I'm lucky enough to have Mark Camphouse as a composition teacher. When I mentioned I was playing first horn on this piece, he told me the story of when he actually got to sit next to Rosa Parks at a performance of this piece. Before the band started playing, he suddenly became intensely nervous. What if she didn't like the piece? What if he would offend her by the piece's dissonance? But he looked at her a few minutes into the piece and tears were streaming down her face. Simply beautiful!

one of the few pieces that utilizes the entire french horn section to maximum capability, especially 3rd and 4th horn. I played 3rd horn for this in high school and the 1st and 2nd chairs lobbied for days because they wanted the 3rd and 4th horn parts.

We played this piece for district band festival my first year in our high school’s wind ensemble-I was a sophomore in the flute section, a younger kid in an ensemble of mostly juniors and seniors, and had the privilege to play the first flute part. I remember the day the horns and euphs worked through the rip with the trill in class (edit: beginning at 7:54) and realizing how special a piece this is and how fortunate and excited i was to perform it on stage. I’m about to turn 22 and even as I sadly move further away from the time in my life where my involvement with band was how I defined myself, this piece speaks me in ways I still can’t fully grasp or put into words. I’m sitting here trying not to cry; in fact I can rarely listen to this piece in its entirety because every time it makes me emotional and makes me wish I could go back in time to not only being able to listen to it, but also feel and savor every beat and every note of it in the ensemble around me. I have to skip it a lot when it comes on my song rotation to avoid becoming a mess lol. Anyway I never thought I would write one of these long-winded, therapy-session, borderline pretentious comments I see on these videos all the time, but I had to get this one off my chest. Current band kids-be thankful for every second you have while you have it. 💕

We played this my senior year in our symphonic band. We won every competition that year with this on the docket. I remember breaking down into tears every time we'd play it as a whole.

I was fortunate enough to play this piece in high school. It was one of the ones that made my band the TMEA 3A Honor Band for 2004 and we got to play our very own concert at TMEA in 2005. I played timpani (woot woot!) and to this day is still one of my favorite songs that I have ever played.

I played this piece in '97 with the Alaska All State Band. We learned it in 3 days and almost sounded as good as this version. Sadly, someone stole the book of CDs I had with this in it. 10:07 is probably the most powerful moment in any piece I've ever played. Fills my heart with nostalgia, but the good kind.

Hey Chris, we played this piece for the majority of two years before we performed it. I was the principle trumpet in this ensemble and we certainly had depth through the whole section. But we worked for it for a long time to get it like that. I still get teary when I listen to this even 12 years later. Thanks for the kind words
