i too started with Fallout 2. going back to play Fo1 after picking up the trillogy pack before Bethesda nabbed it. It felt like something was missing in Fo1. maybe that its just a lot of nothing around, or wider spaces. it just felt less. maybe palettized. lesser color. lesser derivatives? idk. i always felt that Fo1 was different. It didnt take away from it though. Heres something i wondered if you noticed as well: With Fallout 3 being the first 'new-age' fallout. i see alot of comparisons between it and Fo1. as FoNV was Fo2 to Fo3's Fo1. More content, better pallet of colors, items, better writing, and a much larger scope.

I wasn't even around in the 90's, yet when I picked up Fallout 1 and 2 in an Epic giveaway, I enjoyed them. They are genuinely some of my favourite games of all time, even more so than 3 and 4. They're janky, sure, but when you look past it they're incredible. I'm sorry about your mom. Also that bottle cap story is adorable.

Hey ! I remember playing house in Fallout and Fallout 2 as well ! I would take an empty house (or empty it myself), make a home out of it, then I would make up stories of my character's life in the town... it's good to have such memories, because as we grow into adults and get more grounded into the real world, we forget how natural and easy it can be to make stories up !

My intro to Fallout was a PC Magazine Demo disc. It was an early build of Junktown, but was only the main entrance to the town and had a completely self contained plot that didn’t show up in the final game. My little brother and I played that demo until we exhausted every last possible interaction we could find. We didn’t know Fallout’s release date, but when we saw the game box on the wall at the Software Etc store, there was NO arguing what game we were getting!! The manual was a piece of art and I think I still have it. I know I have my Fallout 2 disc and case. I DID have both manuals, but FO2’s manual just disappeared on me one day and I have a few suspects in mind.. anyway, I had managed to always purchase a physical copy of each game on or near release date, including the collector versions for FO3 and New Vegas. (Should have realized that 3 was going to be the CLOSEST that Bethesda would get to making a real Fallout game. “Fallout 4 was the first Fallout game I didn’t get on release day. I was probably the only person who was EXTREMELY disappointed with the released gameplay footage. And I was right. Fallout 4 may as well be “generic shooter game #8469 w/ Fallout overlay. It also became the first Fallout game I haven’t beaten multiple times or have any sudden urges to play. The entire loss of character creation in favor of just a list of “perks” is just depressing. Fallout New Vegas was supposed to be a preview of what was going to be further polished and improved as it demonstrated to Bethesda HOW a PROPER Fallout game is done!! Instead, Bethesda said “nawww, too much work” and just made sure it was pretty. Couldn’t even bother making proper dialog trees, instead making dialog sticks where all 4 choices go to the same conclusion. Here’s hoping some creative types can create a custom engine that implements permanent consequences for game choices bc the true future of Fallout now is in our hands bc Bethesda simply wants it for the art alone. Not the actual game.. Why did Todd Howard BUY Fallout from Interplay if all they were going to do was GUT the core mechanics that set Fallout apart from every other computer RPG and replace it with mindless gunplay??? He HAD to have known HOW BADLY the former Black Isle staff, mainly those involved with Fallout’s creation, wanted to be able to purchase Fallout from Interplay and collectively own it. All the sleepless nights that Tim Cain spent programming ALONE to create Fallout’s engine and get the game started…. And when he and the other devs who poured their heart, soul, and TIME OFF THE CLOCK to work on it, Todd Howard should have BACKED OFF!! and now Fallout is losing those core game mechanics and gameplay elements wholly unique to Fallout titles to just be another mindless quirky shooter.

Some manner of remake or remaster of Fallout 2 would probably be the greatest thing in gaming in a long time. It would make it accessible to newer audiences, but the challenge would be that it would have to remain true without censorship or omitting ancient jokes/memes and details. I know it's asking too much, but "impossible" is not in my lexicon. In all probability, it would be better done by an independent developer rather than Bethesda as a mod or standalone game

Fallout 2 is still my favorite. I thought New Vegas was pretty good, but the other Bethesda Fallouts don't do much for me. I had high hopes that Wasteland 2, 3, etc would carry on the torch, and Wasteland 2 really did. But W3, well..... Let's just say I'd rather keep the heavy-handed RL political subtext and my gaming separate insofar as that's possible. Very disappointed. Not sure where to go from here. I've played through Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics too many times. Maybe I need to get back into Underrail. Thanks for doing what you do, bro. Great channel. One of my favorites.

For me, I prefer the dash to NCR compared to San Fran, its a bit easier as you can take a Redding caravan there. Once there, you can rob the store in the bazaar relatively easily, depending on your sneak and steal skills, you just go direct for the shelves but I can understand the choice of San Fran, its just not my preference. I take NCR because after robbing the store, take the caravan back to Redding, next one to Vault City to get to Gecko easy, return and head to Den to get my dang car. The car is all that matters, but then after playing the game reguarly for 25 years, I have my habits and routines.

Great video! Really enjoyed hearing about how you played the game as a kid. I did something similar with Starcraft, playing it over and over with the cheats just to have fun and not stress out. Had it not been for Let's Players I would have never had the patience to give classic Fallout a chance. I finished both Fallout and Fallout 2 for the first time last year and I am already excited about doing another playthru! You are right about the difficulty, I played both games on easy and I still got one-shot by many critical hits. Absolutely fantastic experience, tho. I did my best to avoid walkthrus but some places really confused me, like needing the outhouse to explode and the door puzzle on the oil rig. Having played the 3D games first, I was already used to the whacky humor, and honestly wasn't even surprised at all by talking deathclaws. The FEV had already mutated them so far from chameleons, what is one step further with giving them true sentience? FEV boosts intelligence, plus the Enclave had a more advanced version of the virus as well as extra years of mutant research. Odds are good they had the data on deathclaws before the bombs fell, probably the original files going over everything that made them what they are. On another note, this video reminded me that Tim Cain has been making excellent videos about the creation of Fallout. If anyone hasn't checked it out yet, his stories are really interesting!

My F2 build is always many action points as possible, strength for carrying stuff, luck goes to 1, I didn't find any use to it in FB, one of the perk is thief. For a "normal" playthrough, it's the best to start the game with pickpocketing everyone in towns. 😀 I usually don't see many bugs, but I met my faith once. At the NCR city's farm. I was able to go there, but when I wanted to leave, I cannot turn off the force field. I tried everything, I tried to use all my skills, all my tools, it didn't work. I had a save waaaaay too far, so I had to give up the run. 😲When someone tells the story, he has to say: - ...and the Chosen One's path ended, he died on a farm, because he cannot climb a fence to get out... 😀

Before I start the video: I recommend to everyone to play Fallout 2 with Killap's Restoration patch and Try a mod named Fallout 1.5 (It's a separate story on its own) These I consider love letters too :) 15:28 by cameron you mean Dumar? Also Mantis is cute, I will always say it no matter what :)

Ive been a huge fallout fan since F3 and last year i finally played F1 and F2 just so i could know what happens story-wise. I intended on using a walkthrough for the entire game but found after the first hour or two I was just playing the game. I was mindblown how good these games are despite being 30 years old. Fallout 2 in particular is probably my favourite Fallout game now. Fallout 4's atmosphere cannot touch 2.

It's nice to find someone who appreciates the originals. You usually see videos made by GenZ who completely slate them - and they remind me of those two kids in back to the future 2 who say "You have to use your hands? That's like a babies toy!!!" when McFly shows them the crack shot arcade game. Like most things GenZ, I think they need a game to be immediately accessible to hold their attention. Anyway, I was 13 when I first played Fallout. I got the game free with a PC my dad bought me back in 1995. I really wanted to play Command And Conquer, and I got my dad to buy that with the PC, too. I played that for months and months before I even looked at Fallout. I played it on a demo CD from a magazine and loved it. So you can imagine how awesome it was to find out I owned the full game, unbeknown to me (the PC came with a kind of CD wallet that I never looked at because I was too busy playing C&C) because there was no mention of it being in the bundle that came with the PC. It came with "Descent", too, which was really cool for the time as well. I must have played Fallout 2 nearly constantly, until I was 19, because there's so many different ways to play it and so many different ways to complete it. I absolutely love the first 2 games. They're actually some of my best memories in life. A couple of my friends owned an played F2, too, so we'd compare characters and just generally discuss the quests etc. I'd REALLY reccomend not using a character or inventory editor the first few play throughs, because it's so much more fun when it's a challenge. Just getting the game and maxing out all your stats and HP and inventory will break the games. I feel really strongly about that. There's so much fun stuff and quests to discover. Things like, having to work your way up the weapons ladder, bartering for new armour, being $1 short of buying the rope you need for the quest lol. Please, play the games - and base your stats on how you feel YOU as a person are. Are you big and strong, or thin and lanky? Let the stats reflect your true self.

The talking creatures in Fallout 2 actually remind me a little of the novel Deus Irae by Philip K. Dick and Roger Zelazny, which is a post-nuclear science fiction novel filled with strange talking animals. And strangeness in general. It's quite surreal.

I have to disagree about the Hubologists. That joke STILL resonates today because (while they have lost some power in the last few years) the Church of Scientology is STILL VERY POWERFUL and influential, but most especially in Southern California/Hollywood and the Bay Area. They still have brain washed followers and still can get away with some very bad crimes. They just aren’t as untouchable as they used to be. Plus, it can be cathartic for a person that successfully left the church to stumble on that part of the game and see them rip into L Ron and his scam that granted him tax breaks and many young boys trapped on a boat with him on the ocean for months at a time.

Condolences. And yes, to me old school Fallouts (especially 1) are the comfort game. I often return to them. It's a comforting being a Vault Dweller or Chosen one for a bit. I still have my first save too. It does not work with Steam versions for some reason but I managed to fire it up in a VM and recreate the character. It is horrible character but it was my first try as an 11 year old from like 2003 (got the game with a gaming magazine). It is fun trying to make the character work and quite a challenge. For those wondering it is a terrible build where I had no clue, so a S4 P6 E6 C6 I6 A6 L6. Finesse, Skilled with skills tagged Throwing, Stealing, Sneak. I wanted to make a universal ninja of sorts. It's horrible lol.

I’ve only been a fan of Fallout since 2019 when I played Fallout 2 and NV. I’ve been heavily addicted ever since and it’s all thanks to 1, 2, NV, and 76. You have been one of my favorite KZbinrs of all time since then. I’m sorry for your loss I lost my father just three years ago. I hope you’re doing well friend. Thank you for helping me fall in love with this franchise.

First of all, my condolences for your loss. Secondly, I'm one of those people who was introduced to the setting first through Fallout 3 ("It's just Oblivion with guns!" am I right?) and has tried a few times but just can't get into the first two games because the top-down isometric style just doesn't work for me if it's not also smooth and responsive. The only games in that style I've ever liked were Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, BG:DA2, and Diablo 3 on console. They all let me move around at my own speed and just hack-and-slash as I liked, while in the first Fallouts, the slow point-and-click nature of the movement, the turn based nature of the combat, etc...I'm sorry, I just don't like it, no matter how great the story and writing is, it's just not fun for me to play and it makes it feel like a chore instead of a game, even if I was a maxed out super character that wouldn't fix the style of game that it is overall. Maybe I'd like them more if I had fond childhood memories of them like you do, but then again probably not because the gameplay probably would have driven me away from playing them when I was younger too. That said. I do appreciate *your* enthusiasm for them, and for the roots of the franchise's lore and like to appreciate that story and lore vicariously through videos like yours where I don't have to deal with the controls or actual gameplay myself. So thank you for sharing this with us.

I was a few months shy of 14 when Fallout 2 was first released, and I was able to use my cousin's blazing fast DSL internet access (my family computer would be using dialup for a few years yet) to download a pirated copy of it (only took a few hours!) and burn it to a blank disk. The following year I would do the same for Planescape Torment and later Baldur's Gate 2. I'd grown up on consoles that I got to play at friends apartments or houses, and was attracted to RPGs though I had no idea what really that involved, it was just an instinctual attraction to games featuring character development and a lot of reading. Prior to the original Baldur's Gate, which was my first "true" Western CRPG (though I do have very vague memories of playing a friends father's copy of Wizardry V in earlier childhood), and the Fallout games were similarly life-changing experiences for me. I remember sneaking out of my room after midnight when the rest of my family were asleep to turn on the computer and play Fallout 2, and those evenings into early mornings remain some of my favorite memories! I had to make sure nobody saw much of what I was playing due to the extraordinary violence and such; walking around New Reno where everyone was strung out or high on Jet, prostitutes and gangs roamed the streets, &c was something that blew my mind at that age, haha. I also started to experiment with drugs very early, and would often be high while playing those games (I'm sober now for almost 10 years). Anyway I still regularly replay all of the aforementioned games, but Fallout 2 will always stand out as my favorite video game of all time. It was, like New Vegas and Morrowind, lightning in a bottle and in retrospect seems a miracle it even exists.
