A New Radio to HACK!

Nice video, OpenRTX dev here, if you set the squelch by holding the left side button of the radio and pressing the arrows, you will actually see a working waterfall. When the squelch is opened the waterfall latches on the current frequency and stops scanning, that’s why it was not functioning in your demo. Thanks for testing it out and showing this radio and our firmware to the community!

Thanks for the video. I did the Quansheng Egzumer firmware update just to see the spectrum analyzer on the tiny screen. But I’m a sucker for the bigger color screen. Might have to get one of these. Hoping the cheaper radios will be getting Bluetooth for the ability to link to smart phones for Vara, Winlink, APRS wirelessly

Take a look at the Vero VR-N76/Radioddity GA-5WB/Btech UVPro radios (they are all the same), this is another example of where ham radio should have been... about 20 years ago.

Complete agree. You don’t need to obtain a master’s degree diploma to be good at something. All it takes is the desire to learn, the will to put the time, and the practice! Where I grew up, you didn’t need a motorcycle license. As long as you had a regular driving license! Of course, many moons back, I moved and now I needed a certificate that certified that I know how to ride!!! Is there a place that requires a bicycle license?! I hope not. I agree that for you to be allowed to do some things, you need a special training and to be certified so everyone else knows that you know. BUT, a HAM that has been certified that knows how to work with this stuff, is not allowed to “Ride a Bicycle” … if you follow my riff!! And yeah, I a got my GMRS license also so I can make people feel safe when I ride! 73 …oh, and I love your videos. I will support this channel

Thanks Krispin! 100% agree - knowledge is knowledge. I might even argue that if you learn "on the road" you know more than a classroom - you're more well rounded as you've hit obstacles and overcome them, which is a skill they don't give you the classroom with guided/created problems.

That Talkpod A36 is amazing . I got the GMRS one for my girlfriend . it tested clean . Then I saw Haden's video They fixed it !! She uses it as a GMRS radio and loves the lime green color . now I have to buy another one . I may get clear this time. That K1 cable works with Baofengs as well. It is better then that right angle one. I hope they work on more AM transmit. You will get more range on 2 M/70 CM with that AM mode. I can say the aircraft RX is nice on A36. I will get my own A36 to HACK ! I can say the owner's manual is the worst i ever seen ! The Queen of GMRS agrees ! 73

Just out of curiousity, since we are talking about rx on handhelds, do you think you might do a video sometime on making long wire antennas with the bnc/banana plug adapter for picking up hf? I haven't earnestly sat down and dedicated a ton of time to it but anytime I do go out looking for them, I never find them lol. In theory it sounded like a fun idea but it's proving a little tougher in practice.

For RX only the length of wire isn't as important, just plug one in as long as you can and listen away. Since the RX range on the handheld is all VHF and above, 6-10ft would be the max I would worry about. Elecraft really popularized the banana plug antenna with their internal tuners. Plug in any length wire to each side, hit the tune button and get on the air!

I believe that part of the point of M17 is using an open source voice codec (so ambe not required).

It requires a codec, but not a licensed one. Its CODEC2

@@temporarilyoffline But codec2 is all software, not some separate chip you need to buy. A36 Plus MAX is right at the edge if the microcontroller in it is beefy enough to do it.

@@temporarilyoffline The A36+ MAX still doesn't have enough "oomph" or free pins. But I did talk to the guys at Talkpod and they did two things: 1) sent me a prototype with a beefier MCU, such that they can mass-produce a modified version with M17 if that one succeeds in running it; 2) told me that they may or may not 👀👀 be working on a new M17-capable radio. We'll see by the end of spring 2025. Stay well!

@temporarilyoffline I mean from one radio to the next. Some manufacturers seem to produce radios in such a way that some of them are within FCC requirements and the next batch transmits primarily on the third harmonic.

@@haxwithaxe I agree - I meant if I get a 10 pack... or I get 5 from amazon, 2 from aliexpress, 3 from ebay... I have know way of knowing other than testing my own radio after I get it if it will be good. "good" is subjective to me and I have the tools to make a bad radio good, so I'm "ok" with any radio that comes in. Or if I get 9 good radios of model A and 1 from the same company... that 1 could be bad and the other 9 are good. Its just an "is" now brother.

Where did you get your Quansheng UV-K6? It's been hard to find an actual K6 with no hints of it secretly being a K5(8).

Hi, the Baofeng radio UV25 in the EU version is locked for transmissions on PMR446 channels. I believe the EU version likely doesn’t allow transmission. Is there a solution to switch to a different version (export mode)?

Unfortunately no, the chip has a "hole" between 640-830MHz, where it can't rx/tx. It'll let you type it in, but RX is zero. Some accounts say 630-850, some say 650-830, who knows... but that general range.

@caravansecuritykemp7486 : Well, it's a monitor/screen issue. Viewing the KZbin video on the desktop, it's green. On my tablet, it's yellow. Verified this with my grandson looking at it and he "sees" the same colors. Strange stuff, but OK, I guess...
