Ceramic capactitors are perfect in the Amiga 1200 for anything except the audio circuit and composite video circuit. The "capacitor plague" is supposedly due to double corporate espionage, where an engineer incorrectly copied the new electrolyte formula from Rubicon. He brought it to China, where it was then re-stolen and taken to Taiwan. IIRC, Abit was the only manufacturer that admitted that their leaky caps came from Taiwan. Rubicon's formula allowed for a more compact electrolytic cap, allowing for wider range SMD use.
@stevesether2 жыл бұрын
That particular cause of capacitor problems came much later. From capacitors produced circa 1999-2007 or so. I had one of the A-Bit motherboards that failed. IIRC I bought it in maybe 1999, and it died in maybe 2002. (Pretty crummy the have hardware fail after only 3 years). I'm still curious as to what caused the capacitor plague of the early 90s, but I don't believe it was the same as the really horrible 3 year lifetime of the caps made in the the early 2000s. IIUC the problem with the early 90s caps was about "early surface mount caps". There's a LOT of Macs from that era that have self destructed from corrosive electrolyte leaking on the PCB.

The A1200 was such a bittersweet machine for me. I got an A500 in 1990 after prices had fallen to something I could afford. By 1993 when the A1200 finally came out we were all ready for "the next thing". I recall the A1200 being a disappointment in terms of both cost, and capabilities. I was a poor college student at the time. Investing in a new monitor, a new computer, and a new hard drive (my A500 had SCSI) was completely out of the question. PCs had gotten so much cheaper that they had actually become less expensive than an Amiga. Since so few were produced (especially in the US) they're still a bit UN-obtainable. It was still cool though! I kind of wish we had this design again where the computer, keyboard, hard drive are all in one unit.

@@nothlur yes, I suppose out of context of another board it can be hard to eyeball these proportions, so never mind what I said heh. I think Kailh should be clearer with their naming scheme.

@@kaitlyn__L Yeah, "mid profile mechanical switch" isn't too descriptive of them, especially when there's other actually MX compatible mid profile switches around lol. Also doesn't help that "mechanical keyboard" just means MX to most people these days, gets even more mixed up.

@@nothlur as an ALPS fan I used to get upset by that last thing, though now I’ve made peace with it for cool keycaps… and TBH I didn’t realise they’d made middle-sized MX stem compatible ones, was just thinking of the “Chocs”. So now there’s multiple kinds of “Kailh Blues” 🙄 ugh.

this reminds me. we haven't heard anything on the C64 replacement keycaps in a while. I hope that project didn't become a second dud.

Oh, there was an update a couple of days ago and it seems the project is in the last stage before production begins. Final problem was that some of the printing on the keycaps wasn’t perfectly aligned. Not long now, I would guess! :)

I guess I felt a bit guilty about not getting to the keyboard immediately (as it's the video title). :D

Looks nice, no A600 options though, but I'm sure I couldn't afford one of those anyway... :P

The website for the keyboard is no longer up! Any other places to find it?
@JanBeta Жыл бұрын
It's unfortunately no longer on sale. It was a hobbyist project to begin with and I think the demand for new Amiga keyboards was a bit overwhelming. A1200net are working on a similar project though that should be available eventually and there are some other options (that are only available in small batches mostly unfortunately), for example the Kipper2K replacement keyboard.

When did mechanical keyboards stop being the norm?
@JanBeta2 жыл бұрын
I think they were never not a thing, especially in the higher prized segments, but many standard keyboards were made in less expensive ways for quite some decades now (membranes and carbon contact plungers etc).
