A Medical Emergency on my Motorcycle forced me to do this. After experiencing the scary moment of blacking out and being unable to ride my motorcycle, I decided it's time to start taking my motorcycle gear a bit more seriously. The cooling vest and mesh jacket were a MUST but the armored leggings were an awesome bonus! products listed below!

I've passed out from the heat a few times as a kid working on a farm. When I worked in a local warehouse, I took salt tablets and drank plenty of water (at room temperature). Always buy a lid with adequate ventilation. Stop and take breaks -- not just gas stops. Drink fluids which contain electrolytes and just "plain" water. I've lived in some of the hottest places in America. Ride safe. Stay well.

I am glad you are looking into good gear to keep you cool. Just remember that accidents can happen on roads near your home that you know well. Ride safe and make good decisions for you. Keep making great videos. YOur channel is fabulous. Tell Jordan , "Hi" and let him know he has solid fans too. Do you have any plans to ride in Northern New England. Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire? I bought a cooling shirt from Cycle Gear about a month ago. It fits like an Under Armour shirt but wicks your sweat. You wear under your normal shirt and it will cool you as the wind goes across it. Assuming you have a good mesh jacket. AXIAL compression shirt. It is not like air condition, but it keeps your core from overheating. I did 200 miles in 100+ temp. It was hot but I never got over heated.

I know exactly what you mean when it comes to the heat. I have already had one heat stroke once. No fun. I normally ride with high vis jacket with a removable liner. It has has all the armor plates and elbow guards. But when the temp gets over 80, its just way to hot. So then I ride with my leather vest. Better than nothing. I have a Nolan full face helmet, the front does tilt up so I can get a drink of water. It also has a sun shade that slides down to block some of the sun from your eyes. I really like it. Mine is wired with speakers and a mic. It wasn't cheap, but it is nice. Had both items for 2 years now, really like the jacket and helmet.

When I lived in Arizona I would fill a camelback with ice in the am and bring two refrigerator cold 16oz bottles (these could be crushed flat when empty to be stored in full saddle bags or trunk) of water to drink until the ice started melting. Kept me from over heating and from dehydrating. This also worked for me in Iraq during the summer when it was 130+f.

I got to tell you, there is no tricks to staying cool in the 90’s except a lot of water. The only saving grace when you enter South Dakota is it’s windy. I ended up with nothing but long sleeve white moisture wicking t shirts and my helmet netted to my back seat. I just couldn’t deal with the heat last year. A neck cooling neck thing, whatever they are called, lol was a must. No gloves, nothing. I know I am going to hear it from the max protection people, but it was the only thing that worked for me. I stopped every hour, drank my ass off for 10 mins and moved on. I did 600 mile days. I am 1700 miles 1 way. I was fine. I don’t care what anyone says, there is nothing you can buy to keep you cooler than what I ended up wearing. Short of dumping 10lb bags of ice down your shirt, pants and under a helmet. I will do the same thing when I leave Thursday to head out. It’s safer to me than heat stroke. Oh I forgot, the neck thing, same over my head to keep the heat off it. They are dainase or whatever it’s called and are awesome. Don’t cheap out, you will regret it. I use a 32 oz yeti jug and drink half each hour. The 2nd hour was a gas stop and refilled at each gas stop. Works perfect. Good luck, maybe see you there.

I really wish more brands would make light colored mesh jackets. On my way back from AMA Vintage days last Sunday (9 hours) it was very toasty. I actually wet my sunshirt down in a gas station bathroom to help cool me down. It helped for a while. Stock up on Pedialyte Sport packets. They are easy to add to cold water bottles and are the best for replenishing fluids and electrolytes. I don’t handle heat well either and have has heat stroke before.

Looks like you learned a valuable lesson the hard way. Glad you are safe. Regarding using modular helmets so that you can drink without taking the full face off, there are two alternatives that you may consider. Camelback hydration systems allow you to clip the mouthpiece to your jacket or shirt making it easy to reach and get a drink with the full face helmet. Similarly you can use an insulated cup with a straw lid. I have a couple of them made by Yeti. It's possible to insert the straw into the helmet near the chin and get a drink without stopping to remove the helmet. Glad to see you bringing the topic of difficulty finding properly fitting women's riding gear to the forefront. I've heard that complaint from many female riders and co-riders and it doesn't seem to be getting addressed. Stay safe.

I have a cooling vest, the trick is do not ring out the water, especially when it’s super hot out. You want it to hold as much water as possible and last longer. Air should move through it, that’s what keeps you cool, kind of like a swamp cooler lol

Jess, both Rev'it and Revzilla have ladies mesh jackets in white. And you should wear a moist buff/neck tube too. As the water evaporates it'll cool your neck and the blood going to your head.. We used that trick when I was in the Swedish army and did long marches in the summer.

if you get to hot and can pull over or are not riding . pouring cool/cold water over the crook of your arm (opposite of your elbow) that will cool you off quickly too. i have done that many of times pitching hay, picking corn, or when i was in the Army. a camelback with ice on your back over just a T shirt works well too. your body melts the ice so you can drink it. be careful while out in the heat girl. and have fun on your trip. good vid

Hey Jess, I admire you for getting some protective gear for your trip. I have found that leggings are only good for cooler months as they don't ventilate much. I know you probably don't want to hear this, but some mesh pants are probably what you really need. I have worn jeans and mesh pants, and I have cooked in jeans while the mesh pants (even though they were black) made me feel so much cooler. They also tended to protect me from the heat off the bike as there is no mesh on the inner part of the leg against the bike. See if you can find some black mesh pants to wear.

Why not try a Camelpack has a hose so it should work with your full face helmet. You can put small icecubes with your liquid in it. I carry cooler bag with ice packs and bottle waters in it. Texas gets up to 110/112 of heat and we stop to hydrate and cool down every gas fill ups.

Vented leather jacket, preferably not black. It was totally and completely life changing for me. I can ride literally all day long in 100 degree heat and as long as I'm above 35mph I'm 90% comfortable. People say to expose skin but that's just in ones head it's actually totally and completely counter intuitive to keeping cool. Keeping your skin covered (by breathable material) is what actually keeps your internal body temperature down. ( I get a very noticeable difference just putting on a long sleeve white t-shirt vs arms exposed.) There's a reason the people that live in the middle east cover head to toe in 130+ degree heat. Exposed skin is not only literally burning, but causes your sweat to immediately evaporate which stops it from being able to do its job. Sweat sitting on the skin and then air blowing over it, is how it functions to cool a person down. I stop every 2 hours to get off, stretch, some shade, a drink, never had a single problem riding 8+ hours in 100+ heat.

Didn't see anyone else comment on it, but for the not having back pockets on the leggings. I personally don't ride with anything in my back pockets, especially for long rides, cus it murders my back and tailbone on the Softail. What I do instead, is I have a leg holster bag that I put the things I would normally have in my pockets, keys, wallet, earbuds, etc in the holster bag. It actually makes it easier to get stuff with my gloves on, cus the openings are bigger and easier to see while helmetted. Mine is a black canvas to match my black jackets and black chaps. There's a theme here. It has a flip over flap that is supposed to velcro down, but rarely did at 70+ mph, so I sewed a button and grommet in and use a hair tie through the grommet to loop over the button to stay secure. There is a wide variety of leg holster bags on Amazon, which is where I found mine. Give it a look and a thought. Hope it helps!

Hello Her Two Wheels, how are the new handle bars working out? I’ve had my lower L4-5 and S-1 fused and I have another disc going in my thoracic spine bulging. Does the higher bars help with the strain between your shoulders? 31 years old, I was 20-1/2 when you were born and going through the Police Academy. Did eight years in K-9 and my last 7 before retirement riding Police Motors. I couldn’t wear my ballistic vest during the summer because I got over heated once in a very long funeral detail from Delaware line to the Virginia state line. Be safe and one thing you need is a Police pepper spray to carry. Be safe young lady. Not all men like little ladies that have to put bricks in their pockets to keep from blowing away on a windy day. I’m planning a trip to Forgotten Angels next year if I’m still kicking. Maybe I can meet you.

((( PLEASE READ ))) I can't remember what it's called. Water Buffalo //// Camelback ///. Basically is what it is. A backpack with a plastic bottle in it, with a water tube, that goes over your shoulder into your helmet. So that you can drink water while you're going down the road.

I blacked out for half a second one night last week.. it was one of the scariest things I've ever experienced next to starting to "grey out" while choking on a piece of cheese while no one else was awake. I literally reached up to touch the lever on the sink and everything went black and then white/blue around the edges and then back to normal.. I still have no clue why it happened. I do have a brain defect called Chiari Malformation that might have caused it (possibly?) because it effects your cerebellum so if your neck was in just the right motion it might cause it but I doubt it because last I heard it wasn't that bad.. though it has been like 6 years since it was last measured so I don't know if it's gotten worse since then... I know my dyslexia has. (I'm also autistic) I can't imagine blacking out on a bike, that'd definitely be worse than the random dizzy spells I get where the whole world flips over suddenly. I hope you have somewhere to stay in Sturgis planned out because there won't be any hotels available anywhere near there.. and I hope you planned for recovery time afterwards as it's going to be a huge "super spreader" event and even if you don't get covid, just being around that many people will give you some sort of sickness just like how anytime people go to gaming/anime conventions you get the "con bug" and end up sick afterwards. They make stretchy polyester cooling shirts that are long sleeved, they also make vests with a separate cooler that pumps cold water through them and you put the cooler in your saddle bag, but they are around $400-600, it's like what they use in drag racing and NASCAR. You complaining about finding clothes that fit.. I have the same problem, I'm 6'10 mostly torso with a heavy double arch to my back called kyphosis and built like an ogre.. finding clothes that fit is almost impossible. I wear a 3XLT most times but when I went and bought Harley shirts and a sweatshirt when out local dealership changed hands I ended up having to buy a 5XL and that was still too short and that was the biggest they had.

My big issue with summer gear is its almost all black. Even my horse pee green "high vis" summer jacket still has black pannels all over it. And thats the least black I could find. Its commonly over 100 here in the summer and everythings in the bike gear shop is atleast half black. When I was 15 I could handle a black jacket on a 100 degree day. 30 years later, an I want a white one dang it. On another note. I would try to keep any medical issue like that private. The way things work today, anyone can report you to the DMV for that stuff. Dose not matter who. The DMV will then send you a letter telling you to have a doctor fill out a paper you are still fit to drive, and they only give you 30 days to have it filled out and returned before they suspend your license. The bigger problem is that the person reporting you is pretected from any legal fallout for their actions in the name of public safety. But any doctor that fills out that paper saying you are safe can now be sued if you ever get in a wreck. So no doctor wants to touch it. The ones that will, will first want a specialist to sign off on your health before they will sign off on your drivings. Coverings their butts. None of this is usually covered by insurance so its pricey and fun to get done in 30 days. As an EMS worker, I always wondered why so many people would lie about blacking out or other things like that. But after being hit with one of those letters 2 years ago and seeing all the crap it took to save my license, now I know.

My girlfriend wants to ride on the back of my bike and I will not give her a ride unless she has gear. We went to J&P and I was amazed how “big” the jackets were that fit her. She isn’t that big.

@@HerTwoWheels I was just amazed that she was trying on 4 and 5XL. She is 5'10" and has curves, but she isn't big. She also fell in love with a heavy leather jacket that wouldn't go very far in the humidity and heat of an Iowa summer. Have fun in Sturgis and be careful going out and coming back.

Totally agree! Women's riding gear is horrible! Its not made for women's sizes. Most of the time I don't wear a jacket because too hot in the summer. Thanks for the information. I will have to check out the pants. Thanks for the information.
