This is a classic Scottish piece written by Robert Burns. It was performed by Ed Miller and E.J. Jones (on pipes) at the Tartan Day Celebration at the Kennedy Center last April.

What a song, my chest swells with pride just from listening. It reminded me a lot of the German poem/song "Trotz alledem" (literally "For all that") by Ferdinand Freiligrath, with different versions beautifully performed by Wolf Bierman or Hannes Wader. The lyrics, the core message, the melody was so similar. A bit of research just turned up that Freiligrath wrote the German poem for our own German revolutions for unification, during immense struggles for early democracy and representation in the 1840s, and he based it heavily on Burns' poem (effectively translating most). I suppose these are struggles that transcended borders, and struggles that still do, as we still face them, and judging by these comments, the Scots amongst ye are just as moved by these brave ideas of freedom and brotherhood as this German lad is.

Adam Creech, Versailles Kentucky, U.S. Descendant of William Creech, one of Robert Burns' publishers. This song SPEAKS to me! ABSOLUTELY beautiful piece, soulful in expressing that there is great character and integrity in FOLKS from all walks of life. The WORLD would do well to celebrate this.

I have been blessed to see Ed (along with Rich, along with Brian) two times, and am very grateful for those evenings. Wherever a great song can be found, Ed will take it and make it even better. God bless you Ed.

A great song and a fine performance - I decided to watched the Scottish Paliament opening on the strength of his statement that the whole of parliament stood up and joined in the last verse. Disappointingly they all remained seated.

Daily we sink deeper into oligarchy and despotism here in the USA. I guess the struggle for justice never ends.

Equality and liberty are great virtues. Ironically people look to the government for answers that best come from themselves and their own communities. All that states can do is appoint someone whose role by its very existence diminishes what equality stands for and, through a convoluted system of laws and taxes, takes away more direct means of solving problems and leaves people financially disadvantaged, thus creating a vicious cycle. The corruption that is created is systemic when accountability is disjointed from power. Once there's enough power over people, then people can't peacefully dissent from authoritarianism. For all the noble sentiment, democracy is a tool for the corrupt to create the illusion of choice and manufacture consent where it does not exist. It's a long dark road of crushing liberty and prosperity when people can be convinced to vote against their own interests and treat their neighbors as opposition.

Liberated people have to be very cool. Otherwise, in a society which doesn't believe in equality and cannot possibly practice it, they would be considered extremely subversive - Alan Watts
