Li Ang (李昂) is Taiwan’s most daring and remarkable female writer. In 1983, she published The Butcher’s Wife, a fearless and incisive book exploring the darkest aspects of human nature. As Taiwan’s most internationally celebrated literary work, this story has reached an impressive global audience with translations in more than 17 languages. She uses her writing to challenge and dismantle the masks and taboos engraved in Taiwanese society.
Tom recognizes that this author is fascinated with her hometown’s layered past. He’s preparing to present her with an historic map of central Lukang. A map that may serve as a bridge to connect the vivid imagery in her writing to the real-world locations that have shaped her storytelling. These include the sacred Matsu temple, a neighborhood butcher, and even a traditional 17th century Lukang long house.
