I'm Jewish and I'd like to thank you for this video. This conversation is so so hard, since nuance seems to be rare these days. Most people around me (both right and left wing) don't seem to understand that two things can be true at once: what is happening in Palestine is a war crime, but this situation also enabled a lot of people to show their antisemitism. You're the first creator that I saw approaching this topic with respect and responsibility. Made me feel safer and more hopeful, even if it's just for a while. So, thank you.

Man, I came to America in 2004, New York. Yeah... Not a pleasant time to be a Muslim in America. I was terrified. I'm a Muslim from Eastern Europe, I'm a part of an ethnic minority group, but by American standards, I'm white. There was police by the Mousqe 24/7 and Muslim boys of all ages would get stopped and frisked all the time for a long time.
@ElyakinsКүн бұрын
Sorry, I just wanted to come back and clarify a bit. Some people do not know how things work in other countries. I'm white by American standards because I have white skin and blue eyes. But in my home country, I am a part of an ethnic group that is 30% of all population. My birth certificate has my ethnic group written on it instead of it saying I'm a XX-ian. And the religion my family follows is not the main religion of the state. Just wanted to add this because in some countries, it doesn't really matter if you're "white" in a majority white country. Not trying to say anything by this, thought maybe some people might find this interesting. Learning about slavery definitely enlightened me about America. Thanks to my dual experience between my home country and the US, I definitely can attest that white privilege in America is very real 🤣

Something that really made me pause was seeing how he would react to white/non-muslim creators saying the exact same thing as Muslim creators in such an extreme way. For example, Sam Seder said on his show that any consideration of Hasan Piker as supporting terrorism/anti-semitism was slander & inappropriate. Ethan then got a screenshot of Sam saying the same thing in his members’ chat- and reposted it on the infamous instagram stories with “this is definitely a low ranking staff member who stole Sam’s log in, I really doubt Sam believes that.” Or Emma then explaining her viewpoint on the backlash of Hasan & interviewing the teenage Yemeni kid and various other anti-Palestine talking points- being even more direct than Hasan had been- and Ethan shared that the only reason that Emma defended or agreed with Hasan is because “she just doesn’t know that he is a rape apologist & defender” in regards to his statements on October 7 (that is, that sexual abuse likely did happen as it is common in these scenarios and is inexcusable, but the mass systemic rape was atrocity propaganda based on the blocks the state placed on investigations, and even if it was mass systemic rape that doesn’t justify genocide, hardly radical.) Frogan says the same thing as any white creator on the left, it’s an attack on a monstrous figure, but when the white person says it he is instantly approaching it in good faith. I also had an extremely difficult time with his whole “integretation is impossible because Palestinians are radicalised to kill all Jews there” as it’s just colonial propaganda that it is indistinguishable from those who supported past apartheids or even american slavery (Thomas Jeffersons’ famous ‘slavery is a horrific act of violence but they cannot be released and must be allowed because the black slaves will kill all white people if we allowed integration’)

Okay so im watching on 2x speed so forgive me if im missing something, but around 30-35 minutes I do have a *slight* disagreement here: I think that Ethan is wrong with a lotttt of things. That said, I do think a lot of people online are dismissing the idea that 1. Jewish people are facing an extremely overwhelming amount of antisemitism right now and 2. “Zionist” is, in many cases, being used as a slur. I have personally heard people I know in real life say antisemitic things in the past year, including one instance of a coworker saying she didn’t like Jews because they are all pro Israel. I obviously pushed back on this since I know Jewish people in real life who are *not* pro Israel, but the statement was said nonetheless. In another instance, I had a friend who I share a social circle with say that he didn’t like a particular girl from our high school because her “only personality trait was being jewish”. Again, I pushed back on this: what exactly is wrong with being interested in your religion and culture? I have also seen numerous antisemitic comments online that conflate Judaism with Zionism in a negative way: there was an advertisement I saw on tiktok for the Holocaust museum, that was a video of a woman describing her experiences in a concentration camp. The comments were flooded with political comments saying that the woman herself was somehow genocidal and a zionist, despite the content of the video having nothing to do with Israel at all. I think those types of comments are what people mean when they say that “zionist” is being utilized as a slur. It is specifically being used as a slur in the context of jewish people talking about their history when the people in question are actually NOT Zionists. Ethan, however, is not (in my opinion) helping fight this use of the word by constantly claiming that 90% of jews are zionists. Pointing out statistics such as that one are not going to help debunk the myth that judaism=zionism. And in FACT, prior to 2023, I was very aware of the conflict in Israel/Palestine and a major point that was emphasized within those movements was that “judaism does not equate to zionism”. It seems that both sides of the coin: antisemites as well as zionists, have reverted away from this rhetoric because it benefits them. Sorry for the incredibly long comment, I just think all of this is a conversation worth having.

@namjoonie936 there's a trend where cis white men who are marginalized in some single other way (being gay for the people I'm using in the comparison, in Ethan's case being Jewish) will treat the oppression they face as uniquely more important or oppressive than forms they don't face. Ethan treating antisemitism as uniquely and singularly acceptable in society when that's objectively not true is reminiscent to me of the cis white men who treat homophobia as uniquely and singularly important and rampant in society while ignoring that transphobia is so openly accepted, for example. They're not wrong to address that they face oppression, but they have major blind spots to the many forms they don't and will never face.

27:59 Just a "correction" Sam Seder isn't a secret third option between Hasan and Ethan, he shares the same views as Hasan. He even clarified that on TMR and told people to stop diverging from what actually matter. That's why Hasan suggested Ethan should talk privately with Sam. Because if he didn't want to hear from him maybe it would help to talk to someone with a similar background that he said previously he respected. Wich only made Ethan accused that suggestion of anti******
@MikasRhetoric3 күн бұрын
Oh it wasn’t saying that the views are different or anything! I just like Sam’s personality and the fact that he’s so chill. I only said that because the feud was between Ethan and Hasan, and that Ethan always talked about sides. So it was a joke that my side is Same Seder.

I just finished the video, and I think you covered everything pretty much spot on. Some things I would like to add to the topics discussed and my feelings as well: a lot of people missed the nuance on the end of Frenemies as well. If you rewatch a lot of the frenemies content back then, you will see that the way he acts with Hasan now, was the way he was treating Trisha when they fell apart, and is now trying to erase all of that because she is on the come up. He was very nasty and dismissive of her and her experiences the moment they stopped being friends, and basically harassed her and encouraged harassment from her hate subreddit at the time Trishyland in the same way he does with Hasan now in Destiny's subreddit. Thats why she never talks about him.Eventually either it'll get to that point with Hasan or it will just get worse. ( I encourage everyone to revisit this era and come to their own conclusions). I also agree with the homophobia/coercion thing. He forced Rebecca Black to watch the prolapse video without her consent, and coerced a lolcow they had at the time C-Man to expose himself on twitter so they can see the size of his you know, thing. When C-Man pushed back and said he felt pressured, he was the one that was attacked. Which leads me to how Ethan loves to weaponize his audience when its convenient for him but condemns when others do it/do it to him. Most recent example was with Adam McIntyre and how quick he was to accuse him of taking advantage of his mom. The reason I stopped watching them was because of bottom/Will Smith gate. I hated their attitudes with the audience for trying to educate them, and whenever they "apologize" its a whole lot of nothing and felt disingenuous to me. With Will Smith gate, I didn't appreciate how they were talking over their black fan caller and dismissing her. I think around them same time, Ethan was obsessed with the Channel 5 and Andrew Callaghan era (which side note I noticed he has a history of platforming the worst people ever), and they wanted to do a Channel 5 style interview during the Free Britney movement, which was about liberation of a woman's autonomy. The fact that he sent the crew there to get content and lolcows during a very serious protest bugged me. All of these things combined led me to stop watching and its a shame to see it hasn't gotten any better. I feel disgusted having been a fan of them for as long as I did (not long but long enough) and defended them. Granted I didn't know them back in their vape nation days so I had no idea how he truly was and acted and all the horrible things he said. But I'm glad more people are started to talk about it and I hope you receive more kindness than anything because I know this one is about to go crazy. As always, awesome video!

A chador is mainly Persian it’s… superficially the closest looking to a habit and it looks like an eastern euro grandma holding her shawl (I know these are kinda reductive but we need references we know). A hijab is simply a headscarf that may or may not form to face but it’s usually it’s own garment that is independently able to mix and match with various styles of clothing.

I was honestly a huge h3h3 defender post Frenemies. Even right after the end of Leftovers, I could see where Ethan was coming from, because I had a lot of similar issues I needed to unpack myself. I was raised in a Zionist Jewish house household. I went to a summer camp named after Theodore Herzl for 8 years, all of my family did. But Ethan very clearly cannot or does not want to acknowledge the very real, very one sided genocide being carried out by Israel and the IDF. I’m embarrassed that it took me until his comments around Aaron Bushnell to unsubscribe. I cannot believe everything he has done since then in the name of ‘combating anti-semitism.’ I can’t imagine being Frogan, Denims, or any of the actual random twitter people Ethan has lashed out against in his never ending instagram stories.
@jjenzes3 күн бұрын
I truly don't understand the criticism that he hasn't acknowledged a genocide because he has talked about it, he's sympathized with the Palestinian's struggle, he's condemned Israel's actions and been openly critical of the government for years before and after Oct 7th. I haven't seen every episode but that was always my takeaway. Not trying to fight or anything im just genuinely curious because this criticism of him has always confused me.

He has spread a lot of misinformation and hasbara. He thinks “from the river to the sea” is a g-nocidal statement. He thinks freeing Palestine or having a one-state solution is problematic because 8 million Jews will have to move away or it’s going to cause a Jewish g-nocide. He called the Nakba the “Israeli war of independence” I could keep going but my comment keeps getting deleted :/ but that’s just some of the things people have a problem with. He can say he is pro Palestine, but his words and actions are that of a liberal z!o.
@jjenzes2 күн бұрын
@dreamie9868 Thank you for the response, it does seem to me that a lot of these reasons misconstrue his actual position. I remember him talking about palestine quite extensively when leftovers was still a thing. He was not fighting with those creators because they are pro-palestine, there were many reasons but it was never because of their support of palestine. Where I live, there has been a very scary rise in antisemitism as well as islamaphobia with physical attacks on innocent ppl so I don't view it as perceived antisemitism, I see it as an interconnected issue. His position was that many israelis view the phrase in a negative light, which he felt would hinder attempts at peace if the movement centered around that phrase and I believe he called it the war of independence because that is the term used by israel, not because he supports the actions. I appreciate you taking the time to respond, I am pro-palestinian myself, and I have plenty to criticize about his coverage of the situation. I do think his perspective on history is skewed towards the israeli side. He often mispeaks or is quick to jump to extremes, and he could do more to center muslim voices. But the widespread criticism of him does not appear to be based in reality. From my perspective, ethan has always supported peace, criticized israel, and wants there to be some kind of solution and autonomy for palestinians. He has advocated for peace and donated to palestinian relief efforts. In my view, these are not the words and actions of someone opposed to the free palestine movement.
@dreamie98682 күн бұрын
@ I will agree that he misspeaks and jumps to extremes. I think he does harbour a level of islamaphobia as well. He may be pro Palestine, but the daily lying/slandering/clip chimping (with the help of Destiny and friends) of the biggest pro-Palestine streamer is a reason many people have a problem with him. He does this with smaller creator as well, such as Denims, Matt Lieb, the crew of TMJ, etc. who are positive and educational voices, but are being labelled as “radical” and “terrorist sympathizers.” He is staunchly against humanizing or doing any analysis on why resistance forces come to be and participates in pink washing. He has gone after prominent pro-Palestine media figures such as Mehdi Hasan and Bassem Yousef, calling them liars and spreading false history… he hasn’t uplifted any Palestinian voices. The only person he has brought onto the podcast after Hasan to speak about Palestine was Lonerbox, who is a liberal Zionist and a g-nocide denier. Ethan’s retelling of how Israel came to be was very problematic, saying Jews around the world had to flee the ME to Israel because they were just antisemitic (Balfour declaration who? 1 million project what?) and his denial of Israel’s cultural appropriation is also problematic. Sorry if my response is all over the place, I don’t have time to reorganize it.

Thank you for talking about this! I'm also a fallen fan. I should have dipped sooner the show was really starting to suck and get boring, but the last straw for me was the episode he had Kendall Rae on as a guest. I thought it was ridiculous that he would call people antisemitic for saying Free Palestine but then have on a guest (Kendall) that spreads antisemitic conspiracy theories and said "the Nazis were low key woke". When I pointed that out in the chat (nicely) I was banned from chatting as a member of over a year. When I left a comment about it on the subreddit, I got permanently banned from that too. They banned a shit ton of people that day and deleted all posts from fans about Kendall. They also banned Native American fans who were offended by Kendall and Ethan using white sage to cleanse the studio, which of course Ethan acted disrespectful about. After that the show went REALLY downhill, the button incident happened not long after. I'm an antizionist Jew. My grandpa was a survivor of the holocaust. Never again means never again for anyone. I'm tired of Ethan speaking for all Jews. I think a lot of Jewish people were already paranoid because of rising antisemitism around the world, myself included. When October 7th happened I think some zionist Jews allowed it to make them more paranoid of others, and people like Ethan started getting angry, when they should actually be angry at Israel for tying themselves so closely into Judaism and then committing horrible genocidal actions in our name. I wish Jews like Ethan would realize Judaism existed for thousands of years before zionism was INVENTED (by an atheist man of Jewish decent who convinced people that the land of Palestine was promised to Jews by a god he doesn't believe in) and that the existence of Israel is antisemitic in itself. I hope more of his crew leave soon, it's a ticking time bomb.
