The Irish people and their culture are literally the most wonderful in the world. I'm a Canadian who nearly bankrupts herself to go to Ireland every year because it is - but is rapidly becoming was - paradise. Open, genuinely good hearted people, the most gorgeous scenery in the world and eons of culture soaked through the place entirely. Save it. At any and all costs. That reprehensible textbook image is the most racist thing I've ever seen.

Dear John & Sarah, Talking means nothing without the force of action behind it. For too long, discussions and debates have circled around the issues that matter most to the Irish people, but words alone don't drive real change. The time has come for those in positions of influence-like yourselves as journalists-to demand accountability, to stop merely reporting the problems, and start pushing for concrete solutions. Every day we see the same narratives repeated, while the underlying issues remain unresolved. You have the platform to challenge not just politicians but the institutions and systems that perpetuate inaction. It’s high time that the focus shifts from what is being said to what is actually being done. The public is no longer satisfied with promises or excuses; they want to see results. We don’t need more conversations, we need a movement that brings tangible, impactful outcomes.

AFTER BEING RULED BY BRITS for 800 YEARS... maybe. LEARNED HELPLESSNESS. CANT BLAME A CORRUPT GOVERNMENT for wiping their feet on our backs when we continually allow them to. I understand the percentage of false accusations of sexual abuse in family law / divorce cases in the US is generally accepted to be about 10 per cent. Most people probably underestimate the amount of false claims in this regard because they’d never consider doing it themselves but up to ten per cent of the population have personality disorders (which distort their perceptions of and representations of reality) and lots more are simply nuts. Honest reporting should include reporting the accepted levels of false / mistaken claims.

As a twelve year old boy in a De La Salle school , myself and the other 53 lads in the class were lined up along the three walls of the classroom by our lay teacher on a Monday morning . The teacher went from one boy to the next asking each to sing a song . If you wouldn’t , didn’t or couldn’t either through embarrassment, fear or a matter of your voice breaking at the time , you were beaten . One or two of his pet hates were beaten into the floor . Then he would coolly move onto the next in line . This psychological torture continued without interruption from head master or any other teachers , from the Monday until the Wednesday of that week . It wasn’t solely the religious who were often sadists , it was the majority of the profession in the late 60s and early 70s.

I remember walking along a harbour walkway with my children about 20 years ago and I saw a woman who ckeaned the school i went to as a teenager. She looked deep in thought and just started talking to me like she had to tell someone. She told me about her son who had killed himself because the abuse he received from a priest. How it deeply affected his life and the ripple effects. How no one believed him or her until it was too late. Whats worse is that the higher ups in the Catholic Church knew well what was happening and just moved these predators around to different parishes and even countries. The church had a huge part to play in a lot of heartache and damaged a generation. I feel that the words child sexual abuse just trips off the tongue and its weight is lost. If simeone did this to my child I would do jail time.

Another problem is that the traditional Irish family (family A) is presented with a lot of negative connotations where the family is stated as being exclusive of all non Irish cultural participation and the children are portrayed as potentially miserable because of this...its full on things they are not allowed to participate in, while Family B, the multicultural family is portrayed as happier being able to participate in anything they like, adventurous, fulfilled etc. The way the families are described is family A full of negative connotations with things they can't participate in and Family by being portrayed full of positive affirmations and happier. This is leading impressionable kids by the nose into belief the multicultural family is the better environment for them to grow up in with the traditional family being miserable and full of things they are not allowed to experience and cuts off options, opinions and forces conformity...and its all bullshit by the way. But when you look at it, the woke society is the society which is increasingly censorious, forces conformity and hates any diversity of opinion or thought which does not tow a party line and hates nuance of any kind. The entire exercise is not only willfully ignorant, its built entirely on gaslighting the impressionable into believing the "diverse" and multicultural world is free and fulfilling when it's actually constricting and delivers on none of its promises.

I agree with John that there’s potential for massive amounts of false claims when these cases can’t be proven. Ireland is renowned for having a lot of false claims for so called injuries from trips, falls, fake car insurance claims. I’ve heard of numerous claims for compensation for flood damage in my locality from people whose property wasn’t damaged at all. @@tomgreene1843 generally in a construction contract the builder will submit a claim and the client representative (engineer / architect) will visit site, see the work being claimed for is done and approve the claim and sign it for payment to the builder. The claim is then sent to the client for query and payment. So it should be very easy to see who made the claim, approved the claim and paid the claim. It was just an 18 stand bike shelter. Ive seen them put in Apartment complexes for about €20k for expensive ones. All the builder has to do is dig out the ground for the concrete pads which support the canopy and put in a concrete slab for the bikes and fix the stands into the concrete. The shelter itself is about €15k to €20k and is pre-formed and just needs to be assembled on site. Its not fabricated by the builders. Only building work is digging out, laying concrete and fixing the shelter to the pads. Have no idea where €335k went...somebody got a brand new Ferarri out of it I think.

Regarding compensation payouts, I do think we need to get our priorities right. How can we fix the past when basic human rights are being denied in the present? Look at the housing crisis and the way in which humans are thrown onto the streets like thrash - many of whom are left to die. Look at the children needing spinal surgery who are not getting treatment in a supposedly modern country. Look at the way in which carers are being treated by the state and the way in which mothers are basically seen as wasters in the home. Look at the gender ideology being pushed on kids and the proposed practices of mutilation upon confused minors. Look at the callous way in which Irish people who build emergency accommodation for themselves and their children are being treated. Look at the way in which free speech is being suppressed. 2024 Ireland seriously needs to look at itself before throwing stones at past generations.

Hilary Clinton and Obama rejoiced killing Gadaffi and look at the mess they left in Libya, slave trading…..then Syria……now Palestinians. Do you not think that the Israelis have contributed to this mayhem and even suggested that the Palestinians should move here. The EU is hugely responsible for sustaining this war agenda - no true peace negotiations, just weapons and money we don’t have.- insane.

I think you have to take that report in the context at what was going on at the time, now it may seem unbelievable in this day and age, but at the time the power given to the church was absolute and its hard to understand for anyone who didn't experience it first hand, but the abuse was absolutely rampent, but even worse was the community and others would look the other way and not speak up or report it, or they would report it and it would be ignored by the gardai, and then there was the times the order themselves would just move a priest on to another parish to harm someone else, and yes a true indicator with abuse is they basically hunt in packs, they will search employment in position of power like police or school and they do form gangs in order to perpetuate abuse, so those two things can be true.

We all feel sorry for losses on both sides, but let's remind ourselves that Israel army has killed 3 hostages before , they later admitted it was a mistake, they also killed 2 more hostages in Shajaiah that mistook them for HAMAS fighters , even though they were shouting in Hebrew , again Israel admitted it was another mistake so my point is we only heard one side of the story about the 6 hostages, we don't know what happened in that cross fires , probably we will never know, I know HAMAS ordered killing of hostages if Israel army is in the vicinity but HAMAS didn't say it killed the 6 hostages.

I go to concerts quite a lot, granted most of the acts I see are in the metal scene and usually getting a ticket isn't too bad but whenever its a big name they tend to sell out instantly so we usually all queue together and whoever gets through the queue buys all the tickets for the group because its not unusual for them to sell out super quick or the website to crash and you lose your spot and the usual issues that come with ticketmaster having a monopoly on ticket sales. Another major issue is the scalpers who just buy up tickets to resell at ridiculous prices that has plagued the website for years which is where I would be okay with some sort of crackdown but if the government is gonna do anything they should break the ticketmaster monopoly but I'm not holding my breath.

People you went to school with ..that wasn’t what it was for me and I’m a lot older .. it was a depiction of what all Irish people are and were .. and it was simply untrue depiction. Eating potatoes and such a backward view .. while not thinking of why the Irish are only potatoes and the great Irish famine that wiped out over half the Irish population.. it’s only 100yrs since the Irish fought and gained sovereignty . It was the 80/90’s you went abroad and asked if you were British and were ashamed to say you were Irish. The unaccepting of change and mixing with people of other religions sounds more Islamic not than Irish .. the home of a thousand welcomes ..and that book put into schools of our children in a day and age that has a lot of children from other cultures sets our children up to feel that shame and be bullied ! Not to mention this is the first year the parents didn’t buy the school books in public schools so they were probably hoping to skip it in and no one would notice. They say the book has been removed but still sitting my child’s locker in school.. I’m so furious I’ve asked to bring it home to me so I can see what else is there and physical remove the pages of lies.. No matter what you say about the Irish they have a compare and contrast to the multicultural family depicted with darker skin and obviously not Irish as being the “cool” family accepting of all and open to all foods 🙄and people of different religious or ethnic backgrounds.. perhaps they should read the Quran since 15-25% are radically believers (as per intelligence surveillance around the world ) and of 1.2 billion equals 300 million.. equal to the population of United States.. that are anti the west and is ok to persecute and murder Jews and Christian’s. The peaceful majority didn’t make a difference in 9/11 it only took 19 of them to kill 3000 American citizens. If you look at history the peaceful majority made no difference..Germany ww2 the majority of Germans were peaceful citizens but how many millions died. The Irish children deserve to be proud of their history & heritage.. after 900yrs of various wars and occupation they fought back and gained Irish sovereignty.. were still poor and struggled for many years until really the Celtic Tiger years. Still Irish citizens leave this country in there droves today because there is no hope of them owing a home either privately or renting or earning a decent wage .. As for it saying Irish people had no relatives outside of Ireland.. I was very well aware of my American relatives that left their home in Ireland going way back and still leaving in my time ., we know have relatives we still stay in touch with many years on. Plus the Irish were known to give more to charities for disasters / famines and charity around the world a lot more pet head of capital than most other nations ever prior to the Celtic Tiger. So f the lies I’m still waiting on that book to be taken back from my daughters locker and not be bright to class each lesson.. there is no indication this book has been physical removed as yet. As for the apology.. someone that says an apology “ for those that MAY have found it offensive “ has no clue what they are apologizing for .. and as for calling people why had a problem as being “ too sensitive “ that’s what all abusers say ! I want a proper apology and one set aside the true and proper history of the Irish people!

This book is a deliberate attack on indigenous irish...the minister for education is at fault and should lose her job... also the authors of the books should have to answer why they could write such a book,....

Re. the textbook caricature, I think McGuirk and Ryan miss the obvious point that Gaelic culture is now celebrated by contemporary progressives. There was once a time when the D4 establishment might have sneered at it and associated it with bigotry, but no more. Now the middle classes vie for places at Irish-language schools. And wrapped up in Sinn Fein’s momentary popularity among the young was an ascendant nationalism, embodied by the likes of Fontaines DC and Kneecap, and the ironic affection for the Wolfe Tones. At the Trinity College Gaza protests, a banner in Irish had pride of place. So it’s wrong to think that the caricature is evidence of Official Ireland’s true opinion - a slipping of the mask. There will be many Irish progressives who are furious to see Gaelic culture associated in that way with bigotry.

I literally know NOBODY who fits into that narrow box as per that ridiculous description of a traditional Irish family in that stupid school book. In fact, I don't even think I knew anyone back in the seventies (when I started secondary school) like that either. It's pure fantasy from people who have never walked around an Irish town or village. My mother used to make great bacon and cabbage and spuds btw and we might have had it once a week, but she made excellent spagetti and meatballs too. We also had curry frequently. Shepherd's pie was another favourite. She often prepared homemade burgers and chips too, which were better than any takeaway food. That stupid book is an insult to generations of Irish mammies.

The book is wrong on so many levels. This country has been “multicultural” for 800 years. That “multiculturalism” is still problematic in Northern Ireland. On the other hand it is what has produced modern Ireland by a process of acculturation. Padraig Pearse’s father was an English immigrant to Ireland who came in the second last wave of English immigrants to Ireland. I could give countless other examples. Multiculturalism has always existed but now it has been politicised by the left. I think they do not want that process of acculturation to continue for their own political purposes. Many on the right on the other hand do not seem to realise that it has always gone on.

The anti-Irish textbook content comes from the same fashionable mindset as the report on abuse in schools run by Catholic religious orders. For decades in most places, these were the only schools and their staffs since the 1970s were more lay than religious but the religious dimension gets identified as though it was the cause of the abuse. Do we think that kids in that era did not get clobbered and abused in non-Catholic schools? The department of education comes out squeeky clean and bad old Catholic Ireland gets it in the neck yet again.

All I say is Jimmy salvile .. a lot of his stories going way back involved a number of people coming together to abuse children… we weren’t the only country or church that horrific abuse claims were made .. many stories all of similar nature a different institutions, different locations and different times .. the one thing that’s similar is the abuse that was inflicted and suffered by the survivors. But it also happened all around the word. When word got out they were simply moved to a different location where they wouldn’t be known to prey on more innocent children and victims. No real punishment no justice. The only thing different today is social media where people share their stories.
