When people tell me that they think nothing, I think immediately "HOW?!". And then I have a million other thoughts about how unimaginable weird and crazy and unbelievable the thought about people NOT thinking ALL THE TIME is.
@RickHasADHD5 ай бұрын
And then I'm not thinking about what I'm doing when I'm doing it. Or I'm not listening to people who are talking to me. Even if it's something important! No wonder I sometimes doubt whether something that happened to me actually did. I have trouble remembering what happened or even if it happened. The reason is simple: I wasn't 'there' when in happened. I may have been there physically, but my attention was on something a thousand miles away.

Kudos to everyone who has a brain like this. It’s exhausting! Brains like this are really difficult at an older age as you start to match symptoms of dementia, but it’s just ADHD.

As far as I know, I'm neurotypical but my brain still has a hard time meditating and staying focused. In a scenario like this, I would probably be inventing ridiculous stories in my head, thinking about procrastinated tasks, having hypothetical conversations with people I care or made me angry recently... I'm not expert, but perhaps the difference may be not the perpetual thinking, but the amount of topic changes and the capacity to maintain one line of thinking for a little longer.
@anagsom3765 ай бұрын
@@BobOBob No, if that was the case meditating would be easy for most of the population and it is NOT. Even for us neurotypicals it's hard to get control of our own thoughts. It certainly and truly is harder for neurodivergent people, but that does not mean the rest of us live free of intrusive thoughts or have "next to nothing" speaking in our heads.

This is exactly my brain, except I also always have at least one song playing on repeat as well (sometimes more than one - they either rapidly switch like two radio stations fighting for the same frequency, or my brain creates its own mash-up songs 😝). I can't imagine what it's like for "normal" people - is it actually possible to seriously clear your mind and think of nothing???

@anagsom3765 ай бұрын
I think my husband experience this too. Always at least one song in his head, sometimes aloud. He likes to play music really loud and I've come to believe that it helps him focus somehow. Also, for the question "I can't imagine what it's like for "normal" people - is it actually possible to seriously clear your mind and think of nothing???"... in my experience no, it is not 😅 I either lose my focus every three seconds or fall asleep. But I think we have some advantages, for example, if I decide to meditate I may focus enough to set my yoga mat, play soft music and start the exercise, while my husband would start to look for the mat and end up going to the store instead because he lost his focus entirely.

Most tedious is the endless waiting whilst others try explaining something and your brains' gotten to, gone past, and is already seeing where the issues and the potentials are, but without annoying the other person by interrupting to get them to cathch up on their idea you've already gone past, etc. Ever watched people with ADD in a group together on any topic. So much animation, fun, arm waving, etc. Topic remains unresolved. Liking the use of the 'Dingggg'. Works. [Meds? Nope. Not for me.]

When I need to sit still, I listen to songs in my head. I was a teen in the 80's and got my first walkman in 1982. Wearing headphones was a LIFE SAVER as an undiagnosed ADHD girl. Even if my music was turned off, I had a legit excuse for not "listening" because people could SEE that I was wearing headphones. (teachers hated my walkman, so school was still a waking nightmare, Haha!) I'm in my 50's and now I have headphones stashed all over my house and car in case one set isn't charged, I've got a back-up set. If I really need to get some work done, it's classic Metallica from the early years. That's enough noise to help anyone focus for extended periods of time.
