Directly from Ligonier Ministries: In the New Testament, twelve disciples were commissioned as Apostles. After Judas’s death, the church replaced the vacancy by selecting Matthias, as Acts records. To this number Jesus added the Apostle Paul as the special Apostle to the gentiles. Paul’s apostleship was a matter of some debate because he did not meet all of the requirements for apostleship set forth in Acts. The criteria for apostleship included being: (1) a disciple of Jesus during His earthly ministry, (2) an eyewitness of the Resurrection, and (3) called and commissioned directly by Christ. Paul was not a former disciple, and his vision of the resurrected Christ occurred after Jesus’ ascension. Paul was not an eyewitness of the Resurrection in the same way the other Apostles were. Nevertheless, Paul was directly called to the office by Christ. His call was confirmed by the other Apostles, whose apostleship was not in doubt and was authenticated by the miracles God performed through him, attesting his authority as an Apostolic agent of revelation. By the late first century, the postapostolic fathers clearly recognized that their authority was subordinate to the original Apostles. There are no official apostles alive today as no one can meet the biblical criteria for the office or be confirmed by the original Apostles, as Paul was. @@christsforgiveness I noticed you did not have a Biblical backing or response to the gifts of Apostleship disappearing with the Apostolic age. Your claimed stance contradicts Biblical teaching on this topic. As also clearly demonstrated in the expository teachings of some of the greatest theologians of our time, including R.C. Sproul, John MacArthur, Steven Lawson, G3 Ministries, and so on. The Word is the source of truth, not feelings or on-demand commands outside the will of the Holy Spirit. I will say your closer to being an apostle than the self proclaimed in America...... Apostles main function is to lay the foundation.......Preach Jesus Christ to regions who NEVER heard the gospel....live among them as example.....convert and assemble a church....Set one over it...then go to another uncharted area....check in every now and them with the converted church... overseer ...rinse and repeat......That's the life of an apostle

Wrong, the function of an apostle is one who first builds or governs churches in the body of Christ. A missionary could be an apostle, but a missionary could very well be a pastor, an evangelist, a prophet etc. They could be any part of the five fold, not just an apostle and not all are called to apostleships.

The word missionary originated in 1598 by the Jesuits, who are catholic. This term is not found in the bible, it began in the 17th century according to google, from the latin term missionarius meaning "one who is sent on a mission. According to wikipedia, a missionary is a member of a religious group who is sent into an area in order to promote its faith, or provide services to people, such as education, literacy, social justice, health care and economic development. I have a question. I do apologetics through KZbin and I speak with Muslims, am I considered as an apostle? Or is an apostle mean that you leave your family and your job and go out in the streets to preach to the world?

No, to be considered as an Apostle it is not just preaching or evangelizing but also planting/appointing. Planting is the key word. Must be called by God to be in that Office. He gives you the grace to fulfill the calling. For example, if you evangelize doesn't mean you are in the Office of the Evangelist. As Christians/Disciples we are ALL called to share the good news. With that said, one who is called in the Office of Evangelist carries a greater grace. You will notice a difference when evangelizing with them. It is to a greater extent. Hope this helps.

I think that is an evangelist. And apostle is a person that plants churches according to biblical definitions. I’d say a prophet would be someone that has revelations and also convict the people for their sins, a pastor is someone that talks to their sheep in an assembly and a teacher I assume is someone that writhing that ministry helps edify the believers in the Word of the Almighty. This video by David made me search this matter so what I’m saying is my understanding after many years reading Scriptures, but as with anything I’ll pray and seek more understanding from the Almighty and Christ for this subject. I do agree with David that we have apostles and they are what is called missionaries. So if you go around the world and you preach the Gospel helping convert unbelievers without building churches you would be an evangelist. I still have more to learn about this matter but I do agree with David that Apostles are still around, Paul himself wasn’t from the 12 and is called an Apostle. John is an Apostle and also a prophet for he gave us the book of Revelation, while Isiah and Ezekiel were prophets as they were convicting Israel for repentance and giving revelations… Joel is a prophet as well and so on, they weren’t evangelists or apostles as they weren’t going around the world planting churches and converting people to the Torah.

Thank you for this subject David, and all Word of the Creator is to edify the body of Christ. I do think we have Apostles nowadays such as yourself for you plant churches around the world. I also think that are prophets that have revelations and convict the people for their sins as did the prophets of old, I do think that evangelists are also different as they are the preachers on the streets that spread the Gospel but not necessarily prophesy or build churches, as well as Pastors that tend for their flock in an assembly established (in a church planted by an apostle) and a teacher they edifies the body of Christ within those established assemblies by developing the understand within the Scriptures, giving milk and meat to develop the soul that know is hungry and thirsty for the fountain of life! HOW MIGHTY IT IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MOST HOLY! To give us such wonderful description of what we are to do and to abide to. All glory to the Father and to our Messiah Jesus of Nazareth.
