That’s the Greenhouse 1951 George shot. Beautiful color. It has the amazing resolution of a 35 mm reel capture.

We don't know the range but it look a much higher yield than 200ish kt.

@@stewiemac4017 The early mushroom head size was greatly enhanced by the low (203’/62m) tower cabin required for neutron time of flight versus energy experiments, including GANEX (GAmma Neutron EXperiment) on the ground near the tower. The fireball brought a lot of ground materials into the fireball, because it touched the ground. Remember that the much smaller yield Smoky test in Nevada over-performed on a 690’ (210 m) tower, and the fireball tore into the ground, that caused a fallout disaster. At the end of the sequence the mushroom bell was beginning to develop in the air rarification of the powerful updraft of humid ocean air. The George yield estimates were around 225 kilotons.

Beautiful. It's not the right word because there isn't a word for how I wanna describe this. Thank you! thank you! Literally never seen these and it's an added bonus from seeing 'Oppenheimer' with my old man Sunday.

I mostly find the videos here fascinating, and never expected one to give a sense of "dread". It wasn't even the fact that it took up the camera's entire field-of-view (out to horizon!), but the amount of time that passed before being reminded "don't forget about the fireball"! Maybe the relative silence added to the effect, idk. Like a sky that entrances you before a BIG storm, then starts funneling a "little too close"!

I grew up during the 60s & 70s. Sometime between the end of the Cold War and now, we seem to have lost our fear of nuclear weapons. I'm hoping that people, after seeing these videos, will relearn that fear.

One thing back then, the majority of those who had nukes loved their children enough never to start a nuclear war. It takes more than one person in the US anyway to put in motion the launching of those types of weapons.

Congrats on 200k! I never want nukes used on people even again, but man I am jealous of the people who got to witness these tests. They are so fascinating and beautiful. To watch something that is miles away from you grow to cover your field of view and eventually tower over you to the point that it feels like you are standing right below it. Imagine if it wasn't a bomb, imagine if a tree grew like this. After a few minutes you would be standing under the branches looking up at the bottom of the treetop that is now miles over your head.

This is probably the first video I have seen that does not have music or the sound of the explosion synched with the fireball. Makes it much more realistic.

Grandfather said he worked as businessman who traveled around the world; selling brand new vacuums in his late 20s and married my beautiful grandmother. At his death in bed with 5 children of his own; he confessed everything and directed us to find boxes in basement; we all learned he was working for Department of Atomic energy at height of Cold War. He made so much money by watching nuclear weapons and make reports to Washington DC about explosions. He was able to send all 5 kids of his own (my mother too) to college and kept a big house too. His last letter from the office in D.C. was; ‘We need make it go bigger… Have the Air Force work on an aircraft that can carry it.’ For last 40 years of his life; he spend as a physician professor at university in Canton, NY. Keeping all the secrets to himself. Students would make fun of him for being too smart, but never experienced what his grey eyes have seen in the Pacific Ocean from 1948 to 1961. Love you Edward ‘Papa’ We forgive you for lying to us for being a vacuum business man, but you were direct engineer of nuclear weapons observation, you were just doing what you would serve for this country.
