I’m Bisaya - born and raised in Leyte. When I was 21, I moved to Luzon for work (I’m 29 now). During my first few months here, I had a hard time speaking the language because Tagalog was rarely used in normal convos back home. Though we were taught Tagalog formally in school from elementary up to college, we never used the language in informal settings because of the notion that speaking Tagalog is like being “pa-sosyal” and that the language is very “pang-mayaman”. This notion is actually very common in rural or far-flung areas. Hence, when I moved here, speaking Tagalog proved extremely difficult. My workmates understood the predicament so they allowed me to speak in English because they thought I was better in English than Tagalog when I really wasn’t, lol. Anyway, based on experience with living and working in both Tagalog and Bisaya regions, I think that Tagalog people are very open about their thoughts and feelings (they usually speak out when in a group); while Bisaya people are extremely polite (rarely expressed thoughts because for the fear of being judged or rejected). I think I noticed this difference when we conducted trainings with two batches of participants, the first batch came from Luzon, the second batch from Visayas and Mindanao. Luzon trainees were very open about their thoughts and ideas but rarely worked in teams or in groups (lack of unity), and the competition between each trainee was very prominent; meanwhile, our Bisaya trainees were too polite, to the point wherein they rarely talked about their feelings and thoughts and just wanted to go along with everything even though they didn’t agree to it (passive) - though unity was very obvious among Bisaya trainees. In conclusion (charot, haha) I just want to say that I think we need to be open and understanding about where people are coming from because we live in different realities - and most importantly, being Tagalog or Bisaya doesn’t really dictate a person’s characteristic. Bow.

Tagalog has dialeacts also, i.e. Batangas Quezon etc. Rather than judge people by accent, most of the Tagalogs usually ask saan ang province when they hear/ notice accent from people, kase nga may iba’t ibang accent din ang ang Tagalog. Minsan out of curiosity lang din - a way to know din if kababayan nila yung tao. I usually ask “cute ng punto mo, ano province mo?” Then “uy same pala tayo tagadun din parents ko”.

"May taxi ba in cagayan de oro or padyak lang din?" "May subdivisions ba kayo dun? we answered her questions thoughtfully but we were quite offended. when that person told us "masarap yung kangkong i swear health food sya mga sis" my friend told her "yung kangkong meron din sis pero sa baboy namin pinapakain" and that manilenya stopped asking the offensive questions after that. ask yourselves why youre sooo ready to accept any rumor directed towards the president. if he was any president youre used to, you wouldnt feel as strongly. now, you wouldnt even believe the people (Davaoenos) he has served for the last 20 or so years. (3 years? youre obviously late to the party) I am one of them. I grew up looking up at him. Im definitely not brainwashed because I see his faults, but he is still a good leader. Far from any dictator, he never flaunted his name. He was never "showbiz". He is the outdated baby boomer uncle who doesnt know his curse limit or definition of political correctness, but you do know he means well. His results speak for him. He became the city's strongest silent anchor. He had his own regional program. He'd throw casual curses and jokes youve only heard now. But we never took it as a personal attack. I admit it's too much for national tv. He had to tone it down. However, his bisaya characteristics were easy targets of hate. His strong demeanor and language threw you off and now youre ready to believe any fitting rumor that suits your belief. you find it ridiculous, but it's true. he's not what youre used to, and a big part of that is him being bisaya - the very stereotype of it.

It's hard to react on this video, I don't want to generalised the entire Tagalog people. Pero, most of the people who lives in Manila are from the province. My father is from Cebu and my mom is from La Union(Ilocana). Growing up here in Manila, I find it na most of the people here are racist if they found out that you have an accent on speaking Manileño Standard Tagalog accent. And because of this, I am gonna be honest, pag tinatanung ako ng mga kaibigan ko or kaklase ko, ang sinasabi ko ay Tagalog ang mama at papa ko. Pero, as soon as I grow older and nagbabakasyon sa province ng parents ko, lumalawak na ang pananaw ko, hindi ko na tinago ang pinaggalingan ng family ko. Nagiging proud ako sa origin ng parents ko, I started learning their native tongue. And the more I interact with people residing in Manila, I learn that most of the people here are a by product of the past, meaning hindi rin sila local dito and their parents and great grandparents. I guess, it is something to do with the media kung bakit nagkaroon ng mababang tingin sa mga non Tagalog speakers, hanggang sa naipasa na itong concept na itong mababang pangtingin. Sana in the future, maayos ang lahat, at wala ng issues about this. Agymanak at Daghang Salamat sa lahat po

I grew up in an Ilonggo family, raised in Manila (Makati, specifically). When I lived there, a few Tagalogs looked down at me especially when they found out I'm from Visayas. A classmate once said "bat ganyan itsura mo para kang taga probinsya?" And it was in a Catholic school. But nevertheless, the best people I met are still Tagalogs. When we moved to Mindanao later, I found out that Bisaya speaking people are also lowkey hostile to us from Luzon (I was seen as a Tagalog there). I understood Bisaya easily because it's related to Ilonggo, then some thought I just pretended that I don't speak Bisaya. Some would also automatically judge me as the judgmental one just because I am from Luzon and would make me feel inferior. I also noticed that they were eager to learn foreign languages and would make excuses in using Filipino. Sigh. Those were the days. In this video, I am kind of annoyed with the Bisaya guy because he's kinda pa-victim and you can feel his defenses up just because he's talking to a Tagalog.

As a Manileña who moved to Mindanao, I've also witnessed Rick's attitude and tone from a friend, I guess, because they feel attacked by the system? Rick's tone/aggression sounds like it's coming from being defensive. He has experiences from the past that made him react this way and that's understandable, but he sounds victimized that Colin is almost being pushed to being the perpetrator for Rick, which obviously, he's not. This conversation could have been approached with much more openness from Rick, I feel. Edit:I was also on the receiving end of such attitude. Daming hate comments about Rick. 1.) Yes, Rick here doesn't represent the entire bisaya community and if ALL OF THE BASHERS in the comment section PAID ATTENTION, inuulit-ulit niyang sinabi na "not representing the entire bisaya" 2.) I believe when Rick said, "we enjoy martial law" he didn't miss to say the line "we feel safer" which is the point of martial law in Mindanao 3.) I could relate to Rick and how he's struggling to survive communicating and exceling in Manila. To the point na kailangan kang pagtawanan sa accent mo and feel ng iba na just because bisaya doesn't mean di ka marunong mag tagalog nor pronounce/say the correct english word/sentence. Again, this is PERSPECTIVE. I have friends in Manila who are really open minded and doesn't care kung saan and anong lahi mo. The issue why we have "imperial manila" and "bisaya being inferior" is because we think it as is, and we don't want to erradicate it from our minds. PERIODT

Based on the HATES AND BASHES comments you're referring to. I think they are not referring to Rick being Bisaya. What their point is, kung paano umatake si Rick. The way he speak his opinion and his gestures kala mo may kaaway. You can clearly see on the vid na ang kalmado lang ng awra ni Collin compare to Rick na ang bigat. I have Bisaya friends. My bestfriend is from Mindanao, but we talked about the same issue. Pinagkaiba lang, pinagusapan namin yun ng masinsinan at kalmado, hindi yung argumento just like what Rick did. 😏

@@gellootcruz6910 somehow you are right. But we didn't knew where rick's coming from. What I have noticed about Colin, is he knew how to play with his argument very well like he's not even answering the questions directly instead he twisted every statement of rick's to trigger him (rick) out to appear being "privileged". He seems like cornering rick to make him fall out from his statements without him telling his sides to properly address what rick's trying to point out. So, you might as well consider rick side, because undeniably there are really "some" manileño think that way (that bisaya are like this and that). And you may not knew that rick might be a victim of "racism" (I don't know the right word) and felt bad about maneliño prior to his appearance. I mean, let's just weight things that both of them said points which are true. So it would be better to just respect their exchanged of ideas. Besides they never represented the majority of us.

If a Manileno would say that they don't discriminate bisaya and the others, well NO most manilenos ALWAYS stereotype them.. They would mock their accent and they would mock their pronunciation.. For example the trending video of a bisaya man singing an aegis song and then ALL OF THE STUDENTS I KNOW would mock and copy him because they think its funny.. Plus it is true that the long haired guy is silently provoking the bisaya.. Amd how YOU guys say that he is the bigger person.. Well that is a common mind set of most manilenos, they would know the bigger person BASED on how they react om each other.. People are not even focusing on their content... Why the negative comments? My God! I'm from Tondo, Manila but I understand where Rick is coming from. It's happening! I had a point in my life where I also stereotyped a person mainly because of his accent and where he came from. But when I studied abroad I met a lot of people from Visayas and it changed on how I look at them. I understood where they were coming from. And at the end, Rick realized they are also streotyping Manilenos. I see myself on Colin back then when I first meet my friends from Visayas. He is listening to his rants and trying to understand where he is coming from because he knows most of it were true. That's why he said "I feel for you. I'm sorry you had to go through these kinds of experiences". Both of them now understood each other, learned from each other and then change for the better.

I think the prejudice goes both ways. I'm Tagalog, but I admire Bisayas cos most of them are trilingual from a young age (while I have yet to learn Bisaya), they enjoy better cultural and environmental diversity, they are confident and "palaban" - probably cos they feel they need to try harder to get recognized? I respect that. But don't think all of us Tagalogs think you are a second-class citizen. Personally speaking, I didn't even think that there was an "issue" about which area of the Philippines you came from and what your native language is, until I read comments on social media about "Tagalogs vs Bisayas." Prejudice leads to further division as a nation. Like Colin said, "we are just people. We all want the same thing." 🙂✌

The only reason why somebody would be affected by the stereotypes that much is because they accept those stereotypes as true. That's why they feel attacked/offended all the time. Of course, it's a different story when somebody really intends to insult you, but this could come from anyone, not just people from Manila. I get where Rick is coming from kasi ever since, may discrimination naman na talaga sa mga Bisaya. Language po sila :) So many Filipinos like Rick are actually multilingual. Galing di ba? Kaya tigilan na natin ang discrimination against other Filipino languages. 2) Mindanao Martial Law Sorry pareng Rick, but I beg to disagree with your statement. If you would talk to IPs, particularly our Lumad brothers and sisters, you would know what kind of hell they are experiencing under the Martial Law. Just because you have a good experience doesn't mean that bad things aren't happening. You can't speak for everyone living in Mindanao unless talagang nakausap mo ang bawat taong nakatira sa bawat sulok nito. Maaaring hindi ikaw o ang pamilya't mga kakilala mo ang nakakaranas ng paghihirap ng Martial Law pero you can't deny that there are Filipinos suffering. 3) Duterte Again, I would have to disagree with your statement. Duterte is being criticized because he is incomptent. Periodt. Not once did anyone mention him being a Bisaya or being from Davao kaya palpak ang pamamalakad niya. We could care less kung sang lupalop man siya nagmula. Bottomline is, he is not fit to be a leader. Duterte being from Mindanao was never an issue. Just to add lang pala hehe: Let's not send unecessary hate on Rick. It's his opinion. We all learn along the way. The most important thing is to educate and to exchange ideas in the most respectful way.

Manila is historically designed to be the captains deck which represents all best Filipinos of the archipelago that make up the Country. So now it explains why people in manila (not people from manila) feel entitled to decisions of governance to our countrys region here in mindanao. Manila, Having most central hubs of institutions for school is expected to be crafting and moulding our future leader of the country. Its a tendency not a right or a justification. I totally agree and I can say this because I grew up in a province too but at times we go to manila because most of our relatives live here. Most of the people in my province are more judgmental too and makes trivial things about a person a big deal or even an issue for them. Most of the people I meet from manila are more open and understanding as compared to the people I have met in my province who tends to generalize and make assumptions about other people most specially if you're not a local.

One of the reasons why so many "so-called youtubers" tapping Filipino audience is because of this. Bobolahin tapos pupurihin and all, tayo naman nauuto. If only you understand why Manila is so crowded and ugly, you know why? Because people from the provinces, other regions go to Manila to find their luck and better income. I just recently discovered na merong ganitong bagay about the bisayas feeling inferior towards the people from manila. I never really had that concept in mind and I just made aware that it’s a thing until I heard it from people like Erik. Whenever I meet people in general, I never really thought of where they come from but rather if we will jive or not. I never belittle someone just because they come from other parts of the Philippines. When I realize naman that they are, I’m even excited pa nga to get to know them because I could know something interesting from their place eh. In hindsight, this video also reminds of the time when I strated travelling at the southern region of the Philippines. I feel like naman na some bisaya, during some of those travels, are not accomodating when they realized na we are tagalog kasi they think we are entitled of something.

@@runtomelonely6346 It's because we are expected to speak Tagalog everytime a Tagalog speaker goes to a non-Tagalog place.

So sad na ganun tingin nyo samin. Let us not forget that eveyone in Manila is not from Manila. May Batanggas, may Cavite, Ilocos, Baguio, Pampanga, Tagaytay, Rizal et.al. They all speak their regional dialects.Sawa nakong sinasabihan akong mapagmataas, like ano ba dapat ipagmayabang ko? Mag-intindihan tayo. Kung ayaw magsalita ng Tagalog then speak English, nothing's wrong with that.

Them: Mindanao 🗣️ vs 🗣️ luzon Me: Visayas 🍿😎 🍻 Marami nga mga tagalog tourists at tagalog celebrities pumupunta nga sa Cebu for sinulog festival na puro bisaya doon🤨 But why do manileños thinks we bisaya's are living from the mountains, poor, lower class, dark skinned nor have tribes at matigas na pananalita sa pag bigkas ng tagalog with bisaya accent are a big deal......?

ngl I thought that too bc 1) There's not much representation of Visayas in the media (from my perspective) except maybe for the tourist spots stuff like that and 2) My relatives are from the provincial part of Cebu and I would always hear about it so in my mind it never occured to me that they could be as advanced as Manila. I'm originally from Luzon and moved to Visayas and conversely Bisaya people would always ask me stuff like Im from NCR. Like for example they would ask how often I encounter celebrities lol I feel like there's just a lack of connection between the Tagalogs and Bisaya people
