A MAPLE WALNUT COPING BOW SAW

On Chinese bow saws, we hold the arm as a handle, without knobs or handles. Place the post hoding saw blade between pinky and ring fingers, then hold the arm with a 5-finger hold. Blade is usually 45 degree to the saw frame plane and orientated for push cuts. Now you have almost the whole width of your palm to balance the frame instead of holding a 1-in diameter knob/handle. It's a very verstile tyle of saw to use. Similar to turning/coping saws, blade tension is from the frame, meaning blade can go fully into the material with no back stopping. Blade can be thin yet still under tension. Can cut on push or pull strokes. When project is done, it can be disassembled and easy to store and transport.

That’s incredible packaging! I made one of these types of coping saws years ago, and it’s an underrated form for coping saws.

beautifully made, both box and saw. i recognize the metal parts, they are made by gramercy and they come with templates for the saw parts. i built the same saw! the kit is available from Lee Valley. the builder of the saw supplies the wood, mine is also curly maple but cherry knobs and toggle

Actually I got the pin sets from Taylor Tools. A lot cheeper. I have used the Gramercy for several of the 12” saws I made. These are steal finished. I built the original saw from the Taylor Tool plans. It was not very stable. Twisted during use. Beefed it up and made larger handles that helps with control and use.

@@willxin4517 i'm in ontario, canada and i just happened to see the kit in a lee valley store!, bought it on a whim! the kit came with handles as well, but i turned my own.

@@stevem268 are they the brass Gramercy kits? I have used them for 4 or 5 full size frame saws. But these are designed a little different. But just as effective. Taylor Tools in the states.

it is the brass gramercy kit. i would like to make a smaller saw too though, i will look into the taylor kit. are you in ontario as well? i'm in sarnia, ont @@willxin4517

I will be making another batch during the winter. Same frame wood, but different handle woods may be available. Chester likes the Walnut handles and I had some around. The others I have made are in Cherry.
