What can you see and do in 1 day boating on the Norfolk Broads? This new mini-documentary takes us on a tour from Wroxham - and we take a look at the amazing variety of boats on the water too!
From the narration:
We decided to celebrate summer on the Broads in Norfolk with a day-long boat hire from Wroxham.
In this film I’ll show you how far we got and what we saw.
We hired our boat from Broads Tours next to the hump-back road bridge.
We had a small diesel-powered boat with space for 8 people.
These boats are easy to operate even if there are only 2 of you!
Larger Day Cruisers are also available.
We were on our way very quickly, with 8 hours to explore.
This gave us plenty of time to travel both upstream and downstream.
We travelled upsteam towards Coltishall and downstream to Horning on the River Bure. We also travelled up the River Ant to Ludham Bridge
You’re likely to see a huge variety of boats as you travel around the Broads in Norfolk.
Small Day Boats, diesel or electric, can be hired for just a couple of hours but there’s no toilet.
Larger Day Cruisers have cooking facilities and a loo - useful if you can’t find a mooring!
Larger cruisers are perfect for a family holiday on the Broads.
Boats with forward steering tend to be on one level and are generally low enough to pass through all of the bridges on the broads.
Other boats have a raised central steering position which is great for visibility.
But the higher the boat, the less likely it is to fit under all of the bridges, for example, the hump-back bridge at Wroxham.
Dual steering cruisers have both inside and outside steering positions, the latter usually reached by a set of steps to the upper deck.
And cruisers with an aft cockpit have a canopy which you can lower in good weather.
Most modern cruisers have fibreglass hulls but various types of wooden boats are still plentiful on the Broads, from motor cruisers to sailing boats.
The Norfolk wherry is a type of sailing boat used on The Broads.
In the past they carried small perishable cargoes and passengers.
They feature a distinctive gaff rig with a single, high-peaked sail and the mast stepped well forward.
Other types include this small canal narrowboat and small Edwardian-style launches.
Some of these launches are privately owned but the Liana is used by the Broads Authority for tours carrying up to 12 people along the upper reaches of the River Bure between Wroxham and Coltishall.
There are also a number of larger passenger boats offering regular trips downstream on the Broads along with refreshments and commentary.
At the other end of the scale, small open boats and kayaks are popular ways for smaller groups to explore the waterways along with canoes.
We saw a lot of groups of people canoeing on our day out.
There are plenty of places on the Broads offering canoe hire, including Wroxham, which was the base for our day out.
Stand Up Paddleboarding is also becoming popular - but be prepared to get wet!
Other folks head out in small boats to go fishing and a number of Broads Authority launches patrol the waterways making sure that people navigate properly and obey the speed limits.

One word; knots!

Hi, if you're referring to the speed limits, the official signs on the Norfolk Broads (at least in the areas I have travelled) are in mph. On the other hand, our knot tying ability is not the best ...

Very professional footage, editing and brilliant narration voice. I have been to The Broads many times summer and winter as both a keen angler and general locality explorer, there is no where I would rather be.

This is a highly informative and technically well produced video. In fact it's not a video. It's a documentary programme. Professional quality.

Great video, beautifully filmed and edited! I may take some inspiration from this for next year's holiday video - I usually do my spoken links on-camera, but I think I might try adding some narration during the edit next time. Keep them coming! :)

A day boat is just not enough to see this beautiful place. We hire a 12 person cruiser for a week. My favourite place

You're right. it takes a long time to get anywhere because you can't travel fast. But that's one of the attractions - slow, leisurely travel. I used to live near the Broads for years, so I was lucky to visit and see different stretches both from on the water and from the land. And a few miles of Broads on the map seem a lot bigger when you're in a boat travelling at maybe 4 mph. On the other hand, if you only have a day, or you can't afford to have a boat for a week, a Day Boat is a great way to see at least a bit of the Broads.

@@DeannaAllison I agree. The family boats for a week are very expensive. I've been going to Norfolk from up north for 25 years and for the past 10 years the broads. I've seen some amazing sights that really are like no other. Suppose to be going this August all paid and everything but not looking likely to happen this time around 😢

@@alexgawthrop1748 Well, I hope you will get to go back soon. I was lucky to have lived in such a beautiful area of England for so many years and I understand why so many people want to visit.

I normally hire boats there, I think that bridge is a big hazard as u sometime can’t see other boats coming round the corner till the last second, this has happened many times before but it was still fun. Great vid
