A look behind the scenes to see what a call night is like for me as a GI fellow! I take you through the pages and calls that I receive and how I responded. Stay tuned to see whether I get called in for any emergencies!

You can tell this guy is really a doctor because of how much information he can pour out his mouth non stop. I look away from the video for a couple seconds and I've missed 4 symptoms and a couple treatment plans! 🤯

I only recently noticed that when the new 1st years came in, how much slower they talk. Made me notice how even in regular conversations everyone in my year hurries through information like their consultant is about to hit them with a book for being too slow.

My mom was a rn at a rural hospital If we were breathing and our blood was clotting we didn't go to the ER, we made an appointment and went to the Dr All our Drs worked in the clinic during the day and one would be on call while working and then if you went to the ER during the day it threw his clinic appointments off AND if you go at night your going to be waking him up after he worked all day It was so weird living in a city where the Drs were working scheduled shifts at the ER so we didn't have to wait for them to drive to the hospital and they weren't moody due to sleep deprivation I'm back in that hometown and the other day I laid awake in bed in excruitiating pain cause I didnt want to be the reason multiple people were woken up and had to go in, so I waited till a decent hour to have one of my roommates drive me to the ER

💯 Agreed! But, he understands that everything needs an order unless your unit has a few standing orders! He is very kind, even through all of his funny videos, they are appropriate funny versus making awful remarks about a patient. (Even if he could get away with it, to make us laugh, he doesn't treat anyone badly!) Doc Schmidt is a very special doc!

This is FASCINATING. I had many preconceived ideas about what being on call was like, but it's so cool to see an example, especially by someone this good at explaining. It's wild that you can get a call and within minutes be 'on' and giving advice. And in addition, you follow that up with a vlog for the viewers before getting back to sleep. I love that you've got a nocturnal buddy as well! Thanks for this window into the support system we all take for granted will catch us in an emergency.

Both of my parents have needed GI consults in the last few months, and I’m so thankful for the care they received. Sadly, my mom had metistatic cancer in her liver, and she took the lactolose as long as she could. She passed away last month. Then my dad had signs of internal bleeding, but it wasn’t found in his GI tract. He has since stabilized, and we hope his anemia will resolve. Doctors don’t always get the thanks and respect they deserve. Your care makes all the difference for the patient and the family.

Then, as we ask pribing questions, we find out they really don't have those sxs! But, they do have...and pull up a video. I can't laugh. I smile and finish my questions and apologize to the ling doc as we get ready to move them out of triage!! ❤❤❤❤❤

Your video helps put into proper perspective how dedicated doctor's are to their jobs. I can say with full confidence that our local University hospital saved her life and is continuing to so. I have to spill. I’m a chiropractor, I work for a hospital. I inturned in a hospital… twice… at the same time. It might be a grass is greener take, but I’m so damn jealous of what you get to do. I deal with back pain which operates in a grey area most of the time. It’s mostly clinical diagnosis and the occasional MRI to show disc herniations etc. We actually learned every system and how to care for it in school, the blood work and all. Since I don’t see those things, I have lost much of that knowledge. When I see these videos it really reminds me of how much I love diagnostics and the body. I always want to go back to med school, but the debt…. Lastly I’m never on call so I have, what I assume is, a good work life balance. Though I love medicine, my wife probably wouldn’t like me going back to learn more of it…. Keep these videos up man, you make me want to go back and learn more.

In hospital I worked before, GI Fellow on call would be called only if there is a need for urgent endoscopy (say unstable GI Bleed). Whenever we call them, it's usually quite a mess already, therefore they will stay overnight at hospital with us fellow residents. And also since the duty is quite heavy, they split duty with GI Surgery team. For pancreatitis/ SBP/ acute liver failure, it's all on the on-call residents, very exicting on site call everytime!
