I love how Mai and Ty Lee's betrayal made sense. You realize that from the very beginning, it was never loyalty that tied the three together. As soon as Azula pushed them to choose her over people they actually cared about, she lost.

And there were a lot of hints sprinkled over the show too. Mai and Ty Lee seemed to give up fights/chases quite quickly as soon as Azula wasn't there. There were also side glances between the two of them in Azula's back, such as during their meeting with the Earth King (ironically while Azula was talking about trust). And let's not forget the stink eye Mai gave her when she interrupted a date with Zuko. They were never here for Azula. Mai just wanted to leave Omashu and Ty Lee was coerced into it.

Remember when at the end of season 2 Azula said to the earth king: "it's terrible when you can't trust the people closest to you"? Azula thought she's very ironic and clever there - what she didn't know is that at that moment (literally) behind her back Mai and Ty Lee gave each other a very subtle but very foreshadowing side glance... ^^

15:00 Oh, Azula sees it. You guys are onto it. It’s interesting you mentioned the theme of love over fear. Remember that word for the finale 😶🌫️ But yes, it did cut her deep. Mai essentially confessed to Azula that she loves Zuko, and she was only associated with Azula because she was afraid of her. She never felt any love or camaraderie for Azula, which I think we can pretty much say for certain is Azula’s biggest fear. “My own mother thought I was a monster”. Not only that, but Azula always knew Ursa loved Zuko. Now she has seen Zuko get the love she wanted from her friend. Another person in Azula’s life has chosen Zuko over her. Azula strives for perfection, in her eyes she’s always done everything that was expected of her. And it’s still not good enough. She’s alone. Every encounter she has with Zuko for the rest of the show ends in a very specific way. Spot the common threads, I think it’s so interesting.
@Jungkith3 ай бұрын
I feel so sad for Azula the way you put it, and the only person she could rely on is their evil dad. Even when Ursa wasn’t around Zuko has Iroh. Azula has no one, she thinks fear is the only way she could connect to people like how her father controls the nations and how her mother scolds her, trully sad.
@WolforNuva3 ай бұрын
Well I think Azula already knew that Mai was only associated with her because she was afraid, that's not news to her. Azula thinks she's a monster, if even her own mother couldn't love her and was afraid of her, then what chance is there for anyone else to? Her early years founded the idea that fear is at the core of all her relationships, so she uses that to force the people she wants as friends to act that way, it doesn't matter to her if there's no genuine attachment behind it because she doesn't think she could even have that anyway. But Mai loving Zuko more than she fears Azula invalidates that whole perception, if her fear tactics can so easily break apart then what chance does she ever have for even something that resembles a normal friendship? And of course there's the aspects of the perfectionist losing control of the situation, and Zuko once again getting all the love. It's a deep cut because it hits pretty much all of her weak points at once. That's my "should probably have been asleep 2 hours ago" take on it anyway.
@اميرمادرا3 ай бұрын
I agree with you k fell şad for Azula and her bother too have nice day my friend❤
@Mrryn3 ай бұрын
And a big part of this, Azula was more than willing to fight Mai, to use force to reinforce the reason Mai should reassess the fear vs love equation. Because that's all she knows. And what happens? Ty Lee takes her out. With zero effort, no words, nothing. Not only did she immediately take Mai's side over hers, but she took away the one thing she felt gave her any power over anyone: her fighting ability. Ty Lee, in a moment and just a couple of strikes, took away another friend from her (Ty Lee herself), took away her ability to take back her other friend (Mai), and made her physically and emotionally powerless, literally not even able to stand on her own. Mai's betrayal was a sucker punch, but Ty Lee's was the haymaker that sent her spinning.

I posted this in the Zuko Alone episode in season 2 but I don’t think you saw it so I’ll put it here as well as it’s very relevant. It’s important to keep in mind that everything we see from their childhood is essentially from Zuko’s perspective. We see his experience as a child. We see Azula tormenting him, being the one who always received the validation he desperately sought from his father. And we see his mother being the only nurturing member of his family, trying to make up for the lack of attention he received from his father. But however sad they may be, these are his memories alone. For Azula, these same years are painted as an entirely different picture. She saw Zuko as the one to always receive the attention even though she was better than him at everything. The only one who gave her any validation was her father, whom we know only provided that validation because of her prodigious talent. She learned at a young age that she can only receive praise because of her ability. Ozai’s love for her was conditional on her ability. Zuko’s mom’s love for him was unconditional. Mai had a crush on him. Even with Iroh’s gifts it was clear which one he actually put thought into. In her young developing mind, why was Zuko so deserving of all this love when he couldn’t even firebend well and meet his expectations? We feel bad for Zuko, as we should, but we need to keep in mind that he had a number of loving and guiding forces in his life both in his mother and in Iroh. Azula on the other hand, only really had her father. Now, after all these years again we see someone who favors Zuko over Azula. Mai, despite having been heartbroken by Zuko TWICE, chooses to betray Azula and save him. Ty Lee does the same to save Mai. This cements to Azula that no one is truly on her side, even though she’s supposedly done everything right from the perspective of how she was raised. I know you guys have seen the finale already so I’ll just say this: How do you think she felt after seeing Katara, someone who’s been hurt by him so many times, who directly antagonized him for the better part of 3 seasons, cry for him in the end? That was the final thing that broke her. Everyone loves him. Nobody loves her.
@kingofbudokai3 ай бұрын
"Everything we see from their childhood is essentially from Zuko’s perspective" Except that's not how flashbacks work. What we saw is meant to represent objectively what did happen. There is no bias due to perspective of any kind. Azula WAS already a psychopath at that young age. She DID torment Zuko for fun because she was twisted. What we saw are the exact events that took place exactly as we saw them. Yes, there are other things that took place that we didn't see, but what we did see is the inarguable truth, not simply Zuko's interpretation. Whether Azula sees it differently or not is irrelevant. It ISN'T different than what we saw, end of discussion. Suggesting anything else is just trying to read into things that aren't there.
@redblobdude3 ай бұрын
@@kingofbudokai You’re confusing perspective and interpretation. I didn’t say the flashbacks were his interpretation of subjective events. I said the flashbacks we saw were from his perspective, which is just true. They were his memories. Yes they are things that objectively did happen but they are selected from his recollection of his childhood. We see everything through the limited scope of his memories which paints a picture that allows us to sympathize with him more. Azula was not a inherent psychopath. It’s extremely obvious how much the show favors nurture in the whole nature vs nurture argument. They pretty much tell you the message at the end of 3x06 when Toph exclaims that “it’s like these people are born bad” and Aang replies “No that wasn’t the point at all. Anyone is capable of great good and great evil. Everyone needs to be treated like they are worth giving a chance.” Discounting Azula as an inherent psychopath from childhood is easy to do when you see those flashbacks but its just as easy to realize there are perfectly reasonable explanations for her behavior given the environment she was raised in. It just takes a minimal amount of critical thinking.

Actually azula was never really jealous of zuko in the original series and comics. The new netflix avatar made that change which was unnecessary
@redblobdude3 ай бұрын
@@pare5108 It doesn’t take the show directly portraying her being “jealous” of Zuko for anyone to see that she clearly doesn’t have the love and support that he’s received in his life. One could argue she has no right to it which is valid enough but doesn’t discount the fact that you understand what shaped her as a child was her father’s conditional validation. She’s not jealous of Zuko. She just doesn’t understand why people gravitate towards him and is frustrated because in her view she’s better than him in every way. She is a human being who craves human connection. Even she herself clearly wants him around or she wouldn’t have even given him a chance to join her in Ba Sing Se. At that point he was already a disgrace and a fugitive she could’ve easily just taken him prisoner or killed him. I haven’t watched the Netflix live action series nor do I want to but I’d agree that it’s unnecessary to portray her being actively jealous of Zuko as it doesn’t make sense for her character to allow that weakness to be shown.

In his book, The Prince, Machiavelli discusses whether it's better to be feared or loved. He says it's best to be both, but if that's not possible, then being feared is the more reliable option. The caveat is that you can't be so feared that the people under you begin to hate you. It's so interesting how the writers juxtapose Azula, the Fire Nation princess, and Zuko, the Fire Nation prince, as examples of the two competing philosophies here.

And "I love Zuko more than I hate you" is FIREEEE. So the thing about Azula is that as much as the mother would have been able to "correct" her behaviour, she would just go to her father and boom, progress gone. Ozai clearly shaped her after himself, cunning, smart, conniving, ever plotting, ever scheming, misdirecting, manipulating, toxic, you get the picture. For Ursa to connect so well to Zuko... well it's explained more in the comics, but there's good reason to. And Azula then, in turn, gets kinda left behind by Ursa, partly because she's putting all of her energy into Zuko, but also because she's better at most things than Zuko that Ozai cares for (firebending, ruthlessness, booksmarts, etc.) so naturally, she would become daddy's girl.
@Sophiex9i3 ай бұрын
Azula's greatest flaw is that she doesn't understand that controlling people through fear is a problem no one is there because they genuinely loyal to her. Which clearly showed how being raised and influenced by Ozai prevents her from turning off that intimidating personality she's got in a normal setting it puts people off her.

As others pointed out there is a lot of foreshadowing about mai and ty lee not going along with Azula in everything. Ty Lee was in the circus and told Azula no and then Azula was going to make her do more dangerous stunts until she said yes. Ty Lee was literally recruited by fear. Mai was recruited but you can see several times she isn't 'into it'. When the Earth King is betrayed and Azula gloats about trusting those closest to you, Mai and Ty Lee exchange glances. They don't 'trust' Azula but they are afraid of her because she can shoot lightning and kill them. In the final argument, Mai says she loves Zuko and is prepared to fight and die. Ty Lee is holding her hands HOPEFUL that it de-escalates but it escalates and Ty Lee acts when Azula doesn't prepare to firebend at Mai but actually channel lightning and KILL Mai. Ty Lee knows Azula well enough to recognize and see this and that pushed Ty Lee into stopping Azula. She cares about Mai and can't let her die to lightning like that. Both girls would have gone along with Azula for almost anything but when it comes to killing people they care about or one of them, the girls rejected her.

The warden knowing Hakoda's identity makes sense and actually has some dark implications, remember that despite this being a "kids' show", it happens in a complex world with major political struggles and a war going on, and we know they try really hard (but masterfully, i must say) to soften this and giving the show a more "family friendly vibe", skipping some of the most terrible things the Fire Nation most likely has done. For example, who can assure that the Fire Nation hasn't brutally tortured rebels to reveal the identities of their leaders? It's never explicitly shown, but the context, being a war of a massive expansionist empire vs the rest of the world, makes it obvious that this type of things happen all the time off-screen

15:50 Well from my understanding, even when the mother was around she paid more attention to Zuko than Azula. Likely to make up for their dad paying more attention to Azula than Zuko, so to me it seems like it’s 100% due to nurture opposed to nature.

Ozai wasn’t precisely Zuko’s biggest fan. And Azula, since they were little, liked to be nasty to him. So, of course Ursa was going to be protective to Zuko. Now, we weren’t shown not even one scene where Azula hesitated to being mean to someone. Something that could point towards a thought like “I don’t really like doing this but this is what I was taught to do”. Nurture do is important, but Azula is more about nature.

Which really just makes this episode hit harder, because the one person she felt she could show the slightest vulnerability to just betrayed her.

@@DFAnton She apologized because she was jealous of the attention Ty Lee was getting. She wanted love which is different from wanting to be a different person.

@@1sloo She said the mean things because she was jealous. She apologized because she regretted making Ty Lee cry. With almost any other person in almost any other situation, she would've just let them cry with a smug smile on her face. You COULD argue that she regretted making Ty Lee cry because she didn't want to lose one of the only people who gave her affection, though.

@@1sloo I disagree. Azula knows she's being evil and doing evil stuff. But, she suppresses any feelings that interfere with what she thinks is being loyal to the Fire Nation and any actions that wouldn't satisfy her father. She was shaped by Ozai the moment she displayed high level fire bending potential. She was indoctrinated with the ideas that mercy, compassion, love, etc where all weaknesses. To Ozai and Ozai trained Azula: Zuko and Ursa were weaker and losers because they didn't have the strength to believe that the ends justify the means no matter the means. To Ozai, and Ozai trained Azula, anything but strength is weakness. Also, both Ozai and Azula say that they were born to rule, and everyone else was born to serve. Those thoughts were put into Azula's head.

This episode is insane. They betrayed her and for good reason.

Also Te Lee didn't actually want to join Azula, she only did so because if she didn't Azula would've destroyed the circus Ty Lee was a part of and loved, and Mai joined her out of boredom. They were never really her friends and she never treated them as such. This had to happen sooner or later

Throught out the show zuko learns how to bend the other elements and input it on his own fire banding, this moves on the gondola are very similiar to earth bending, by the end we can see that he learns a lot from other inspired by iroh

I think it's a bit of both nature and nurture with Azula, primarily nurture though and how calculating and evil Ozai is. Ursa likely did her absolute best for both children while they were babies and toddlers, unfortunately they're all trapped under Ozai's thumb. Zuko and Azula are roughly 2 years apart, so by the time Zuko started firebending and it became evident he was not gifted, it was early enough for Ozai to abandon Zuko and sink his hooks into Azula, to favor her and mould her in his image. Ozai heavily neglected Zuko which made Ursa devote more time to her son, which only helped turn Azula away from her Mom's influence. I do think Azula might have a natural lean toward psycopathic tendencies like her father as well. Either way, tough situation for her.🤷♀️

Mai is the kind of character that isn't always understood

Well... Mai should have been a character that even Azula could not read that well. They had to write her as difficult to get as possible. 😂😂

Keep in mind “friend” od a strong word to use for Azula Mai and Ti Lee’s relationship Mai family are like dukes or Margaves…. Governors. Who’s home is on the royal Palace so for Mai it’s like “oh whole if there’s are the only kids to hang out with in the neighborhood then I guess.” Though she dose generally Love Zuko, witch is why after growing up she puts up with Azula who she never feared I think. Ti Lee met Mai at the fire Academy for girls and Azula was the extra so I say Mai is ti Lee’s friend Azula is the scary girl Mai hangs out with. There’s good evidence to this. With Ti Lee not wanting to be with Azula and only going when forced because she realized Azula would do worst then set a met on fire to her troop and family. I do not think Ti Lee comes from prominent parents just well off parents. So Azula could do more then she could to Mai. Ti Lee has always feared Azula but her love for Mai out numbered the fair and she acted which out thinking by the look on her face after chi blocking Azula. Keep in mind this is just analyzing from my end and most likely not fact. Uncle iron had go back to his home plant. His people need him.

I know it's convenient for the plot to lock away Mai and Ty Lee since they're not the main characters, but come on, we all know that Mai and Ty Lee can escape the prison even with all those guards.
