A Natural History of San Francisco with Greg Gaar

Environmentalist, historian, and photographer Greg Gaar gives a virtual presentation covering the history of San Francisco's natural features including sand dunes, grasslands, trees, lakes, creeks, tidal marshes, and rock formations. Greg also discusses the efforts by government agencies and volunteers to preserve what still remains of the city's natural heritage.

I lived near Mission Dolores for over a decade. I recognized the hands that built it upon my first visit. I soon learned the brutal history behind the building and that the small graveyard is riddled with their remains. It is a sacred place to me, not for the chirstian trappings, but the sadness behind the site. I go there anytime a loved one falls ill or dies. Thank you for this detailed natural history of our city.

Immediately look up Harold Gilliam and realize I have his San Francisco Weather book and now am reading San Francisco Bay on Internet Archive. San Francisco is the Northern terminus of the mighty Santa Cruz Mountains. Wow, the origin of the sands is very interesting. As a confirmed amateur naturalist this presentation is fantastic

Very interesting and informative. I can still picture some of these natural areas across the Bay, at Mission Peak and by Ohlone College. They have some beautiful hiking trails up there, and in the Sunol area.❤
