Beauty is often seen as ethereal and something magical and undefined, but in this video I break down 7 ways that light can be used to more clearly define an image to be more appealing.

KZbin is full of so many individual tutorials about achieving ‘cinematic’ art - taking advantage of the buzzword instead of explaining the why behind it… “Use shallow depth of feild because its *cinematic*” “Use fog because it looks *cinematic*” “Use a soft key light because its *cinematic*” I have no doubt that, as a lot of us are self-taught, we may have gained a good intuition for these things but at the end of the day don’t know why it works. This is easily one of the single greatest videos on the internet explaining the why behind each standard practice and its just brilliant. Its just what we needed. Thank you!!

What I gleaned from this: aesthetic beauty is an orchestration of caricatured aspects of reality.

Beautifully put! ;) Seriously, with "caricatured" in that sentence, it makes for great food for thought...because it oscillates between over-hanced and essen-ciated. Neologisms for caricature as well. Thx!

I loved this. I'm a painter and all (good) painters - especially those who paint in a realistic way - use all these tricks. Every example you gave from movies could have been given using examples from pictures painted by the great masters of the past. Wanna see great lighting tricks? Caravaggio and Rembrandt are good examples. But ALL great painters knew every trick in the book: shape, depth, contrast, palette, composition and so on. And of course the same happens in photography, illustration and all figurative arts.

Interesting examples and I agree that this is the form of beauty in images that are supposed to be looked at for any time from a few seconds to half a minute or so, also to give room to contemplation inside the movie and not overwhelm visually. But I would also like a video about how all of these points change if you want to create images that are looked at for longer periods of time. Many of these movie shots really become quite boring and obvious when you look at them for a few minutes, and they are not really something you want to come back to.

Definitely earnt my subscription with this. Very high quality material and it makes me wonder what else is on this channel. As an aside, it's interesting how much overlap there is between this and the fundamentals of art if you study painting and/or drawing. The concept of art fundamentals is roughly the same, which is objective metrics and standards we can refine our work through, so that they reach a higher level of general beauty and appeal.

This is great, I've been hoping you would make a video on constructing beauty! I'd love to see how some videos on how to create beauty in imagined scenes without a reference. These rules are great, but I suspect that application of these rules alone does not universally lead to beauty. These seem like necessary but not sufficient conditions. My current interest is related to 2D game art, so personally it would be interesting to see some stuff about "flat" beauty without 3D effects or emulation thereof. Even completely flat graphic design can be beautiful sometimes and I have no idea how the art witches do their magic.

I do a fair amount of flat art myself, and I've always thought beauty, or at least pleasing-ness, had everything to do with composition - line, color, shape, contrast, and harmony. But listening to this video sure makes me wonder what I'm missing, and I'd like to know, too!
