I can see you are very well acquainted with audio synthesis and that you have spent quite a bit of time exploring this very complex and somewhat intimidating instrument; also, as compared to other videos i have watched that review this synth, you had the best/most appealing patches and melodies and have demonstrated to me the actual practicality of this synth in regards to making good songs/beats/rhythms; thanks for all you do!

Just got one today, when I got it out of the box I was surprised at just how good looking they are, I’ve watched lots of vids on them, but they look real swish when you get your hands on one! Nice bit of kit, can’t wait to see what it will do.

...OK, been tinkering with this thing over the last week or so. I've just watched this video again for the 2nd time. Not only am I impressed all over again at the presentation of the vid, but I'm stunned at just how well Woochia is explaining the functionality of the Modular (his English is technically very very good). Korg should show this guy some love :D After working out a fair bit on my own through trial and error I've now revisited this vid ,and I can understand so much more. I've happened across some interesting patches, most relying on randomised beeps and boops, very pretty, but have been lacking rhythm. I now understand how you can use this unit to create momentum, and also that having a 2nd modular would enable you to be far far more creative.

This video was worth it just for the func + ratio = global detune! Top notch review and a great intro to modular. I just got one myself and I am really enjoying it. I've already made sounds with this synth that I've never made on non-modular synths. Yes it's small but for me that is a bonus because I like to have a synth with me while travelling. This plus a PO rhythm makes a great portable combo. The only downsides for me so far: short battery life (tho I only tried so far with the bundled ones), I do prefer a filter with separate resonance control, and basically I have to have delay on my synth sounds so I always need another box for adding delay. I would have preferred a built in delay over the reverb, but it does require more memory.

Don't laugh, I used to own a full Roland System 100 modular synth (with 101 & 102 expander) with sequencer and mixer. While the System 100 is very different being a west coast style synth, the sounds I have got out of the Korg Modular in my opinion are just as good. Different yes, but just as good IMO. I used Tony Horgan's excellent book which helped me understand this little guy a bit better, and the book has some killer patches too!

People make fun of Volcas but this one is pretty cool. I have a collection of Bastl stuff that connects with the same breadboard connectors, often called Arduino connectors. I hadn't thought to add a Volca to my tiny synth board due to a large collection of Eurorack stuff, but perhaps it would be fun to have one with the tiny stuff.

Excellent video! Very informative. There was one thing I noticed that was not accurate though. You can in fact play different sequences chained together even when they are not right next to each other. So if you wanted to play sequences 4 and 16 in a chained loop, you would hold "memory" + "4" + "16" and when you hit play it should play the two sequences in a chained loop. You just have to keep the "memory" and the sequence slots desired held down while you add different sequences to the chain. I believe you could use this to swap out the order of your sequences, giving you even more chaining options. For example you could play sequences 4, 16, 8 then 6, and then you could swap them to play 16, 6, 4 then 8. I haven't tested that out yet, but in theory it should work.
@0228christian5 жыл бұрын
@@Woochia definitely! I'll test it out when I get home from work in a few hours and let you know.
@0228christian5 жыл бұрын
@@Woochia I apologize for the delay. My week ended up being busier than expected. I regret to say that I was completely wrong. I don't know why I thought I remembered being able to chain sequences together that were not next to each other, but I was not able to get it to work when I tried it out this weekend. Which also means you cannot do my theorized sequence order rearranging on the fly. Sorry!

Great presentation I really learned allot, but a small mistake: You CAN input audio. I am currently experimenting with using it as a guitar effect. A REVERB for example, is very simple to make. I am currently experimenting trying to turn it into a SLICER like effect, that plays it's internal source AND your guitar, raw AND through the notes of the sequencer with a different pattern. And all these affects either alone or in combination. Next I'll probably experiment with guitar + moving drone. And then combine it with some breadboard components since they have the same wires. But I'm a beginner and would appreciate if someone more knowledgable would make a series of videos on that topic. They would be a hit I think.

This is such a beautiful video!! Super duper cool, I gotta say... It's really convincing me to take a closer look to the synth world. May I ask? While I love Volcas, and have them play next to my Rev 2 - the fact they are cheap does not mean they are not capable of great sound. However, I do not see much of potential in this one in particular. If it is about introduction to the modular, I find it very limited. Possibly better introduction to the modular would be something like MicroBrute, but this will do if you want to grasp basic concept of connecting oscillators, filters and amps and getting your mind to the non-hard wired environment. Having said that, I heard a track you made with modular, and while I think that from sonic perspective you could get the same stuff from Volca Bass or FM, still it is a nice little synth. This one does have smt cool though, and that is wavefolding and FM together - many synths with higher price are having limits in this area. The only Volca i really cant embrace is Kick, all others are actually really good desktop synths.
