Totally agree with Tenschert. This book is culturally and aesthetically much more significant than those two Rembrandts the Rijksmuseum recently bought (with help from Dutch taxpayers). But for some reason art from the late medieval period is underrated compared to the so-called 'golden age' of the 17th century.

Rembrandt is more for Everyman though. It is more democratic art. The Limbourg brothers painted for a very small clientele and their work was rarely seen. Rembrandt's work, although often for one patron can be seen by many more people. It is also a very silly exercise to say that one work of art is better than another. All art has different purposes, perspectives and priorities.

I did not say it was better, I said it was more significant. Besides, I was comparing the manuscript specifically with the two Rembrandts the Rijksmuseum acquired, not with Rembrandts work in general. And finally, i.m.o, for who the artists intended their art to enjoy is totally irrelevant.

C’est très passionnant de découvrir ces peintures inachevées. Mais pourquoi donc Monsieur Tenschert ne porte - t - pas des gants afin de protéger ces précieuses pages? Dommage !
