I work in the industry. My youngest is autistic. I am learning to cut hair so I can cut my son's hair and make it a nice experience for him. While he tends to be insensitive to sensations when it comes to his head and face, he is very sensitive and gets very upset. I bought electric trimmers and I let him hold them and then then over his hair with the biggest guard so he can build a tolerance to it over time

Wow, that was smooth sailing, you both seem so happy! I feel like Jess has really been maturing a lot during these last few years that I’ve watched your videos! The way she was talking about the mutual decision of putting your dog down despite being sad about it, how she handled that haircut, talking about moving and what she wants to do in the future etc etc, it makes me so happy to see. I have never clicked onto this video before I just thought I would and what a neat mom you are and so good with your daughter. She doesn't seem autistic to me at all I watched other videos with autistic children and they are much worse most of them can't communicate at all. Way to go Jess! I have a grandson who also was terrified of getting his haircut. His mama watched lots of KZbin videos on "how to cut hair", ordered a special cutting kit for kids with sensory issues and just gave him his first haircut in years with no crying! She did great! It is not an easy thing to do! If we think ability it they way some individuals do it’s scary as all heck! It’s a stranger with sharp tools next to hour head, touching you(ahhh), parts of you are falling off and when they hit your skin the hair feels like needles in your skin! So, no it’s not easy but it’s doable! Jess did amazingly well!! I am a hairstylist that specializes in autistic individuals and I can tell you it’s tough!! 😊😍💙❤️

You did a great job! I’m so glad you found out what Jess was afraid of with haircuts! Great idea to bribe her with snacks! My mom used to cut my hair when I was little. With the pandemic I had her cut my hair again and also my daughter’s! My daughter has naturally curly hair! It is easier to cut you can’t tell if you’ve messed up. It takes less time to cut hers than it does my strait hair!

She has done well! You are so great with her! I’ve been cutting my own hair for years. I pull it up into a ponytail on top of my head making sure it’s smooth then just cut across the ponytail. Then after just part it down the middle in the back bring it forward and trim off ends about an inch to 2 inches. Works great. All layered.

Sometime we have to use bribes, so our children will do something that needs to be done. We have to find out the “currency“ that is needed to get the job done. If we think about it, there are a lot of people that hate their jobs but they get bribed with a paycheck! Ha ha ha ha! One thing I found that helps with anxiety around getting hair cuts is the word "CUT" being used. We changed our wording with my two children to hair "trim" or getting our hair done. This seems to help relieve the feeling of not getting hurt 💜☺️

i can agree haircuts are scary. my mom is blind so she cant cut my hair, and i dont trust myself, so i go to a salon. my hairdresser knows im autistic and is really sweet but its still scary. bright lights, loud music, lots of smells, loud blow driers. but in the end its a relief when i get a trim

This was awesome ! I had to stop bringing my dog to the groomer bc his favorite groomer suffered a stroke and he wouldn’t let anybody else touch him. I now do his hair myself and it looks just as good. He no longer has to go through that stress either.. bc he really hated it. I love Jess crunchin and enjoying the cheesies while you cut her hair and her new cut looks awesome!

Val, I know you got a plan and it worked!! (congrats BTW) I also trust and believe that you've tried everything LOL, I just have to offer a couple suggestions I thought of through this: Could Jess put her hands behind her ears to protect them (or try some sort of ear cover like one of those foam caps that prevent shampoo from getting in your eyes) just to help put her mind at ease.... Another thought was what if you put her hair in one or two ponytails and cut it that way (in the ponytail)?! I've done it via a youtube video actually and it worked great for me! It gave me layers (they explain the angles) and I have stick straight thick hair like Hannah! Anyway, I know you arent asking for advice and I know the internet always thinks they have a better way, but these ideas popped up and I thought I had to share. 💞💇🏼‍♀️💇🏼‍♀️💞 p.s. Would Jess be interested in fostering rescue dogs? Or would she have a hard time saying goodbye? That might be an amazing experience if its something she is interested in.
