Schmidt essentially coached the All Blacks to a World Cup final from the backseat. He's one hell of a coach and a great choice for Australia. The Wallabies clearly still have some of the best naturally gifted players in the game but have lacked the structure of a serious test outfit, which Schmidt provides. I'm hoping he takes them on to the 2027 World Cup and they put in a decent showing, Rugby in Australia needs a real boost after the last 10 or so years. The question is, will teams work out how to shut down his Australia team like they did his Ireland team? They peaked in 2018 and had a nightmare 2019 when it really mattered.

Schmidt changes his mind about such things like the tides. He was staying in Ireland, then he was going to England because they had the best facilities for his son, then he was back in NZ but never wanted to coach. Then he's with the Blues, then he's with the All Blacks, but never wants to be a head coach again. Then next thing, he's head coach of the Wallabies. If the media is saying he'll leave, the RFU only have to twist his arm a little and he'll stay on.

The problem is far far bigger than the coach. We have way too many players that are taught from schoolboy age that performance isn’t the only factor in selection. I watched 3 sons go through a ‘rugby school’ where the lie that senior rugby was a squad. Over a ten year period I never saw a single lad promoted or dropped for performance. Injury was the only reason anyone played up a grade. This system doesn’t build resilience. It builds arrogance and entitlement. When the heat comes on the playing group gets found out.

After 111years of many different coaches Joseph Schmidt from Auckland New Zealand was selected by Irish Rugby to coach their national team. And Wham! They beat the All Blacks for the 1st time and all other rugby teams who colonized Irish Rugby for years! Now in Australia he will release his rugby communication and excellent coaching skills to steer the Aussies back up the rugby ladder where they used to enjoy. Occasions always happen in twos. So lets wait for Australia Day 2025 when the Wallabies beat the All Blacks to remove the Bledisloe Cup from New Zealand and a rare defeat at Eden Park! A huge double Banger for Oz!!!

It really doesn't matter who the coach is. Rugby in Australia is dying a slow death, as NRL chokes the life out of it. We already know that only private schools and a limited number of rugby clubs produce young talent, and this is mainly in the states of NSW and QLD. AFL will dominate all other states. And now NRL clubs are signing the very best talent and of course these youngsters need to secure their future. As such, the pool of talent reaching the top will decline, results will worsen, support for the game will slump and eventually spiral down to the end. RA is broke and cannot combat this gradual fall.

Coaches are only as good as the players they are given. The current Wallaby squad is really a Tier 2 group. Why? Not one player would make a World 15 team or a even second World 15 team. Not one current Wallaby would be picked in the top 30 world players - by position. The real problem with Australian rugby is the appalling lack of a development, lack of club support and lack of junior & school rugby. Rugby is now a Tier 2 sport in Australia.
@ClutchRugbyXV11 күн бұрын

It is the system that is at fault in Aussie rugby, not Schmidt. School boy rugby is generally crap and you depth is almost non existent. Rugby is a minor sport in Australia , get used to it. The other issue ( and I am familiar with this issue after living in NSW for 5 years ) is that the states all hate each other and co-operation between them is always fraught with back stabbing and deceit . Hopefully things will get better , but don't blame the coach ( except in the case of that sociopath Jones ). Don't be too fearful of the All Blacks though ,as NZ rugby is badly controlled also . The directors are paid more than the players , and they sold their souls to Blackrock ( the worlds richest investment company , commonly called the biggest predator ). Also Rugby is now the 3rd most played sport in colleges , ranking far behind Football and basketball. NZ is surviving on luck and not talent when it comes to international rugby.

What are you waffling about? NZR executives do not get paid more than the players (they get around $500,000, whereas top ABs like BB can earn a million plus annually), nor did they sell anything to Blackrock (it was Silver Lake), nor are they surviving on luck. The sport is still alive and healthy in NZ. Stadium attendance for both SR and NPC increased, TV viewership for SR in NZ rose 12% to 2.1 million viewers, and the number of teenagers playing all increased last year. In fact not only is Women's Rugby one of the fastest growing sports in NZ, but the newly formed U85 Rugby competition is finding success too. Maybe do the teeniest amount of research in the future.

God almighty, that old fuggin easily debunked chestnut. The overwhelming majority and I do mean OVERWHELMING majority of players that have PI heritage that have played for the AB’s, either were born in NZ, or arrived as preschoolers, or primary schoolers, with their emigrating parents. Personally, the increasing amount of PI heritage players in NZ, has been steadily ruining NZ rugby, not improving it. They fill young representative teams, because they mature quicker and by default squeeze out the white NZ players that take longer to grow in to themselves and the harvest of those later developing white players disappears greatly. The end result is the constant downward spiral of the AB’s and NZ rugby in general. PI derived players are becoming the downfall of NZ rugby and by default the AB’s. They aren’t a long term strength, they’re a long term weakness and it’s showing more and more every year.
