A quick extra video about something that arrived in the post.
MiniDisc & Cassettes available from eox.no/shop/
Cassettes also available in the US from www.the8bitguy.com/product-cat...
IMPORTANT NOTE (for people who care about these things) These MiniDiscs are BURNED rather than Pressed. The facilities for pressing pre-recorded MiniDiscs no longer exist. Therefore these MiniDiscs are recorded on standard recordable blanks in real-time. This makes no difference to the listener experience - but it’s been pointed out that while it was implied, I didn’t specifically mention it in this unscripted off the cuff improvised quickly assembled extra video ...so I’m mentioning it here...in the video description text box that no one has read since 1978

I worked as a sound engineer on a cruise ship just a few years ago. MiniDiscs were still the gold standard for travelling performers. It was an easy way to guarantee the format would work as not every ship in the fleet was using computer playback, and the format wasn't as fragile as a CD being handled by hundreds of people over the years. It's definitely a great format and still has a purpose today! I bet those same ships and performers are still using it.

OK, you guys! Just WOW! Thank you for the support! I've been away up north these last few days and got home tonight... to over 160+ orders in my webshop!!! I'm all out of the the MiniDisc and Retro Grooves Vol. 1 already, and just have to re-order more asap! Who would think that MiniDisc was this popular in 2019? ^_^ I've spent the better part of two hours sorting and printing orders, labels and making what I can of packing all 160+ orders. Unfortunately I have to wait until my postage stamp machine gets access to the values I've purchased (it's an old and ridiculously rigid system which takes a few days to apply.. business people designing it :P). I'm gonna need a few days to manage packing and stamping every order, but they will go out by this weekend. I've also sent a re-order to BandCDs and will most likely also order - if not all, so at least a few of my other albums on MiniDisc too, as it seems to be such a high demand for the format. Hopefully they can deliver it asap. All the backorders will be full-filled, just hang tight. :) Again thank you very much! :D

As a comedy club sound engineer in the early 2000s I used to use MD exclusively for cues and intro tracks... It was far more reliable than cd at the time and much more precise to cue. Also you can quickly edit tracks on the fly and create loops. Plus you can name the tracks which helped when you're trying to quickly find a cue for a live performance... The comedians made sure you knew about it if you messed the cue up! I think it's a great format...!

I really wish the MiniDisc would make a comeback. Such an amazing and underrated format that never got the recognition it deserved! It made listening to music really fun. The only bad thing about it was that it was insanely expensive :/

It's never really gone if you never forget about it. I bet there will always be people like us who will keep tinkering with the format. It will always be fascinating to someone. What I don't understand is when people say things like "the failed format" or "the commercial flop" and there about. This thing was made for like 25 years, and they are still making the media. Blank media for beta video tapes was being made until just recently. I kinda think failure seems to be in the eye of the beholder these days. Like when they pull a TV show I love because it only has 63,000,000 viewers... lol. If they didn't hear about it, or they didn't own it, it had to be a failure. Just something interesting to think about.

Insanely expensive?!? No it wasn't. I got my first MD gear back around 1996ish and I paid around CHF500 (about US$300 at the time) for a combo of a MD deck and portable player from Sony. By then it was only a bit more expensive than quality tape gear. (And the discs cost the same as a quality tape did, but are far more durable.)
@RobR386
@RobR386 2 жыл бұрын
As a child of the 90s, yes it was expensive from my point of view, cassettes suited my recording needs right up until recordable CDs became a thing, so MD for me was a non starter until now where I've picked up a couple of Sony NetMD recorders, got them working and a few discs, mostly to explore what I missed back in the day, it's a very good format.

They did okay in some markets and poorly in others like the USA. In Australia, they were in popular demand for a while until the advent of the Apple iPods, mp3's etc. in the early 2000's. What kept it from gaining more popularity was the 'checking in and out process' of digital music recordings and the poor support by Sony of their own SonicStage software. Ironically as Sony were infecting user's PCs with their notorious rootkit embedded in the pre-recorded CDs, they were marketing CD and DVD burners and discs for the purpose of of making your own recordings. Did Sony's various divisions ever talk to each other and did they ever understand what DRM (Digital Rights Management) was about? In the early 1990's in Japan you could purchase a CD and would be offered by the store employee a blank cassette tape of the approximate time length of the CD recording so that you could make your own copy. I don't know if that practice continued after Japan became a signatory to the Berne Convention.
@GODAXEN
@GODAXEN 5 жыл бұрын
It was SONY fault, they never had a clear route/plan for it plus it's adversion to license it to 3rd parties at first. Also MD data arrived late and it was incompatible at disc level not a logical level making it irrelevant and too expensive, Hi-MD also was to late and poorly marketed and somewhat limited. The DRM implementation and software available didn't help as most of the time made the things difficult. SONY made a grave mistake making it to not support HD audio in later iterations. Actually I think that if MD suported HD audio and it was well implemented it had the possibility to have much more spread today than SACD, DVD-A or BD-A.

MiniDisc has the same frequency range like a CD 20Hz - 20kHz. So no difference there. When it comes to the quality there is a difference between the actual quality and the quality that you hear. The actual quality is not better then the one from the CD since Minidisc is still using a lossy compression format. So there is a certain amount of quality loss. But when it comes to the listening experience some people like the sound of the Minidisc better since it enhances different frequencies to compensate the loss from the compression and this results in a fuller richer sound. When it comes to Hi-MD it's a different story since it is possible to record in lossless PCM quality and as far as i know the quality is exactly the same as the one from the CD.

Yes, there's the Black Keys, the White Stripes, the Northern Mississippi All Stars, the Marcus King Band, the Tedeschi Trucks Band & many other good bands. And I'm 70 years old, a trippy hippie from the '70s! You have to listen to noncommercial alternative, college & community radio stations to hear the good stuff. I listen to KRCL, Salt Lake City; KUNM, Albuquerque; KTDT, Tucson; WWSP, our local college station in Stevens Point, Wisconsin; WSUM, Madison; KDSU, Fargo, ND; CJUM aka UMFM, Univ. of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada & even Rock FM 95.2 in Moscow, Russia! The Russians are a bit less alternative & more 'classic rock' but still have a good variety. They ain't heard of Little Feat, the Hellecasters or possibly Phish, unfortunately for them, tho I bet cooler Russians have. They love American, Canadian & British rock, tho & throw on some old King Crimson or some newer alternative stuff now & then.

Thank you so much for this segment! I am still using a late 90s mini disc player that I used to transfer LP albums onto that were relatively rare. I also have my mix recordings from the 90s and 2000s. It is so funny when people see it now and have never heard of it. And it still functions perfectly. I'm always amazed at how rich the sound quality seems. This may be because you could set the recording level manually. It is a Sony mds-je520

Techmoan! You're costing me a small fortune! It's my first pre-recorded minidisc purchase too. I now have over 100 minidiscs even though I rarely listen to them (1990s was not a good decade for pop) and as you said streaming is more convenient nowadays. What facinates me is the design of the minidisc brands and models, meaning the minidiscs themselves, not the players. I occasionally go to eBay and look for sealed minidiscs that I don't yet have. I might even start a tech KZbin channel including sealed minidisc 'unboxing', and burning discs using my Windows XP laptop. So you're costing me time and money! The upside is that your videos are my favourite form of entertainment currently.

Outstanding as always! A couple of questions. I was wondering if these were like the pre-recorded ones from Columbia, where the sliding door only exposed one side and if it was a one sided disc? Or are these redesigned blank minidiscs? Also, because of your many years of tinkering, would you know of a reason my MZ-1 only plays pre-recorded minidiscs, but won't play tracks that were previously recorded on blank minidiscs?
@ColinBowen
@ColinBowen 5 жыл бұрын
Regarding your player only playing pre-recorded discs, I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but I was watching a video where someone was fixing a CD player that wouldn't play CDs. He said that the laser degrades over time as was not powerful enough to read the disk. If I remember correctly, there was a potentiometer screw near the laser that controlled the power of the laser. He turned the screw to increase the power to the laser and that solved the problem. He said, though, that if you turn it up too much it would blow the laser. I have no idea whether minidisc players have a potentiometer for the laser. Pre-recorded discs were pressed, and recordable are burned. Perhaps your laser is not powerful enough to read the burned ones but it's ok to read pressed ones. I hate to suggest what might be obvious, but have you cleaned the laser? Remember, lasers can blind you, so make sure the unit has no battery inserted and is not connected to the power before doing any servicing.
@tookitogo
@tookitogo 5 жыл бұрын
The album is a recordable MD which has been printed with inkjet lacquer. As for your MZ-1: The reflected (optical) signal from a recordable MD is much weaker than from a pressed MD. Most likely, the laser has degraded and is not outputting enough light. But as Colin said, it's so easy to blow up the laser by adjusting it too high. (I'm sure you can find the service manual for it if you really want. But it's probably not trivial to adjust.) With an MZ-1, which is comparatively rare, I'd probably retire it to being a museum piece, and use a different MD player for actual use.
