Life too short for long KZbin videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this video Dan is taking a stroll down flanger boulevard. He has two favourite pedals in the world: one is his original Boss CE-1 Chorus; the other is his 1977 Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress. But the ol’ girl is getting too precious and delicate to schlep to gigs, meaning he’s had to search for a younger model. Many a pretty pretender has come and gone but nothing has really stood up to his original Mistress in terms of sound or feel.
However, just when he thought it was never going to happen, he stumbled on a pedal that he thinks does the job. He’s already started using it, but just to make sure, we thought we’d put it up against the contenders to date and get a listen.
So why aren’t there more flangers in this video? According to Dan, the Electric Mistress is a very specific thing; quite different from the likes of the Boss BF-2, for example. Yes, there are myriad flangers available from almost every brand, but these are the ones he chose; these are they on which we shall verily chew.
Please enjoy the video…

That Mooer Elec Lady (now E-Lady) is a pernickety little madam! All the controls are really sensitive, and a lot of the possible settings are frankly unusable, but take the time to dial her in right and the results can be amazing. There seems to be general agreement that the “Colour” sweetspot is around 9:30-10:00 but after that all bets are off. Bjorne Riis likes the “Range” turned right down and the “Rate” at around 2:30, and this works pretty well with fuzz and other drive pedals in front and the guitar volume rolled off a tad. But there’s also a satisfying - less Gilmourish, more rocking out - combination that works for me with the “Range” set at about 1:30 and the “Rate” below 10:00. It’s not much use for that “jet swoosh” kind of flanger sound (I still use my old Ibanez CF7 for that) but, like the original Electric Mistress, it retains all the high-end frequencies, and sometimes I have to use an EQ pedal to roll off the top end with amps/drives inclined to produce those ice-pick tones at the top end. All in all, this is a great little pedal - and at a far from boutique price! What’s not to like?

AND with color round 9:00, range at minimum, and rate pretty high (3 to 4, and it's a huge difference) it's a great little rotary speaker sound.

My Ikea strategy when there with others is to get them to list everything they're there for and make a point to point route on the map. Skipping all the windy paths that take you past piles of rubbish you don't need is such a time saver and sanity preserver! Also, thanks for continuing to make Flange cool. Despite the high profile users, it often gets overlooked as the poor relation of modulation effects, maybe because it's a touch harder to dial in.

The Mistress is incredible, a classic sound for sure. My personal favorite flanger sound was the old MXR 126 Flanger/Doubler rack unit set in the invert mode. If anyone could ever capture that sound in a pedal it would sell like hotcakes. That's the sound of Eric Johnson's "High Landrons" which is the best recorded flange I've ever heard.

Watched a couple of your chorus and flanger videos. Then headed into the local guitar shop hoping they'd have Mr. Black's barber pole thru-zero flanger (successor to Tunnelworm that you demonstrated on a prior video) - but no; they don't sell those anymore. So I messed around with the Mistress and the MXR M117 (reissue - not the vintage Dyna Comp, but looks the same and sounds pretty damned close to the original). went with the MXR and am really having fun with it. very clean and powerful low end, easy to dial-up the big, rich round, rolling sound I'm looking for. would have been happy either way ... (but WOULD like to get ahold of an old Tunnelworm). Next pedal: EHX Lester G - probably.

I know the power chord is not ideal, but the TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Flanger nails Gilmour and Summers tones and then some. Then again it has the preamp in it that gains up your tone when it is off, but to me it is an excellent preamp and with G2 you shouldn’t have to worry. Would love to own an original Mistress, for now my go to flangers are the MXR Flanger, TC SCF, Boss BF-2 (because Prince and Robert Smith), Line 6 MM4, and the Grail Flerb on the EHX Cathedral. Happy flanging and great content as always!

Question: you were talking about placing the flanger after the OD - (I lol’d at the Tom Waits impression btw) - how would this change if it’s in the loop? I’ve all my mod pedals thru the loop on a JC120 (ok not your favourite amp in the world, but with the Demon TS Clone and Xotic compressor straight in it’s not too bad at all), you reckon it’s better to put the flanger in the loop or straight in the front?

Everyone keeps griping about Chase Bliss Spectre not being included, but to me, thru-zero flanging is almost like a different effect entirely. It sounds completely different, as the delay time, instead of going nearer and farther from the dry, is actually replicating the dry, and then crossing the delayed signal back and forth across the dry. We’re talking less than a millisecond so latency is undetectable. It def can be cool, but IMO, when comparing to the Mistress has no place.

Great stuff again - I've missed this for a few weeks now, thanks for exam revision. So imagine my delight when TPS breaks out an Ibanez: this could be the greatest episode ever! Setup fail: gutted 😭 Also, after listening to a heap of their stuff in the car today, can I give a mention to Rush's Alex Lifeson, avid user of the flanger, phaser and chorus?

Tim, I recently picked up a used one. It doesn't seem to have the range of sweep shown here and there appears to be a massive bass cut as well. Do you see that with yours?

The Badlands of Minnesota are actually in South Dakota. If you're ever interested in seeing Mt. Rushmore that's where it's located. I've been there myself but it was kind of uninteresting to me. Great video, though! What was wrong with the Jem? I hope that gets fixed soon. I would have liked to see a couple more flangers such as the ADA one (which I have and I think it's great), but awesome show anyway! That Longamp flanger is definitely the closest one to what Dan wants.

That Longamp is a great copy of the EHX Mistress. They also have a version that replicates the old MXR M-117 flanger. Definitely the one out of this lot to do what the Mistress does.

CorbCorbin That’s right, M-117 clone is called “Omegaman”. I’m also near of finishing other two clones of EHX Poly Chorus and A/DA Flanger. But still Roxanne for life! ❤️👍🏻

Wow....just took a peak at Longamp’s stuff. Handmade in Poland by one guy, cloned circuits, all original/classic BBD chips used. There is a Small Stone with depth knob, called Nirvana of course, as well as CE-2 with blend control. Tons of really good looking stuff. Delays, overdrives, distortions, etc. Pricey, but compared to the 30+ year old versions.....not bad.
@longamp

Kevin Harris Around 4 years ago it was cheap as chips. But you know.. sometimes people think cheap stuff isn’t good enough and after being here for quite a while some prices were recommended by the market itself. But I’m always open for reasonable offers in my Reverb shop so you’re always welcome ;)

I loved that bit of Rosanna on the Ibanez , Mick. Recently learned that solo. Fun to play. Have you guys heard the Keeley Dyno-My-Roto? It's a chorus, flanger and roto in one pedal, selectable via 3-way switch. I have one on my board. Sounds good, inexpensive and saves pedal board real estate.

The Longamp clearly wins hands down. Then maybe a TC Vortex with the tone prints you'dd be able to get way closer to the EM then the other 2.

I was always leery of flanger- because of those thin wiry 80s sounds- but then I got on impulse an MXR flanger (black box) and it's amazing!!!! This is especially noticeable when you record it- it has this magical, very rich, warm and random thing where it just makes subtle shifts and warbly accentuations that make clean chords and leads pop with interest and "gooey" fascination. It's a wonderful pedal! The Hartman pedal sounds good, but it seems to try and "fix" flanger by making it very subtle- I;m not really hearing much flanger here- good for people who only want a hint. The Roxanne sounds very good. The 70s mistress sounds very interesting- a lot like the organic and deep sound of my MXR, but maybe more thin and dramatic, where the MXR is thick and warm. Great video guys!
