Case 289: Stephen & Carol Baxter
When Mersea Island couple Stephen and Carol Baxter were found dead in their favourite recliner chairs in April 2023, there were no visible injuries or an obvious cause of death. Their house was immaculate, and nothing appeared to be missing. The case was initially ruled “unexplained, but not suspicious” until a few unusual discoveries were made.

If Luke had not been caught, Ellie would have been dead before she turned 30 - the age at which the "will" said she should take ownership of the business they had "left" in Lukes hands.

No doubt. The guy was a patient, calculated murderer, plotting things out years in advance. I wonder how much of his friendship to the Baxters was even real - were they always a target to this guy?

I’m only partway into this and I’m thinking, oh my God, how did Carol have trust in such angry, nasty, women calling her out, acting so coercive? One woman said she had her life back…didn’t Carol notice she, herself, was not doing well? I can understand people desperate for a cure, but at some point, one needs to realize it is what it is, and accept what life dishes out. How sad and how EVIL and CRUEL scammers can be.

The trust builds slowly, then comes the unhinged demands and behaviours, that’s how someone ends up listening to and taking advice from someone who’s manipulative and evil. Standard brainwashing tactics used by abusers and cults, sadly if one doesn’t know about it and can regonize it we’re all vulnerable to it.

Fent and promethazine? Good lord. Promethazine (probably better known in the States, at least, by its brand name Phenergan), despite being an antihistamine as mentioned, was an extremely common treatment for nausea (again, at least in the States) up until they started giving Zofran instead. Promethazine is a very common & effective "potentiator" of opioids, and many opioid addicts take promethazine with their opioids, often with other potentiators, to increase their high. But it also raises the risk of respiratory depression because of its sedating effects. Only 20 minutes in, so I suppose I still don't know where this is going, but it sure sounds like the perpetrator has more than a layman's knowledge of pharmacology. As if Shady Internet Doctor and her cabal of brainwashers weren't suspicious enough...

This story just kept getting more and more crazy. It started off badly with Dr Bowden who instantly raised red flags but I would never have guessed that a single, psychopathic, Machiavellian person would be behind it all. If it was a movie you would say it’s unbelievable that a single person would be willing to go to such elaborate and extreme lengths with such a convoluted plot.

From a psychologist of many years, don't believe it when someone says there's no psychological illness in someone like Luke D'Wit. And please, don't ever say he had a happy normal childhood. Someone like him is very disturbed emotionally, mentally, psychologically and the source of such serious disturbance is always in childhood, even if it doesn't seem obvious to the average person. The official definitions of "mental illness" are very narrow and linked with legal definitions, but they don't actually represent the truth.

Luke had been playing doll house with real live humans for years! He played all the parts in the play, besides Carol ,Steven ,Ellie & her husband. What an egregious cruel sadist. I think Luke had been a sociopathic odd duck since he was young. Who knows if he had other scenarios with his school friends or former co/workers My siblings & I were talking one eve about stomach aches & various things of that nature When someone commented they hadn’t been vomiting or diarrhea since they visited our grandmas friend Mrs .G. We started thinking about it and yes for sure it was true anytime we went to visit with her or she visited our grandma all 4 of us got horrible food poisoning like illness. The last time we ate very little & thank goodness she had 2 restrooms because my sister & I were in one & both boys were in the other . We would rotate throwing up & sitting on the pot. Our mom & grand grandmother wouldn’t believe us ,but we noticed they didn’t eat around her only coffee . Then the dear old lady passed away she was very Old . We stopped getting the stomach ailment. We also didn’t eat anything unless out mom or one of us cooked it. We thought perhaps some ingredient had gotten into the food by accident because these old gals didn’t see well at all. Both grandma & her friend would bring the spice jar over & ask us what does this say before they added some to the sauce. Made me think how they cook a whole meal without anyone there to read the all they spice bottles.
