In March 2020, the shelter-in-place orders encouraged me to revisit my old projects, so I decided to finally complete this project which I had done circa 2013-2014 while in college.
Some technical notes on the transcription:
The piano part was transcribed as accurately as I could within the limitations (factors include the harmonics of the bass, drums, saxophone, other notes on the piano, mic distortion, etc.). Most of the chords ended up being decided based on what is the most likely chord I thought M. Tyner would play given what he's played in other situations.
I don't transcribe drums often, so please forgive my lack of idiomatic notation.
The timings of J. Coltrane's lines are very complex so the rhythms written are approximations for readability's sake.
The occasional chord symbols beneath the piano part are there to show that M. Tyner is superimposing a different chord over the original chord that would typically happen at that measure.
Articulation:
A lot of the articulation is left out on purpose because it would be much to notate given that you can listen to it. There are still discrepancies in the level of detail of the articulations. If you choose to play this, hopefully some of them will help.
Psalm Poem:
I included the poem words because I think they are an important part of the music.
Endings:
The piano arpeggiation isn't notated in the endings of the parts; generally the chord written there is arpeggiated up and down the keyboard.
If you'd like the complete sheet music you can get it here (includes individual parts and parts in Concert):

Thank You! Lots of love and effort was needed to get all this written down. However, anybody who wants to learn properly this stuff must still pick these solos by ear and notate them on their own. Afterwards they can cross reference to your transcription. Jazz enters the brain through ears and exits through the instrument. Reading somebody else's transcriptions is okay too, but it is much less efficient than transcribing.

@vmertane
@vmertane Жыл бұрын
@@sheilamacdougal4874 You are free to believe whatever you want, but academic research and essays from established Jazz Masters and educators (for example Dave Liebman) prove my point. There is a whole lineage of the transcription process in jazz dating back to Lennie Tristano and his teachings.
@sheilamacdougal4874
@sheilamacdougal4874 Жыл бұрын
@@vmertane There's a whole lineage, so what? There's also a whole lineage of some of the greatest jazz musicians who never spent time doing transcriptions. Of course listening to the masters, learning licks, reharm tricks, rhythmic and harmonic devices from them is essential. I'm talking about the laborious process of transcribing. Charlie Parker couldn't even read music.

This is utterly fantastic! Thank you so much. One question: is there a note missing at bar 174 (the first f# of the f#-a-f#-b sequence)? Or does Coltrane not play that first f#?
@OmreeG
@OmreeG 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And good question! I don't hear that first F# in that instance, so I didn't notate it there. He might be playing it in a way such that it's disguised.

@@OmreeG minute 17:13 bar 589 and 590. the note of the last voicing of bar 589 and the first voicing of 590 are from bottom to top: Bb-C-F, instead of what you wrote (G-C-F). also minute 17:39 bar 621 and bar 633 you forgot the F in the Db-G-C voicing. also minute 18:21 bar 669 the voicing in the middle of the bar is not D-Ab-C# , but Eb-Ab-C#. and also i think in some other point of the transcription. maybe i'm wrong but i'm pretty sure

It’s not interesting in the same way a lot of Coltrane is, to be sure. It’s less pure jazz, less be-bop based. I personally prefer it to any other Coltrane album overall, and I think its more accessible to more people as well.
