It's a tribute to the original design that just adding a clear case and a black keyboard makes it look completely new. It wouldn't look out of place on a modern desk. I hear what you are saying about the nostalgia itch but you can always change it back if you want to. Speaking of itches, those bent over caps must have been in the back of your mind for ages 😊.

What I like about a lot of the retro KZbinrs is that they DO show their mistakes and things they're not proud of. Not only does it help us newbies learn (and not repeat those mistakes HOPEFULLY), but it reminds us that we're all human and always have the opportunity to do better in the future when we make mistakes. Thanks for showing this, Jan!

As a programming teacher said to us "if the fix works leave it alone" and "perfection in the enemy of the good". I recapped my A1200 years ago with new caps I have no idea on the brand or the quality of soldering, but it works. If it fails in 20 years, or the post-it note sitting under the CFcard sets it on fire, I got a couple more decades out of it.

You should flip the CF-card adapter in the opposite direction, so it doesn't cover the cooling holes on your scanline doubler. Also, take REALLY good care of that Blizzard 1230 IV. Those are prohibitively expense now. I really hope that keyboard becomes available again. I want it soooo bad.

A way to make these keyboards more readily available, could be to sell just the PCBs or a PCB/keycap-kit. I wouldn't mind building my own keyboard, with the switches of my choice. Keycaps are a bit more difficult with Amiga keys, the bigger F-keys etc.

I have to admit, I'm in two minds about the keyboard. As much as I love mech keyboards (I have five of them for all my PC boxes), I would like to keep my Amiga parts close to original. I mean, I'm all for upgrade and mods of internal stuff, but those parts that interact with me I would like to keep in the old spirit. I still want to hear that original floppy sound, I still want to feel that original keyboard - all that feeling I fell in love with 30 years ago. Like when you restore a '69 muscle car - I'd definitely use modern brakes, but I'd never use modern Recaro seats, for example.

Regarding the keys - well, the layout is in software, so if you set a German keymap the keys are where you'd expect... the only difference will be the keycaps will then be wrong :) But your muscle memory will be right :) You can always swap the Y and Z around at least :)

I tried both the German and the US layout in software now and I feel more comfortable with the US layout I think. It's not only the umlauts and the Y/Z thing, some of the punctuation and special characters are in different locations in the German layout and that's more confusing than the letters. :D

Ceramic capactitors are perfect in the Amiga 1200 for anything except the audio circuit and composite video circuit. In the audio circuit, you would lower the audio quality a little bit, but I bet it isn't that noticable. Just those THT electrolytic capacitors look a bit ugly IMO and would warrant to be redone.

@@danielmantione yes as ceramic capacitors vary depending on voltage. they will not have the correct capacitance. meaning you are putting in "random values". as youtube do not allow putting in URLs I tell you to google ceramic capacitors and voltagedepenecy and you will see.. simply put: there are a reason a special type of capacitor is used. do not change. as told. a booting machine is no proof of working caps. you could put in diodes in place of the caps and the machine would still boot. is that ok then? no.. keep the same type. period.

The "capacitor plague" is supposedly due to double corporate espionage, where an engineer incorrectly copied the new electrolyte formula from Rubicon. He brought it to China, where it was then re-stolen and taken to Taiwan. IIRC, Abit was the only manufacturer that admitted that their leaky caps came from Taiwan. Rubicon's formula allowed for a more compact electrolytic cap, allowing for wider range SMD use.
@stevesether
@stevesether 2 жыл бұрын
That particular cause of capacitor problems came much later. From capacitors produced circa 1999-2007 or so. I had one of the A-Bit motherboards that failed. IIRC I bought it in maybe 1999, and it died in maybe 2002. (Pretty crummy the have hardware fail after only 3 years). I'm still curious as to what caused the capacitor plague of the early 90s, but I don't believe it was the same as the really horrible 3 year lifetime of the caps made in the the early 2000s. IIUC the problem with the early 90s caps was about "early surface mount caps". There's a LOT of Macs from that era that have self destructed from corrosive electrolyte leaking on the PCB.

I didn’t experience any problems with the capacitors myself, but I’ve heard from a number of peeps now that there can be timing issues, especially when using fast accelerator cards and such. The specs are definitely not the same and random oscillation may appear, even if most caps are just bypass or filter caps in the A1200. 15:08 aw, man... That tape will leave a disgusting residue where you used it. Should have used hot glue instead. Apply it from the top, starting from the pins of the socket, then go around the edge of the board, over the solder joints of the socket, and wrap around the other side, that way it will be more firmly stuck on the adapter and you won't risk it coming loose.

The A1200 was such a bittersweet machine for me. I got an A500 in 1990 after prices had fallen to something I could afford. By 1993 when the A1200 finally came out we were all ready for "the next thing". I recall the A1200 being a disappointment in terms of both cost, and capabilities. I was a poor college student at the time. Investing in a new monitor, a new computer, and a new hard drive (my A500 had SCSI) was completely out of the question. PCs had gotten so much cheaper that they had actually become less expensive than an Amiga. Since so few were produced (especially in the US) they're still a bit UN-obtainable. It was still cool though! I kind of wish we had this design again where the computer, keyboard, hard drive are all in one unit.

Gotta lube those stabilizers on the keys that gave them, they sound super rattle-y. Good quality build it seems though!

Hey Jan, The keyboard looks great with your new case! 😀👍 Have you considered to taken on the project to build a Re-Amiga A1200 Rev 1.5 board? This would be very interesting experience! It would compliment the new c64 you built last year. 😉

Although I bought a black case and a black Kipper 2K (looks similar to this) keyboard so you can't see inside, I just bought a white Re-Amiga A1200 board that I'm going to build, because I know it's there :-)

I have to say how much I can't stand my original a1200 keyboard. I'd prefer a more modern white thin keyboard like you would find on a laptop. Does anyone make a Amiga1200 keyboard in white like that?

I'm drooling for that modded A1200 right now. Looks so much like the iMac G3 which I love for its design and also uses blue switches which are amazing 😄 Also like how you kept your sister's Amiga for so long, pretty neat.

Man, that keyboard looks great, shame they used terrible nonstandard switches. I see people in the comments talking about replacing the switches, and that would be nice, (especially cause blues suck) but I'm 99% sure those are a certain Kailh switch only available as red linears and these blue clickies, with overall smaller dimensions than actual MX format switches, so the footprint isn't compatible most likely. AFAIK these are the same as on the IQUNIX M80, unfortunate.

They look like standard footprint cherry compatible to me. It’s not the low profile caps, those have a different stem design. The clear casing just makes it look flatter with the foreshortening when he takes the key off
@nothlur
@nothlur 2 жыл бұрын
@@kaitlyn__L They look pretty distinctly like the Kailh mid-height switches used in the M80, which are *almost* the same design, size, and footprint of Cherry MX. Hard to notice by themselves, but nonetheless shrunk down. The colors and materials are the same as the Kailhs, the legs are noticeably flat at the ends rather than tapered as in MX switches, the edge of the top housing extends all the way over the side of the bottom housing on one edge (light pipe?), the clips seem to be the same style as the mid-heights rather than MX style or what Kailh and Outemu use for a lot of their switches, and the pins/pads seem to be closer to the plastic legs as with on the M80 (no spacing between the closest hole and via/pad rather than the slight

@@nothlur yes, I suppose out of context of another board it can be hard to eyeball these proportions, so never mind what I said heh. I think Kailh should be clearer with their naming scheme.

@@kaitlyn__L Yeah, "mid profile mechanical switch" isn't too descriptive of them, especially when there's other actually MX compatible mid profile switches around lol. Also doesn't help that "mechanical keyboard" just means MX to most people these days, gets even more mixed up.

@@nothlur as an ALPS fan I used to get upset by that last thing, though now I’ve made peace with it for cool keycaps… and TBH I didn’t realise they’d made middle-sized MX stem compatible ones, was just thinking of the “Chocs”. So now there’s multiple kinds of “Kailh Blues” 🙄 ugh.

Oh, there was an update a couple of days ago and it seems the project is in the last stage before production begins. Final problem was that some of the printing on the keycaps wasn’t perfectly aligned. Not long now, I would guess! :)

@JanBeta
@JanBeta Жыл бұрын
It's unfortunately no longer on sale. It was a hobbyist project to begin with and I think the demand for new Amiga keyboards was a bit overwhelming. A1200net are working on a similar project though that should be available eventually and there are some other options (that are only available in small batches mostly unfortunately), for example the Kipper2K replacement keyboard.

When did mechanical keyboards stop being the norm?
@JanBeta
@JanBeta 2 жыл бұрын
I think they were never not a thing, especially in the higher prized segments, but many standard keyboards were made in less expensive ways for quite some decades now (membranes and carbon contact plungers etc).
