Not that many were martyred in the Coliseum. It was mostly for blood sports of all kinds. Circus Maximus was where most of the Christians were martyred. Its a short distance from the Coliseum. Nero's palace had a connection to Circus Maximus where he could securely walk out to his private trackside suite to watch the chariot races. That's likely why the Circus Max was the martyr site. There's nothing there now. If you didn't know about it you'd think you're walking across a flat grassy park.

@@royalprotector No problem. Its been ten years since I was there so I took a peek at Google Maps satellite. I see some stone at one end. And see the remnants of the walkway from the palace to the edge of the Circus. The emporers had a habit of tearing down the prior guy's buildings to put up his own monuments to himself. So I can't say for certain the palace ruins above the racetrack are Nero's or somone elses. Frankly I was overwhelmed by the size of the area and the many layers of history there. To illustrate this I totally missed the Arch of Titus. I wanted to see the carvings of his triumph march carrying the spoils from the Jerusalem Temple. I must''ve been in a daze as I was close to it by the Coliseum but somehow never saw it. Love to go back and spend 10 days instead of 3. So much to contemplate!

If the early Christians could continue one through such vile torture...so can I. My pain is tolerable...I just have to cope. Even when left to cope alone...I have God and the comfort of Jesus. 1.A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and pow’r are great, and, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. 2.Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle. 3.And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us; The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him. 4.That word above all earthly pow’rs, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth; Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever.
