I wonder if the retreat was used as a diplomatic exit from political church disputes as much as r and r. These guys were not made bishops for being nice or holy. The corporate world of the wealthy parts of the church, the contemporary one per cent, would rival any modern boardroom fights, and mysterious deaths were not entirely unheard of. They also could raise armies if needed.
