards our lost loved ones may still reach them

This video said everything I was thinking about this anime. I took it up to coin flip between this and Hibike! Euphonium as my next on my continuing deep dive back into this wonderful medium known as anime. This was heads and this won. Yorimoi put that spark of crazy, something that I've just left alone as "it'll never happen" into a "why the hell can't it happen" Thank you for this video (I know this is *really* late but... its never too late to push your boundaries? right?)

This video kinda offers the solution I've been looking for to the discontent I felt after watching the anime: the fact that I'm not going on some grand adventure or making the best of my youth. Maybe it's just romanticising youth; staring at it through rose tinted lenses. Maybe I should just be content that my youth may not be so grand and exciting as theirs but at the very least I should take away one thing: to run forward even if I'm scared and hesitant. To try to do things even if I'm scared so that maybe, just maybe, I'll experience something cool. It doesn't have to be grand. It just has to be new.

I can't believe that it took me a week to click on this video. I've never watched your videos before, but that changes today. I also absolutely adored 'A Place Further Than the Universe'. I re-watched each episode multiple times as they came out, made my own video about it, and got my kick of listening to all the other people it resonated with. This video and your story was touching, relating with me on the compounding resonation from this show. You even made me a bit dewy in the eyes. I felt a similar connection to this show and how it related to my unused past potential, my lack of true friendship, and the need for the courage to take me out to the universe. I talked about it at length in my own video on this show but it doesn't stack up to yours at all. You fit yours in so succinctly and compacted in the weight and punch of emotions i felt throughout the whole show itself. so, if there's anything to take from this rambling. It's that this video is spectacular(you deserve a whole lot of praise for this one), You have a new fan, and even if we might have had a misspent youth.. I argue our youth is not over. I argue that Youth doesn't need to be literal but just an embodiment of living life the way they do. To the fullest. As you say life is always in motion

Still goes to show that often the original anime makes for the best anime. Loved your love letter, Isla. It just made me cry some more, remembering this wondrous series. I most sincerely hope this series becomes the classic it deserves to be. You mentioned friendship (SPOILERS for the series, if it was not default already), and I commented elsewhere that it was through the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP, TRUE FRIENDSHIP, not shitty contrived stuff like we see in horrible anime like Fairy Tail (sorry, FT fans out there, but FT could not be more cliche if it tried), of friends not willing to give up even when you tell them it's OK to give up, that Shirase was given that laptop and was able to say farewell to her mother and get a dreaded but much needed closure in what is for me the most moving scene I've ever seen in my entire life in a fictional story (and in most of my real life, too). I'm tearing up and have a knot in my throat right now just thinking of Shirase shouting for her mother in front of that laptop and those 1000 unanswered emails, one for each day her mother was absent and would never return. And for all those idiots (sorry, have to say this) that think anime/animation is for kids, I'm 54. If you want to think I'm a man-child, just go right ahead and I won't hold it against you. But if you can watch that scene and not cry, you've just allowed cinicism to get the better of you.

Thank you for your kind comments and it doesn't matter what age you are or stage you are in your life anime can be enjoyed by anyone I think! The friendship in the show feels so deep and meanful truly amazingly mastered for only 13 episodes! And I to cried uncontrollably at episode 12 What a truly wonderful anime

Thank you for replying. Yes, episode 12... I don't think I'll ever gonna forget that, to the day I die. One thing about great art is that it helps to make us better people and appreciate life more. But humour is important, too. Durian and Bath Salts are vital!

Really honest and moving video! There's something about A place further than the universe that kept me watching episode after episode. I wondered what it was, but I couldn't figure it out. Was it the realistic take on friendship? Or was it the fact that these characters were doing something crazy together while I'm here at home doing nothing and watching them? It made me think about my own life and if Im actually living it to the fullest. Turns out I keep regretting I didnt do this or that and I never do something crazy. So maybe I should live my life to the fullest and enjoy it! That's what A place further than the Universe is to me! It doesnt have to be Antartica as long as youre having a good time with the people you love... And that's why this is one of my favorite new animes!

Isla, I've been binging and getting back into anime so I started off with Kakegurui. I found it so enthralling and fun. I enjoyed the simple structure of the plot and the cinematography is beautiful. I at least think that it's cinematography, I'm a film nerd over animation nerd so don't crucify me. Basically I wanted to hear your opinions on Kakegurui and whether or not you plan to make a video. Also, thank you for making content on your channel again. I came for the pokemon a while ago and stayed for your personality up till now. You show so much more than anyone else I see online and that is, in my opinion, so real. I feel like only anyone who watches even a couple of your videos would still know you like a friend. One of the best channels I've seen in a long time. KEEP GOING. (Also Kakegurui)
@IslaMcTear
@IslaMcTear 6 жыл бұрын
Hello! I don't think I'll make a video about Kakegurui directly as it has been out for a while now however I can see it featuring in some videos of mine in the future. I absolutely loved it - I thought it was sadistic and twisted I really enjoyed the art style especially the facial reactions of characters. I just had an enjoyable ride with it and I'm excited for season 2. Animation follows the same flows as film does. The only difference is it is animated rather than live action - but all the things that matter in film still matter in anime. Cinematography, sound design etc they're all important! Thank you so much for your kind words and I'm glad you've stuck around. I don't do Pokemon things as much anymore purely because there are people out there who make amazing Pokemon content and I feel like the kind of videos I make don't fit purely into the Pokemon mold! However, I'm sure I'll make another pokemon video in the future. I would talk about the anime but unfortunately those videos get blocked :( Thanks again my dude! And keep enjoying anime, I hope you find much more to watch! :D

This video was beautiful. I'm going to share a small (and somewhat cheesy) story of how this anime inspired me to do something. Recently I booked a trip with close friends (that I've opened up to a lot more recently). I was really on edge to go to Anime Expo because I love anime and my favorite idols are having their first concert in the US there. While these factors really made me want to go, I was too scared to get out of my own little "universe". That was until I didn't shut up to my friends about my excitement and they just suggested we all go. I'm 19 and I haven't done anything like a lot of the people I know that have had wonderful experience. This anime made me want to go on a journey (albeit small) and here I am. In a little less than two months I'm going to a place further than my universe with some friends I love very much.

That is a lovely tale. Everyone has some form of anxiety in some way, even the most confident of people, and the fact that you can take this step - going to an anime con with your friends is brilliant. It will open up some new doors for you and I really hope you enjoy the experience of being there - there is nothing quite like being surrounded by people who all share a similar passion to you, it's quite amazing. Have fun on your adventure and I truly hope you have many more to come
