Hey Troy, great video. I'm thinking about getting a CFV100C. I'm curious if you've tried comparing film Vs the CFV100C back on the film camera with the same lens.
@TroyMairsАй бұрын
Thanks! I appreciate you checking it out! I haven't run that specific test, but it would lend to some really interesting results as the lens characteristics would be uniform throughout (all though the field of view would be slightly different still given the size of the film compared to the size of the digital sensor). My main objective here was to see if I could come to terms with parting ways with one of the independent systems :) I am curious now though, so if I run that test I'll put it up here! Thanks again!

You kind of need to do a comparison with a newer emulsion like ektar/portra 160 or 400 and have it scanned on an imacon for a fair comparison.
@TroyMairsАй бұрын
@@gavinlagrange6322 That may very well be the case, thanks for sharing your insight! For selfish reasons, I wanted to see how it stacked up against Porta 800 because that's my go-to film stock. So I apologize if those results weren't quite as helpful to you! I appreciate you checking out the vid!

Great comparsion! 🙌🙌🙌Here are some suggestions. The resolution comparison should take into account the focal length and censor size (44mmX33mm and 56mmX56mm), so to compare the resolution, you should have the similar focal length. And for the colour comparison part, the scans from the lab were already colour adjusted, it is suggested to scan ur own negatives and remove the colour mask on ur own, so the colour will be straight "FILM COLOUR" rather than the scan colour from the lab (which just some film look preset). By the way, you can do a self-timer on the lens in 500 series cameras, there is a V, X and M. Pull the level from M to V and change the shutter mode to the T, and it will release after 10 seconds.

Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to check it out and for sharing your thoughts! Which I might add, are very insightful! My mind went right to the field of view disparity between the lenses/sensor sizes, I hadn't really considered how comparable the resolution might be! Also, thanks for the self-timer tip! I learned something new today :)

The other piece that would be interesting is to have the digital back on the 500. Optics can always play a pivotal role on color shift, clarity and noise. Great exercise nonetheless. 🎉😊

hey there ,that green cast is strange...what light are you using don't think it has anything to do with the camera
@TroyMairsАй бұрын
@@ADFCHRONICLES I thought that too, but I noticed the green cast outdoors in daylight as well. (WB set to 5600k no shift). The light is an Intellytech Megalite Cloth 3.0. Which rendered close to neutral when shot on film. So I’m inclined to think it wasn't the light. Is there anything else I'm missing? (thanks for checking out the video btw!)

What is the reason to shoot iso 800 film ? you get more grain the higher iso film you shoot. Ground rule would be that digital saves shadows better. And the film saves highlights better
@TroyMairsАй бұрын
I think there are a lot of reason one could make to shoot any ISO film really! Why do I default to Porta 800? I find that having an ISO 800 film loaded gives me a lot of flexibilty in various lighting conditions. I can get a decent exposure indoors as well as early in the mornings or late at night without having to slow my shutter speed down to a point where I need a tripod. Then during the day I can stop down my aperture/shutter speed and keep shooting the same roll. I find myself struggling a bit more when I shoot Porta 160 or Gold 200 because of how much light they need. I like the added versatilty and the colors of Porta 800 are ones that I find to be quite pleasing (which is very much a personal preference thing). Yes, the tradeoff is a bit more grain but its a trade I'm usually willing to make. :) Thanks for checking out the video!
@baekmedierАй бұрын
@@TroyMairs Hmm but you do know that with that camera (and others that use camera backs) that you can just shoot 3 photos on one back with iso 160 and then switch it out for iso 800 or B and W.. ? I do that all the time on my Mamiya 67 pro.. and thats is why i sometimes pick up that camera instead of my Pentax 6x7 camera. Some times its a sad situation to be in if you see something that would be amazing in Black and White, but you still have 8 photos with color.. than the cameras with film backs come in handy. I understand the lighting part and that is easyer to have iso 800 an then stop down the light, but you will get more grain with a highter iso film than with a lower iso film. I personally like that.. grain don bother me if it looks a certain way.. (digital chroma noise is not pleasent) If you like a finer grain you could go lover iso or develop it one stop under and then set the camera to undercrank it The reason you get the grain is that the film negatives emulsion has silver crystals in it to be light sensitive, and they vil react diffenrent and be bigget and more visible when theres more of it. Btw love your videos as always. :) did you btw have a look at the c80 from canon ?? ;) maybe its time to go back
@TroyMairsАй бұрын
@ You make a solid point with the swappable backs! That is probably the better approach here to better utilize both the camera and the appropriate film! My problem is that I don't like to carry things with me😂 So I usually grab a camera and go, so the film that is loaded has to work for everything. (This is admittedly a character flaw!) I did see the C80… what a monster of a camera🔥Pair that with the 24-105 f2.8 and you could shoot anything!
@baekmedierАй бұрын
@@TroyMairs I find the photos in the video super nice. And i like the grain :) it was just because it sounded like you didnt like that there was so much grain. And the reason is the high sensitive iso film stock. When i like more visible grain i shoot full frame (Canon F1n) then you get even more grain. Yeah the Rf 24-105 f 2.8 and maybe the RF 15-35 f 2.8 (I do like the wide angle) The c400 and c80 does look nice, but how I would love it to have been a DGO sensor like my two C70 cameras.. Keep up the good work with the videos 🤟
@TroyMairsАй бұрын
Thanks! I do tend to lean into grain (or even add it in post to digital files). I was surprised to see just how different the grain/noise where when comparing the two side by side. I think I expected the noise at ISO 800 on a digital sensor to more noticeable and I was genuinely surprised at the disparity when I saw it for myself in the video. All that to say, I too generally like a heavy grain! I don't know if I had picked up on the C80 not having a DGO sensor, that's a bummer.. Hey, I appreciate you always watching my videos! Thank you!

that was interesting...seems the portra likes the reds..I have come across the same types of problems with the digital sensor...favouring greens....cooler.....but then I find the clouds can be offish also ranging from tinted greens & blue-ish tints rather than...white...or...grey/dark grey clouds,in saying that...the in-house wb dropper does work a treat at time of shooting & I get better results.I am currently toying with edits removing the blues mostly in the HSL module.The portrait you shot I liked, & as You stated, the film was more punchier.Lending itself to the reds again🤷♀,I dont know...im no expert.

I find it difficult to compare colors from analog and digital. Every scan is just an interpretation of the negative. Otherwise a good video.
@TroyMairsАй бұрын
That's so true, one of the things I wanted to see for myself was how/where the colors deviated, so I could make some more informed decisions when trying to recreate a certain "film" quality when editing digital photos. In a perfect world I'd be able to run that film through multiple scanners and plot the variations, buuuut this was enough for me right now :) Lol Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your thoughts!
@DoggoCatto-xz2jgАй бұрын
Nice comparison, though the white balance and color comparison portion is a bit superfluous. Film stock, lens coatings, lighting on the day, which developer, development method, which brand of scanner, how the operator white balances the scan... etc all affects color rendition on digital files from film. 2 people with 2 identical cameras shooting the same film stock on the same day will have different colors.
@TroyMairsАй бұрын
@@DoggoCatto-xz2jg Thanks for checking out the video! Yea no doubt, there are soo many factors that come in to play with that color shift, and its so easily corrected that it shouldn't be a deciding factor one way or the other. It was pretty interesting to see though! I appreciate you sharing your insight!

Digital sees in the dark! Film not close! Medium format is 56mmx55.. aprox! Film is correct Digital is fancy bigger 35mm format! It simply ain't Easier to shoot 35mm film or digital.. Kodak film unaffordable for me. I use BW 35mm self processed. I never liked Hasselblad! I used many years ago, Medium Format was Mamiyaflex TLR!
