"A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" is a British romantic popular song written in 1939 and published in 1940, with lyrics by Eric Maschwitz and music by Manning Sherwin.
I had previously recorded and uploaded a MIDI-backed version of this song last year, having spent a long time creating my own MIDI keyboard arrangement based on the sheet music, only for it to sound like a cheesy karaoke version. I still love the song, so I decided to rework it with a simple, single acoustic guitar accompaniment, but still using my existing drum and MIDI bass track (to emulate an upright string bass) to give it some swing.
And of course, I had to let the sanctuary kitties take part in the video. I'm sure they'd love to encounter a nightingale.
Berkeley Square is a large leafy square in Mayfair, a part of London. The Ritz Hotel referred to is just outside Mayfair, adjacent to Green Park. The nightingale is a migrant songbird that favors rural habitats and is unlikely to be heard in Central London.
