Look Mum is the exact opposite of Wintergatan. Sam is unbelievable in how he just gets shit done. He solves problems cheaply and fast; he learns what he needs to without getting sucked down rabbit holes, and knows when to say that's good enough. It's super inspiring to see how productive you can be when you don't give a fuck about making everything look or sound perfect. Wintergatan is a cautionary tale of scope creep, perfectionism, and fighting the inherent qualities of what you are working on. I don't think he actually wants to finish a marble machine. He is making more money from Patreon and KZbin than he would from performing with a finished machine. He was 90% of the way there and scraped the whole thing because the marble lift couldn't lift marbles as fast as he wanted. It didn't occur to him that he could just write music with fewer notes. Now he is constantly posting videos where he is trying to get marbles to hit with sub 10ms accuracy, which is far more accurate than any human musician. No normal person can tell the difference and it's debatable if that level of accuracy is even a good thing.

So we have a Marble computer getting its input from a music keyboard. The digital output of the Mable computer is converted to analogue which is then used as input to a synthesiser. I want to know more but my head just exploded. Sam you are a genius.

they're still just getting everything working. They can replace the keyboard with anything that generates midi, and with tiny computers just about anything can be made to generate midi.

Thank you for proving that MIDI programming is indeed “real” programming! And IMO in some ways is better for this kind of electro-mechanical sequencing than, say, Python code because of how you can adjust the BPM and the sequencer automatically adapts to whatever length sequence you put into it 😊 It kind of reminds me of machine code actually, the way you’ve got one key per function. “Turn on this output for x seconds, then turn off. Then on this other output for y seconds, then turn off.” rather than messing about with variables and functions and so on.
