Ajijic is a great place even for younger people. There are great restaurants but there is more to do here than eating. Their are art galleries, theater, hiking trails, thermal spas, meditation groups, massage, boating on the lake, and my wife and I are going dancing tonight at a Resturant that has live Latin/ rock music. Here are just a few things that Ajijic and the surrounding area has to offer.

I love this style of video! This is the perfect formula: showing us the town, places to eat, a little personal stuff … way to go Maddie. Ajijic is so beautiful and seems peaceful! I agree with you, Mexico has gotten expensive like many other places especially touristy areas. I am currently in Silao a small town in Guanajuato and it’s dirt cheap! No tourists, a little rough and dirty . Nothing much to do but enjoy the authentic side of Mexico so I really love it here! Great video Maddie, you have the most beautiful angelic sweet voice ever 🥰

I was there with family and friends in a group and at one point, I said, Sorry I will meet you when it's time to leave and I went off on my own adventure! People who are bored have NO imagination... and that most Certainly is not YOU! Also I am so proud of you for taking up and instrument! Your voice is your built in instrument and it is absolutely Lovely!! Keep it going! That last meal was awesome... as I was watching the ingredients going in, I was thinking... "hey I can make that" ! Hi Maddie! Welcome back to Lake Chapala. We've been living here for almost 4 years and yes, there are some old boring people here, but there are also some vibrant, active, interesting people of all ages. There are so many things to do besides eat at restaurants (though that's fun too). Since you speak Spanish so well, you have the advantage of making friends with both native Mexican residents as well as residents from other countries. There are art exhibits, music events (Jazz, Classical, Flamenco, Mariachi, etc), yoga, tiangis, festivals, etc. Hope you decide to make this your home base. PS - that Rainbow had to be a good omen!!

Hey, Maddie! You were never more lovable than when you were singing and playing the ukulele. As for Ajijic being boring nothing could be further from the truth. The culture, festivals, parades, music, so many events like the Balloon festival and many more, every imaginable food choice at the local restaurants, the Malecon, the lake, the island, the hiking in the mountains, the numerous clubs for everything, golfing, proximity to Guadalajara, and, yes, the near perfect weather. The best place I ever lived in my life. Buy that first place in last week's video. Become a Real Estate agent. Be happy. We all love you!
@debrabowers4949 Жыл бұрын
Hi Maddie. I met you briefly at the Globos festival recently. You looked like you were having fun. No matter where you go, there you are. Fitting quote for this area. Any place is what you make of it and no place will insure your own happiness. Ajijic is "boring" because there are not a lot of young folk activities...I guess. You do have excellent restaurant choices, lots of live music of all kinds, wonderful weather, easy access to an airport, Guadalajara is one hour away, lots of shopping, cinemas showing new films, three live theaters, a casino, four hour drive to a variety of beach towns, lovely weekly markets, lively festivals, strong traditional activities, friendly locals, good library, lots of craft choices, a ukulele club, etc. Granted there are many folks of a certain age enjoying these activities but more "work from home" younger types are also coming down. I have lived in Patzcuaro, San Miguel de Allende, Jocotepec, several towns in Peru, and have been to at least 25 states in Mexico and have not found anyplace that feels more like home than here. I came here to live the first time when I was 19 years old in 1972 and it has changed dramatically...but so has every place on earth. Change is the only constant. Settle in and enjoy. Alan

Hi Maddie, first time writer here longtime listener. I think you’re absolutely right about plugging into the community in Ajijic for success . I read about a woman who left San Miguel because she was tired of the party party party all the time. She went back home so she could plug into her old life. I think that’s what we’re required to do wherever we live. We need to plug-in to life and the community, and then we find happiness.

Dear Maddie~ I was moved by learning in one of your videos that you are a serious trooper in having survived major poisoning (mercury?). It opened my eyes to how courageous and resilient you are ... even if you don't always feel as if you are. (Especially those times!) One of my favorite quotes of all time comes from a story in the book (not the movie) To Kill A Mockingbird. Atticus Finch, an understated but stalwart hero, of integrity, tells his children: “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” I just love that. Because our most profound victories in life are not as we would prefer (with medals, awards, money, or fanfare); they are when we are alone in our struggles and wonder if we can make it another day... and we do! At any rate, hearing about your difficult year just made me realize you are someone I can really appreciate, far more than just a fun, cook gal sharing Mexico travels. I am cheering you on, not just re: the vlog, but for you in Life. OK. Here is input you may already have, and I don't like mentioning anything not good about Ajijic (especially as one of my good friends wants to move there). I have been researching where I might wish to live in Mexico, and in that process came some pointers from a guy who is married to a Mexican local in Guanajuato. She is a lifelong; he has lived there with her for 16 years. He said to research pollution in Lake Chapala (he said that neither expats or locals really care to talk about it, but as you have had to deal with heavy metals poisoning... the last thing I want to do is stress you out... but I decided to write this, because if I were in your shoes, I would want to know before deciding to buy a home). I read articles and watched videos on the subject. My honest assessment based on that? The chemical contamination is high. Unless the government has changed position and taken notable measures to stop companies like Driscoll from emptying their chemical sprays into the river which pours into the lake... it's there. The local governor? In an interview was smiling and saying there is no pollution issue whatsoever, the lake is fine. But other articles showed an unusually high level of kidney failure happening amongst local children living around the lake. (Part of the news story's concern was that it seems difficult for people to change a way of living they grew up with; thus, even if told not to drink the water, those that grew up doing this have a hard time switching gears, especially when not using the water means dealing with other logistical and financial concerns. It seems that the government officials are not going to interfere with the mega agriculture companies in the area, for they do not wish to lose the revenue gained by having such big companies in their region. And so... water pollution has largely gone uninterrupted. (I suppose one could simply load up on the large version of Life Straws. They have the larger unit type that can give showers or provide water for a village, I think 10,000 gallons worth for a $70 USD unit. (I don't work for them. I'm researching getting water purifiers as well. :) In the end, I felt I ought to mention this, as it might be highly relevant to you. For this reason, I'd go to Queretero instead. (If you love Ajijic enough to want to stay, that local told me there are several littler lakes which are much cleaner in the area, though he did not specify which ones.) I think the need for an uncontaminated environ as well as access to natural supplements represent my greatest reservations about Mexico. I really like what I see of Merida, except I don't know if I could really survive the temperatures there. I think for myself, Queretero sounds like a best option. But I don't assume that what I prefer translates to what everyone else should do or prefer. Best WIshes!

Plus, its only a 30-45 minute drive to the Guadalajara airport for all of your traveling adventures outside of Mexico. People thought I was crazy (and too young) at the time but it was an excellent rental and it's a great community that has only improved in terms of infrastructure & more things to do. The weather is really great year-round, as close to Southern California as you can get and if you like to travel, the Central location & proximity to the airport & many fun adventures within a day's drive is great! Of course it's not for everybody but there is definitely a reason (or many!) so many people choose Lake Chapala. With that said, you have to choose what feels best to you! ;)

A few years ago, I vacationed with a friend and her dad from Guadalajara. We stayed at a wonderful bed & breakfast in Ajicjic. Then we took the bus to lake Chapala for the day. both places were absolutely incredible. We wandered a few of the streets in Ajicjic to find local family restaurants just seemingly set up in their own back yard for come as you are breakfasts, lunches or dinner. Amazing little town. Lake Chapala had some great restaurants overlooking the water as well. We loved walking on the boardwalk around the lake too with all the vendors and musicians there! Absolutely charming towns!

Hey Maddie didn’t know you have such a beautiful voice! Hope to see you sing Moon River one of this days! And Ajijic looks beautiful and calm, but you got me at Esquite 😍 Buy a house where you can get an esquite like that!

Love your videos. Mexico is on my emmerlijstje (that's Netherlandish for bucket list) and you keep me in love with the place (even though I've not been there yet). On a different note (musical pun there (really bad one, I admit)), your voice is actually pretty good. Nice to hear a different side of your talents. Kind regards!
