I really liked the campfire scene, both the part with the dog and without. The writing drives home how the world has turned upside down. The line 'Everyone is losing their humanity and I don't know why I should hold on to mine' is a wonderful line that I hope becomes a reoccurring theme/idea. 'Who keeps their humanity and why when the world turns upside-down' sort of thing. Either way, looking forward to this new series!

Early into an actual apocalypse, guns would be hard to obtain and impractical, as they make a lot of noise and you would need to top up on ammo every so often. So it's better to use melee weapons and try and fight in open areas, at least until you find a suppresor and a large stockpile of ammo.
