That Jennings looks cool! Would love to hear more about it. It reminds me of the original Reverends from the early 2000’s.

I’ll play it on the channel sometime soon! I’ve frequently considered ordering a custom guitar from Jennings as the guitar that I’ve been waiting on for five years doesn’t seem like it’s ever being delivered on. Long story. This Jennings that I found on marketplace is essentially what I would’ve ordered from them anyway, and I saved a ton of money by buying used. Semi hollow, gold foil McNelly pickups, Bigsby vibrato and a roller bridge. It’s a very clear sounding instrument with a crisp kind of airy tone - unlike anything else I have. And it’s red! Always wanted a red guitar.

Thanks. Id love to hear more about the fretted 5 string steinberger. My guess is that oud players would prefer you play it poorly than worry!

It's this one - thinkns.com/instrument/ns-design-electric-violin/ns-design-electric-violin-nxta/ 5 strings, tuned C G D A E from low to high like a violin with an added low viola C string. I use the NS Design string set, which I believe is just a rebranded Helicore D'Addario set? It has been years but I think that's what the NS Design rep I called on the phone years ago told me. For all my amplified violin stuff, I'm using the HX Stomp XL and some presets I've built with IRs to get the best sound.

It's crazy that you need to know how to play so many instruments. Have you ever been asked to play 5 string bluegrass banjo? Where does that rank with difficulty?

For years I had a 1970's Kay 5-string I found on Craigslist in Harrisburg for $50. I gave it to a friend earlier this year when I got the tenor I showed in this video. He needed it and I knew I wouldn't use it any more. I can fake a clawhammer style well enough to get by but the Scruggs-style thing has me stumped. I'll definitely have to put some hours in when the time comes. I have massive respect for bluegrass banjo players!

Thanks for the overview. It was interesting to learn of all your musical endeavours. Any love for the journeytek pickup? I see you took it out of your Eastman.

I took the Journeyman out sometime last year because really the purpose of that guitar was to be my live instrument for loud situations. The Journeytek sounds great, but was a bit feedback prone. I still have a similar pickup in my Martin, but that's because I never use it in loud situations. I needed the Eastman to be able to perform well next to a drumset or loud amps and the magnetic pickup in the Fishman was able to do that.

Fellow Red-Eye user here. Won’t build a pedalboard without it (using the Twin version for 2 guitars, acoustic and Jazzmaster).

The Red Eye and making my own IRs has made me happier than ever with my amplified tone from acoustic instruments. Such an underrated piece of kit.

@@AlexPriceMusician Yes, IRs for acoustics are also a great tool, as I recently started discovering after adding a Two Notes Opus to my combined acoustic/electric pedalboard. Best of both worlds! As for the Red-Eye, I tried not using it in order to save space, and discovered a major loss of tone and responsiveness/feel, even with my Fender Jazzmaster! That blew my mind. Good preamps are the unsung heroes.

Fascinating tour of your instrument collection, the tools of the trade for being a multi-instrumentalist. Thanks for all the wonderful HX Stomp videos you've made. They've really helped me a lot to understanding and get the best out of mine. Best wishes for a Happy and Successful New Year! 🎉

Theater gigs (on bass) is what was the most formative for me. Tons of reading is what you need to get good at reading, no shortcut for that!

True that - just gotta do it every day! I used Bill Leavitt's sight reading materials in the beginning to get up to speed, also my violin etude books and anything else I could get my hands on. Set the metronome as slowly as you need to and read it top to bottom without stopping.
A Look at my Guitar Collection.
